What to do with 1B?

Assuming that you don’t enjoy seeing Reed trot out there every night at 1B when we are supposed to be competitive, what should the Met’s do to solve this issue?

There are some obvious directions the Mets could go.

1) Go with what we have and put Tatis at 1B, Sheff in LF and Church in RF.  Murphy either stays to be the primary sub or goes back to AAA to learn ANY position.

2) Sign a scrub that did not get picked up like Richie Sexson.  I don’t know if he has been working out or not.

3) Trade for a lower level or cheap 1B option like Nick Johnson, Aubrey Huff or Chad Tracy.

4) Trade for an upper level 1B like Victor Martinez.

5) Solve LF and let Tatis play 1B full-time.

What do you guys think?

At this point I think our best option is #3, quickly. We can’t have a guy that can’t hit and has no clue at the position. Jeremy Reed makes NO sense for 1B. I can understand Tatis, Murphy, Sheff but Reed?

I think 3 would be the best option. Reed is terrible option at 1b. What I am really surprised by is that no one is discussing Minaya realizing just how wrong he was not going after a LF or 1B. Minaya glanced over players such as Dunn and Abreu, and I am wondering if this is a mistake or if it means the Mets are saving that payroll for a midseason acquisition or saving 1b for a free agent in the coming offseason. Since the options are fairly limited I am not sure Minaya knows what he is doing.

PS WTF is wrong with Metsblog. Do we think Cerrone finally figured out the comments section needs to change?

You know that I wanted Abreu badly, there was NO reason for us not to get him. Cheap and on a 1 year deal? Hell there were even playerd clamoring for it. Think if we had listened to the players we would have Abreu and Pudge on cheap contracts. That lineup would look a hell of a lot better than Ramon not the pitcher Martinez batting 6th.

For a guy who sits behind a plate for 3 hours, you would think Castro would be more comfortable with it. The more he plays, the worse he looks back there. I really cannot wait to be rid of Delgado, Schneider, Castro, and Wagner, (Castillo too but we have to wait another year or two). Not to mention Schoe and Duaners salaries are fully off the books (around $2M)

Thats 12+5+3+2+12 (rounding of course). $32M and possibly another $5M if Putz is not retained. I am not sure there are going to be that many worthwhile FA to spend that money on.

I think Church will be gone too freeing up another 3 million. Also Schnieder makes 5 million believe it or not.

I really want to see F-Mart up with the team to see what he has. If he fails and he does not look ready, Minaya may be looking for two OF and a 1B come next season. I think we need to see what we have to know going into the offseason, what we will need to be looking for. Banking on prospects with questionable track records(or without positions to play) is extremely risky as we are learning now.

P.S. I included Schneider after Delgado’s $12M salary. But yeah, I agree on Church and possibly a large amount of turnover.

I thought you were including Putz with that 5 sorry.
I would like to see Fmart too this year but not yet. I want him to at least get fulltime AB’s in AAA until the break.

Why not play FMart in RF or LF since we have two OF spots in flux, putting Murphy at 1B. That way we do not need to see Reed or Tatis playing everyday, where they are clearly getting exposed. Come June 1, he should just be up.

I think at this point Tatis has to play everyday. I don’t think bringing up a most likely overmatched Fmart RIGHT NOW will help much. I think for now the best option is Church in RF, Sheff in LF and Tatis at 1B. Murphy can back up Sheff and Tatis or be sent to AAA to learn how to catch a ball.

Thanks, just starting to play around with it and I don’t even really now what I am doing, LOL.
