First up Johnny Maine. John gave the Mets 6 innings with only one earned run. Just what the doctor ordered. There was alot of talk early this season about the Mets needing another starter, mostly because of the outings of John Maine. However, he has quietly put together a nice season and has really gotten better as the calendar turns. Opponents are only hitting .233 off Maine and has given the Mets 6 innings all but one time over this month. Maine single handedly is quieting the critics and giving the Mets a shot to win every time out.
Second up Mr. Gary Sheffield. Now Omar caught alot of heat for this move but its almost safe to say..where would the Mets be without Mr. Shef. One of the under rated signings that Omar has done but probably will not get his due credit. On behalf of TRDMB..kudos. I was very critical of Mr. Sheffield early on but i have to admit he has won me over. He has earned his right to be there between the tag champs to protect against the pitch around. Very good job Mr. Shef and thanks Detroit for picking up the tab(14mil). I can only imagine if Mr. Shef gets hot when the big dog Carlos Delgado comes back….it is technically possible for BOTH of them to be in the lineup…pretty scary
Last up is yet another couple of signings that Omar does not get enough credit for. With all the injuries the Mets have endured over this season..it has been the pitching that has had no room for error, and these guys have answered the call. Just as scripted, JJ comes into the fight with the fire blazing and promptly extinguishes it. Now JJ wasn’t as sharp with a clean inning but he battled back to shut the door and did not allow a run to pass. Enter Krod in the ninth for his occasional adventure but eventually finds the light at the end of the tunnel and emerges with his 13th straight save. These two are a welcomed treat for us Met fans who lived through 29 blown saves just a season ago. Its nice to know we have guys down in the pen that have the extra gear we were missing last year. Good job Omar.
