Game Thread: Mets (24-20) vs Nationals (13-31)

Game Time: 7:10pm

Game Time: 7:10pm

Record: 3-1 Era: 4.93 K: 25 BB: 11 WHIP: 1.47

Record: 3-1 Era: 4.93 K: 25 BB: 11 WHIP: 1.47

Mets Notes:

  • Sheffield looks to continue his hot hitting and Livan Hernandez tries for his sixth straight win over his former club as the Mets go for their fourth win in five games Tuesday night against the Washington Nationals.
  • The Mets could need continued success from Sheffield with Reyes and Beltran potentially headed to the disabled list. Reyes has missed eight of 11 games with the nagging calf strain, and Beltran will have an MRI on his sore right knee Tuesday.
  • New York’s injury-plagued lineup could be relieved of some of the pressure if the Mets can get another strong outing from Hernandez who still has the most wins for the Nationals (24) since the franchise relocated to Washington from Montreal before the 2005 season.
  • Hernandez lost his first game against the Nationals in 2006 after spending three-plus seasons with the club, but since then he’s posted a 3.34 ERA while winning five straight starts against them.
  • Hernandez held the Los Angeles Dodgers to one run in seven innings Wednesday, but the Mets still fell 2-1.
Record: 0-0 Era: 5.68 K: 3 BB: 1 WHIP: 0.79

Record: 0-0 Era: 5.68 K: 3 BB: 1 WHIP: 0.79

Nationals Notes:

  • The Nationals will hand the ball to Craig Stammen, who left his major league debut Thursday to a standing ovation. The right-hander retired the first 12 batters he faced before struggling his third time through the Pittsburgh lineup. He was pulled after giving up four runs in 6 1-3 innings, failing to get a decision in Washington’s 5-4 victory over Pittsburgh.
  • Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman has reached base safely by a hit or a walk in 43 consecutive games, topping the single-season franchise record set by Tim Raines in 1986 and pulling within three of Rusty Staub’s overall franchise record. Zimmerman is 5 for 16 (.313) with two homers and two doubles lifetime against Hernandez.

    LETS GO METS GO!!!

  4. metsfan4decades

As he grounds out to Castillo – just have to say – who would have thought that Castillo would be only 1 of 2 regular starting position players still standing? — as I cross my fingers….

    What dreams are made of.

    1. metsfan4decades

OMG. So much worse when you see it in print.

Pitching, pitching, pitching. That’s the only way we’re treading water for the next 10 days or so.

      1. saltygary

If the pitching can keep them in the game for the next 10 games, they might be alright.

  7. metsfan4decades

What must it be like, as a young man, making your ML debut? Especially one as highly touted? hyped? as FMart as been. I can’t even imagine. A dream come true, I guess.
Here’s to him living up to all we’ve been hearing for years.

    Good luck, kid.

    1. dentulous

yes years, but he is only 20. that is ridiculously young.Hope he pans out too.

  8. metsfan4decades

O.K. – congrats to Adam Dunn. Could have been against another team though…

  9. trs86

Livan, you could try getting people out this inning. Maybe his idea is to clog up the bases with slow people.

    1. trs86

Yup, I was right. Come on Livan.

  10. metsfan4decades

Nice 4-6-3 double play. Just one more, Livan.

  11. metsfan4decades

Reading some of the comments on amazing avenue tonight. Now I know where some of the posters of metsblog have gone. Some of them -wow. They have no idea what they’re talking about. The usual comments of this is all Omar’s fault for no ML ready players in the minors for all these positions, FMart is going to save the season, Livan stinks, blah de blah blah…..

    1. trs86

LOL, any one seen Wanny, Fong or Rusty?

      1. metsfan4decades

        No, not on amazing avenue.

        1. trs86

I have not seen them since Gestapo Day.

          1. metsfan4decades

            hahahaha – good one.

    2. dentulous

well, as long as they dont come here.

      1. trs86

Yeah I just went over there. Hardly intelligent conversation.

  12. metsfan4decades

Oh no. Do not want to see hide nor hair of the trainer on the field for any met player for the next month.

Foul a ball off yourself, get a double. But ouch, looks like he’s still in pain with that running.

  13. metsfan4decades

So Valdez is in the dugout, available, wearing #4.

  14. metsfan4decades

YES !! Ramon. Might have to start calling him RMart to distinguish between our two Martinezes….

  15. metsfan4decades

Livan – lifetime .231 hitter. That is higher than half our subs here lately – lol.

  16. saltygary

In the ESPN gamecast photo of Johnson, he is totally sporting a dip in his front lip.

  17. metsfan4decades

Ollie’s line thru 3 innings pitched today:

    3 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 4 BB, 4 K, 66 pitches, 35 strikes, 31 balls.

He walked in the only run he gave up. Typical….

    1. trs86

Nice #5 pitcher numbers, LOL. I guess that’s all we need him to be right now.

    2. dentulous

      pretty darn pathetic.

Man if this guy was able to pitch at his potential, our rotation would be so solid. 3 years of crap pitching, tying up 12 mil a year.

      1. trs86

Eh, you know that for parts of those 3 seasons he will pitch incredible. We just have to have replacements when he is Hyde Ollie.

        1. dentulous

lol, it would be nice if there was a way to know when hyde would show up and we could just replace him.

The only thing is, what if we no longer get good ollie? I know it is too soon to tell, but he has had a lot of time off, and that is his line in a minor league game… pretty sad

        2. metsfan4decades

LOL. – and I actually would take that right about now from Ollie.

  18. trs86

Fmart with his first RBI, LOL.

  19. trs86

Livan just plain knows how to pitch. He may not have a lot left, but he knows how to pitch as well as anyone on the staff not named Johan. He always seems to get the out right when he needs it.

    1. metsfan4decades

Agreed. He’s actually pitching better than advertised. Looking solid.

    2. kingman26

Absolutely agreed….a fine move by Omar, and Livan keeps us in almost every game eats innings.

  20. metsfan4decades

Oh, can you believe it? Nice, magic there Santos.

  21. kingman26

I would never wish anything bad on a Met (well, with the possible exception of a few members of the ’93 team maybe) but I do really hope Brian Schneider stays the hell away from this team. Boy, is he not needed or what?

    1. dentulous

pls, i dread him coming back. thank God he is gone next season…

    2. metsfan4decades

But you know they’re not gonna eat his salary. It’s a dilemma, that’s for sure. What they really need to do is move Castro, see if anyone needs a catcher and we can do a trade with him. Couldn’t move him in the off season, but with injuries now and such, maybe some team is desperate for catching. I think his salary makes it easier to trade him.

      1. kingman26

Yeah, but maybe what we have going right now is finally the right situation for Castro—he starts about half the time (in other words, not enough for his chubby out-of-shape body to give out) so he stays healthy, is rested enough to hit, and is still around for pinch hitting and late-game double switches when Omir starts….maybe, just maybe, if Schneider comes back and plays for a couple of weeks and stays healthy, maybe we could eat part of his dough and move him instead??

        1. metsfan4decades

You’re right. I think the only way we’re trading Schneider is to pay some of his salary.

  22. metsfan4decades

And wow, final line for Ollie that SNY just gave…..he didn’t improve in the last inning and a third. He wound up pitching 4.1 innings, 5 BB, 88 pitches.
    Sigh….

    1. dentulous

how long is he gonna be in the minors? i hope the answer is until he improves a lot

      1. metsfan4decades

Truthfully, I don’t know that works. I know you can’t leave him in the minors forever/indefinitely….

  23. dentulous

F-Marts first hit by pitch. knowing our injury propensity, he will be out in a week…

    1. metsfan4decades

      Ha! Do not jinx us.
Actually, knowing FMart’s injury history, you never know…

  24. kingman26

Well, Ramon Martines may have been rusty and/or tired when he first came up, because he sure looks like a pretty good defensive SS now….

    1. metsfan4decades

I know – can’t believe the difference over the past couple of games. Wonder why?

      1. kingman26

I looked it up, and he really has not played much SS in the majors or minors in years….maybe that, being tired, and nervousness all conspired against him those first few games??

        1. metsfan4decades

Well, if it was nerves or some such thing and he is a decent defensive MI, then more better for us. His bat still sux though – lol.

  25. metsfan4decades

For those that don’t get SNY, Kevin B. is doing a thing on uniform changes over the years. He actually has a sample of each and is describing them all. He’s up to the 90′s now – the Mike Piazza version – lol.

  26. dentulous

Good Lord, Livan is amazing out there. 6 innings, 71 pitches. Hell he can go straight to K-Rod. Shame he did not get the win he deserved in LA

    1. metsfan4decades

I know. Can you imagine how good our rotation would be right about now if Ollie had his head on straight?

One of the things that impresses me about Livan is his professionalism. Unlike some of our younger pitchers who show visible frustration on the mound when things aren’t going their way, Livan is so smooth. Goes out there, does his job, no dramatics and most of the time gets it done that night.

      1. kingman26

Just like El Duque….I think that with the lives most Cuban defectors had before coming to the US, and the circumstances of their leaving Cuba, a jam in a baseball game here probably doesn’t seem very stressful by comparison!

    2. metsfan4decades

And so far, his only mistake was that pitch to Dunn right there.

    3. kingman26

How about a complete game?! It CAN be done by a Met!!

      1. metsfan4decades

And wouldn’t that be ironic? Livan as the first Met pitcher this season that gets a complete game.
I don’t think Jerry will do it though.

        1. kingman26

Yeah, I think you are definitely right…

  27. metsfan4decades

OMG – Sheff did it again!

Thank God Omar signed him. Don’t know how long it will last, don’t know how long he’ll stay healthy but for right now – just wow.

    1. kingman26

I hesitate to say it, but maybe he is back? Not back to the Shef of 6 or 8 years ago, but maybe back to being a better Shef than the somewhat injured one of last year??

I mean, that was a serious HR right there…

      1. metsfan4decades

We can only hope and keep our fingers crossed.

Hey, look what a healthy Livan is bringing to the table. He said in ST (or was it after his first start), that he feels good, he feels strong this year, his knees aren’t bothering him and he’s going to give it all he can for the team.

  28. kingman26

WOW! Never thought I would see the day when I was a Gary Sheffield fan, but that day is here!

  29. metsfan4decades

Did you see Manny A.’s face with the ump. He was almost laughing out loud. Probably saying:
‘you think my pitcher was throwing at Tatis there? Have you seen MY pitchers this year?’
    LOL.

  30. dentulous

Sheff, This guy is a savior

  31. metsfan4decades

and Livan the first Met pitcher to start the 8th inning.

    1. metsfan4decades

Oops – maybe he shouldn’t have.

      1. dentulous

have faith my friend haha! Nice Livan

  32. metsfan4decades

    Very nicely done, Livan.
    Little, casual fist pump there.

  33. trs86

I can’t say enough how great Livan is for this team. The guy knows how to pitch. If we make the playoffs and he ends up in the pen he will be a HUGE asset.

    1. dentulous

Well, he is doing a lot better than I expected. I mean, better that Redding and Ollie.

      1. trs86

I expected him to do very well, be at least a #4 for us. Ollie? Who knows what the hell to expect.

    2. metsfan4decades

      Couldn’t agree more.

  34. trs86

Gotta let him try for it.

  35. trs86

Of course that being said, why pinch hit for him anyway? Not like there is anyone on the bench hitting better than him.

    1. kingman26

I think HoJo might be the 2nd best hitter left on the bench at this point….

      1. trs86

Giving a lot of credit to Johan?

        1. kingman26

LOL! I was perhaps giving too much credit to Murph!

          1. trs86

You mean his upper leg is not torn?

      2. dentulous

LOL! Man, you guys are too much sometimes.

        1. kingman26

I am just joking around—-I love this team, and regardless of how many injuries we have, if we keep getting starting pitching like everyone but Redding has been giving, and if Ollie comes back and gives us anything, we are going to keep winning….

          1. trs86

Even Redding’s first start was solid.

          2. kingman26

You are correct sir, and if his next one or two are also solid, we are going to be psyched.

I did check though, and after this week and next week, the five weeks leading to the All-Star break are brutal—10 series—2 each with the Yanks and Phils, and St.L., Dodgers, Mil, Cincy, TB, and Bal….we need Redding too!

          3. trs86

By then we need friggin Ollie Jekyl Perez.

          4. kingman26

Yeah, we sure do….Funny that he and Redding will be fighting for the 5th spot at this point! I guess it will be Ollie’s at first though. Livan certainly isn’t leaving the rotation.

          5. trs86

Yeah, I would assume Redding would go to the pen. Don’t THINK Ollie would become long man and LHRP.

  36. dentulous

    man, Nats relief pitching sucks.

  37. trs86

    Tavares quote
Signing with the Nationals was like being at the bar at 4AM and taking whatever you could get. LOL, and that’s from a guy ON the Nats. There you go Grave.

    1. metsfan4decades

      hahahaha!

  38. trs86

Hey move Wright to SS, he’s got too much arm there.

  39. kingman26

    Lincecum against the Braves tonight….

    1. metsfan4decades

      Any score?

      1. metsfan4decades

Never mind. Just realized they probably didn’t start yet.

        1. kingman26

Yeah, I think a 10:15 start….let’s hope Timmy is better against them than he is against us.

    2. dentulous

      excellent!

    3. trs86

Hey King, have you seen Wanny, Fong or Rusty?

      1. kingman26

No, I haven’t….that is why I was checking the other site a lot, to see if I saw them on the comments page. But it was up for such a short time. I just saw oleosmirf and the nafstem guy whining about Omar and Stick Guy making some good points, and then it was closed…but I am going to keep checking, as those may be the top 3 guys I miss who are not here.

        1. trs86

I would not mind Stick either. But especially Wanny and Rusty. Rusty needs to come over and write his This day in Mets history.

          1. kingman26

Yeah, I completely agree…I meant to look for Rusty on MySpace as I know he has a page there, and I have just been so damn busy…will do it later tonight. Wanny I hope will find his way here. I really like Fong. Without question, the most lucid, reasonable, intelligent, true fan who is also pessimistic!

          2. trs86

And we need that to develop more conversation.

          3. kingman26

Totally agreed…I mean, being a boneheaded unreasonable pessimist is one thing, but Fong is an intelligent and reasonable grown-up who has been a fan as long as I have and ALWAYS listened to the other side and I really loved going back and forth with him, even on sidetrack topics too, when things were slow.

  40. metsfan4decades

Livan ‘complete game’ Hernandez ! Who would have thought?
Great game, great pitching and offense with Sheff steps up to the plate.

    Put It In The Books!

    1. metsfan4decades

The 40-40 club. Our 40 year old pitcher and our 40 year old LF.

      1. kingman26

        HAHA!!!

    2. trs86

Incredible, Nats or not to come out and take care of business with this lineup is truly AMAZING>

  41. dentulous

    Yes, Nice work Livan.

  42. metsfan4decades

Livan being interviewed by Kevin B.:

    ‘I like to pitch’.

    The understatement of the night.

    1. dentulous

Haha, Man u gotta love the contribution our older players are giving us.

  43. trs86

46 Friggin complete games in THIS era?

  44. kingman26

So Omar got KRod, JJ, Shef and Livan, picked up Santos off the scrap heap, we have a comical amount of injuries, we are 1/2 game out of first, and folks on other sites are still bashing him….

    1. trs86

Yeah, but payroll, and uh Bell and uh no Man*y.

    2. dentulous

Kingman, if we dont get Pujols, Peavy, Halladay, the team sucks no matter what. Gotta be an all star at every position for some to be happy.

      1. kingman26

        LOL! You said it man!

Omar should be fired for not having Hanley Ramirez on the bench to step in for Reyes, and Jeter, Rollins and maybe Hardy in the minors ready in case Hanley gets hurt!!

    3. metsfan4decades

Absolutely unbelievable. Yeah, he made a couple of bonehead acquisitions or trades but overall? Well, his moves were for the most part looking brilliant right about now….

      1. kingman26

Yep, except the one bad move re-signing that lefty guy who you and I were the only ones in favor of!!

        :-)

        1. metsfan4decades

I know, I know. I might be eating my words on supporting that one….
I really thought he had it in him though.

          1. kingman26

Oh he does have it in him, the question is whether he can summon it out of his soul, and transmit it through his noggin and out to that left arm!

Still, Ollie is 27, and has a LOT of time to get it together….

          2. metsfan4decades

            hahaha!

        2. trs86

Yup, I dodged that one. I wanted 1 year of Garland AND Wolfe for the same price. Of course we would not have had Livan then so I would be out too.

          1. metsfan4decades

I remember you kept advocating getting those two.

But in a round about way, maybe it’s a good thing – the Ollie signing – especially if that’s what allowed Livan to pitch and show what he has so far.

      2. saltygary

For what he had to work with after the MAdoff deal, he did an amazing job. He really had no choice on Ollie. I only wish he got Dunn. That guy was there on the cheap. *pre-injury thoughts* put him in the of this year and he can play 1st next year once Delgado left.
The whole Manny thing was ridiculous.

        1. metsfan4decades

Agreed on Manny. I was never a supporter of signing him.

        2. kingman26

Yeah, I was in favor of Ibanez or Dunn all winter…man, would either of them have been perfect! But, lately, Shef is giving us what we need out of LF….may it please last….

          1. trs86

Funny, we wanted Ibanez but did not get him. No one wanted Dunn. I don’t understand the Dunn part. I would like to know if we got outbid significantly on Ibanez or if he basically chose the Phillies.

          2. kingman26

I don’t know for sure, but I think Ibanez wanted Philly….Omar seemed to want Ibanez, but the Phils signed him so quickly. Maybe the lure of being on the defending champs in that hitter’s park lured him. I would guess he really wants a ring after being on so many rotten teams and getting older.

I was pro-Dunn. 40 HR every year and that OBP make up for a lot of strikeouts and bad fielding. But, as you mentioned about Garland/Wolf meaning no Livan, Dunn would have probably meant no Shef, but Dunn could have been our 1B of the future.

  45. metsfan4decades

Well, Phills almost tried to lose that game. 5-0 going into the 9th and they gave up 3 runs to the Marlins. Fish just couldn’t get the other 2.

    1. trs86

That bullpen, because of their SR is not going to be a strength for them at all.

      1. metsfan4decades

You are correct. Even with the return of their set up guy (name just on the tip of my tongue), the BP will be really overworked. And none so far are showing he year they had in ’08. Especially Lidge. I think going into tonight’s game he had like a 9.50 ERA. Yikes!

        Good for us.

  46. QnsNative718

Great win tonight, guys! Omar is lookin like a genius with picking up Shef and Livan. But ofcourse you’ll never hear about that on the Fan…

    1. trs86

Or even on the ole blog. Can’t generate post that way.

    2. kingman26

Did you see that line drive homer Shef hit?

Could we be looking at the comeback player of the year??

      1. trs86

Very possible. I still don’t think he can keep his average up. However, if you can return him to hitting in between Beltran and Wright he is going to see some pitches and hit a lot of HR.

        1. kingman26

Agreed….if he stays fresh and healthy, when he is between those two seeing fastballs, he should hit. And .250 with some 2B and HR would be fine with me…especially with that OBP where it is (now .430!!) And I am not sure if I have seen him swing at a bad pitch!

      2. metsfan4decades

If he does win that distinction, wouldn’t that be two years in a row for the same team? (Tatis?)
Just makes some of Omar’s instincts smarter and smarter…..

Funny, I also thought Tatis won, but I looked and Lidge won…maybe Fernando finished 2nd??

I’m not sure. For some reason, I thought Tatis won NL comeback player of the year. Can’t remember where I heard or saw that though. Guess I was wrong or wherever I got that from, they were wrong.

Yeah, I thought EXACTLY the same thing, but when I Googled it, every place said that Lidge won….

OK, wow, now Wikipedia has Cliff Lee and Lidge on one page, and Lee and Tatis on another!! Every other place I saw had Lidge….VERY weird, as I clearly remember Tatis being called this last fall…

Showing an interview on the post game with Ollie.
Says his knee is a little sore but getting better – hummm, really?
And said overall he’s feeling a little sore – it was cold, which didn’t make it better.

Bobby O said the delivery he was show casing tonight was the Ollie of old. Said he needs to do that consistently now and better locate his pitches and he’ll be good to go.

With Ollie, that’s far easier said than done…….

O.K., interviewing FMart now. And he’s got his right arm wrapped like they do pitchers. What is that all about? Was that arm maybe his last injury and it’s a precaution and/or part of the treatment?

Never mind. Apparently, it was the elbow when he got hit by the pitch. Said it’s O.K.
I don’t know why I thought it was his hip.
