The Don's Record: 6-2 Era: 1.50Â Â K: 75 BB: 14 WHIP: 1.05

Mets Notes(hat tip to yahoo and adam rubin):

  • Santana looks to win a third consecutive start Wednesday night and help the Mets complete a three-game sweep of the hapless Washington Nationals.
  • The Mets have provided Santana  with 12 runs of support to help him win his last two starts. That’s one more run than they managed in his first seven outings of the season, when he went 4-2 with a 0.78 ERA.
  • The two-time Cy Young Award winner overcame three errors Friday, allowing three runs – two earned – and seven hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings of a 5-3 win at Boston.
  • Lately, the Mets have been better defensively, winning three of their last four games without a miscue to match their longest streak of the season.
  • New York has won 10 of the last 13 meetings with the Nationals, including five of six at home. However, the club hasn’t swept them in a three-game series since April 15-17, 2008.
  • Since joining the Mets in a five-player trade from Minnesota prior to the start of the 2008 season, Santana has won all four of his starts against the Nationals with a 2.33 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 27 innings. He beat them again on April 24, yielding one run and six hits while fanning 10 in six innings of a 4-3 victory at Citi Field
  • Jerry Manuel said Omir Santos was in the original starting lineup, but was pulled because of a bruised shin, which he suffered Tuesday.
  • Also, Manuel said he intends to do a platoon at first base, despite using Fernando Tatis on Tuesday against righthander Craig Stammen. The manager said he thought slumping Daniel Murphy needed a break. Tatis should return to first base on Friday, after an off-day, with the Marlins scheduled to throw a southpaw in the series opener.
  • Manuel said infielder Wilson Valdez, acquired from Cleveland, should get his first Mets start Saturday in a day game, although he’s unsure whether it will come in place of Ramon Martinez or Luis Castillo.
  • Alex Cora expects to have a three-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo this weekend, before being activated early next week, he tells the Daily News. Cora hopes to play a game apiece at second base, DH and shortstop. Meanwhile, Jose Reyes and Ryan Church should be headed to the Mets’ complex in Florida soon.

Nationals Notes(hat tip yahoo and federal baseball):
  • The Nationals own the worst record in baseball, are have managed only three wins in 17 games since a season-high three-game winning streak May 7-9.
  • The right-hander, who turned 23 Saturday, allowed two runs and six hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings, while the offense generated four hits in a 4-2, 12-inning loss to Baltimore on Friday.
  • Despite that solid performance, Zimmermann is 0-1 with a 6.98 ERA in his last five starts after starting the season by winning his first two with a 2.38 ERA.
  • One of his victories, though, came at New York on April 26, when he gave up one run and six hits in 5 1-3 innings of an 8-1 win
  • A Florida man at the center of a massive steroid bust has told law enforcement officials that he sold performance-enhancing drugs to pro athletes, including those on the Washington Nationals and Washington Capitals.(Dont wanna start anything but this cant be good)

killer-instinct-snes-cover-front

Yet another opportunity for the Mets to work on that killer instict. The Mets have swept both mini series (2 games) against the Braves and Phillies, they also have a 3 game sweep against the Pirates. With over 40 million dollars on the DL the Mets managed to put up 6 runs over the Nationals yesterday. Tonight the Nationals have to contend with the great Johan Santana (somebody give Manny Acta a Flask with the hard stuff). Good teams are able to  close the door and beat the teams they are supposed to beat. The Mets could not have selected a better guy to go out there to do just that. LGM!!

    We’ve got the teamwork
    To make the dream work.
    Let’s Go…Let’s Go Mets!’

    The Don. Love it!
Johan on the mound tonight. This is just like back in the mid 80’s when Doc was on the mound. I tried never to miss those games (harder back then when in my area, only games on for free were on WOR on weekends and week games you had to buy Sports Channel-or whatever it was). You just knew when Doc took the mound, you were almost certainly looking at a W. It’s the same thing now with Johan.

    1. dirtysanchez

lol i wish i was old enough to remember the doc in the 80′s with the mets…closest i got to an ace was al leiter

      1. oleosmirf

dont worry Johan will be here for years to come…

      2. metsfan4decades

He was something to see, that’s for sure.
Have to admit I’m old enough to have seen Seaver pitch for the Mets too.

    2. saltygary

SportsChannel days sucked. I had one friend that got the channel and my mom refused to pay for it.

  3. trs86

That is not good about the steroids.

    1. dirtysanchez

      not at all…

      1. trs86

So do we even want to guess who?

        1. metsfan4decades

Yikes! I don’t think I even want to know. either that, or I agree with Dentulous below. Just come out, admit it, get it over with, go from there…

        2. GravediggerHebner

There is one Nats OF, currently on the DL, who has anger management issues and once threatened to kill his wife. Not Lastings Milledge BTW.

    2. dentulous

yeah, its never good. Just wont go away. Kinda just wish everyone would come out and admit it so the game could move on.

  4. GravediggerHebner

Damn, that Johan is a Dapper Don.

  5. GravediggerHebner

    Great news about Cora.

  6. trs86

Oh, yeah. I forgot. Did you guys see that Zambrano tirade?

    1. GravediggerHebner

It was a classic. Lucky for him the umpire clearly bumped into him, so maybe he’ll get a “Leiter” suspension.

      1. trs86

I love the fact that he ejected the umpire. As a basketball coach I have always wanted to do that.

        1. GravediggerHebner

That was great, we’ll be seeing that replay for some time.

Alright, I’m out. I’ll be scoring at home!

          Back with the post game.

Just…wow. I wouldn’t have been anywhere near him in the dugout when he was swinging that bat.

          1. saltygary

No doubt. It doesn’t look like he is a fan of the new Gatorade campaign.

Over on MLBTR, Nats GM Mike Rizzo was quoted:
“Nick Johnson, or (Josh) Willingham, or (Austin) Kearns, anyone on our roster, if we can make a good baseball trade and improve ourselves, not only for our present but also for our future — a player that can impact us — we have to make those kinds of trades.”

Nothing like waving the white flag so early. I’m guessing here but those impact players he’s looking for have to be pitching, particularly the BP, no?

  8. metsfan4decades

Nice, Ramon. That’s one play Delgado had down pat – scooping those low throws.

    1. oleosmirf

well you gotta expect that with Murphy over at 1B…

  9. dirtysanchez

    cmon murph
they gave nick a hit for that??

  10. trs86

Quick someone switch Murphy and Johnson’s hats. They will never know.

    1. wannybackstra

Look at the size of Johnson’s melon — it will be obvious.

      1. trs86

LOL, would it make Murphy a worse fielder?

  11. mrose

johan’s 1st inning WHIP + ERA must be so much higher than the rest…it seems hes always getting in and out of trouble early.

    1. trs86

He has given up 11 total (WHIP) in 9 games in the 1st inning. The 6th inning is his worst. 15 total in 9 starts.

      1. sabermetrician

        Good stats trs.

        1. trs86

Hey I knew you would like them.

          1. mrose

who woulda thought, STATS to prove something :)

  12. metsfan4decades

    Just classic Johan.

  13. wannybackstra

Willingham just saw a slight decline in his impressive career numbers against the Mets:

    .277 .379 .508

  14. wannybackstra

re: Steroids. It wouldn’t make a difference to anyone if any recent Nationals player was implicated. But it sure would be a big deal if the Capitals players were any of Ovechkin, Green or Semin, etc.

  15. dirtysanchez

HITTERS ARE HITTING 0.85 OFF SANTANA WITH RISP!!

    1. wannybackstra

LOL. I hope you mean .085!

      1. dirtysanchez

        lol yea that too ;p

  16. metsfan4decades

Saw Pagan on Wheelhouse. They tried to bate him with questions about with Church out, he’s arguably the best replacement and does he resent trying to vie for playing time? Angel was having none of it though. Just said, who plays where is not a question for me. When I’m in the lineup, or inserted later, I just try and do whatever I can to help the ball club get a win.

    1. trs86

Pagan is one of a few reasons that I believe Church is very tradeable.

      1. wannybackstra

Pagan certainly has looked good in his short spurts. But his minro league numbers, .280 .339 .375, suggest that he is in his appropriate role as a 5th outfielder. His defense and speed make him a good fit for that role. But his .375 SLG% does not indicate a guy who should play every day in the big leagues.

        1. trs86

No for sure not everyday. But we can get by using him and the others in RF if we need to trade Church.

          1. wannybackstra

Given the utter nothing we’ve gotten from Church so far this season (and I do not mean that as a knock on him as much as the manager and on his never ending injuries), I agree that they could patch together RF from among Tatis, Reed, Pagan, Martinez and maybe even Cory Sullivan if he ever gets going at AAA.

  17. dirtysanchez

man…zim is throwing darts up there

  18. dirtysanchez

    SLAPPY!!

  28. dentulous

    Sheff is a monster!

  29. dirtysanchez

wow this masn announcer is ripping the pitching staff a new one lol

  30. trs86

LOL, I know the Sheff part. But did anyone catch Ron Darling’s converstaion with our new addition Wilson Valdez?
Ron: Hello my name is Ron Darling
    Wilson: Who are you?

    1. dirtysanchez

      lmaooo you serious

      1. trs86

Yeah, I think I found tomorrow’s The Real Dirty Mets Joke of the Day.

    2. metsfan4decades

      Yeah – hahahahaha!
      Uh, Wilson – meet GK&R.

    3. sabermetrician

      Really? LMAO

  31. dirtysanchez

    well…johan with a 2 run lead against the nats…

    1. wannybackstra

      game over?

  32. dwrightisking

    1st inning:
    Santana-27 pitches
    Zimmermann-32 pitches

    1. wannybackstra

this inning seems much more efficient so far.

      1. dwrightisking

yup took him 9 pitches! very nice

  33. dirtysanchez

    masn announcers
“johan is getting the calls that zimmermann isnt getting”
    UMM..ITS JOHAN SANTANA!

    1. sabermetrician

And he gets those calls because they’re in the strike zone. Zimmermann is not. LOL

  34. dirtysanchez

    1-2-3

  35. dirtysanchez

    LETS GO FMART!

  36. dirtysanchez

geez…no need for an age verification on fmart….kid looks like hes 16 loll

  37. dwrightisking

    well that was fast

  38. metsfan4decades

The ‘newness’ of Citi Field must be wearing off and fans must now be watching the game instead of wandering around. Anyone notice how much louder the crowd has been these last two nights? They’re into it….

    1. dirtysanchez

yea lol citi seemed like a grave yard earlier in the year. Its not as loud as shea yet but it has potential….

  39. dirtysanchez

is it ok to have a mancrush on this guy….
    Santana is just so awsome….

    1. dentulous

i think thats cool. Only time it is excusable though… ;)

      1. dirtysanchez

LOL okayyy finnnnee just this one time lol ;p

    2. metsfan4decades

      Ha!
Well being female – I can tell you the pic of Johan labeled ‘The Don’ is very GQ. He’s got the talent, he’s got the looks, he’s got the attitude. What’s not to like?

      1. dirtysanchez

        lol hes married ;p

        1. metsfan4decades

          Ha! Yeah, I know. So am I. Doesn’t mean I can’t look – lol.

          1. trs86

            Whoa, thats a different blog.

          2. metsfan4decades

            Yeah – lol. Sorry…
I’m old enough to be his mother anyway.
I’ll just finish by saying talent wise, I’m so glad he’s a NYM.

          3. trs86

            Me TOO.

          4. dirtysanchez

lol nothin wrong with lookin ;p

          5. dwrightisking

definitely nothing wrong with looking. I have D.Wright posters on my bedroom wall…my husband complains every now and then but he knew from the beginning that he was marrying a Met fan!

          6. metsfan4decades

Ha! A DWright fan. So nice to see. How anyone could have advocated trading him is just, well – ludicrous!

          7. wannybackstra

It’s only fair then that you hang a poster of Wright’s girlfriend for your husband’s enjoyment!

  40. dwrightisking

    where’s keith been lately?

    1. wannybackstra

He couldn’t make it out tonight — he’s coloring his hair.

      1. metsfan4decades

OMG – LOL over here. Good one, Wanny.
        Gotta love Keith.

        1. oleosmirf

i love those just for men commercials with Clyde. No play for Mr. Grey…

  41. sabermetrician

    Sheff for the all-star team!

  42. dirtysanchez

    I LOVE SANTANA

  43. dwrightisking

    we don’t care ms.falco

  44. dirtysanchez

    beautiful bunt by slappy

    1. trs86

I like the fact it was not a sacrifice attempt.

      1. metsfan4decades

Luie doing whatever he can, knowing his strengths and weakness. I’d say we all had to know he would be better than last year, if he stays healthy. Last year for him was just that bad….

        1. dirtysanchez

i compare him to tron in 05…

        2. saltygary

Slappy has made me eat a tone of crow this year. Good for him.

  45. dirtysanchez

    damn..right down the pipe…

  46. wannybackstra

    cue Alex.

  47. tkfj

One gripe is that Wright goes down looking far too often.

    1. dirtysanchez

has alot of k’s but all the good hitters have em…tough pitch tho..zim set him up beautiful for that one with the slider.

      1. tkfj

Thing is, i don’t mind them as much if he protects with 2 strikes.

    2. wannybackstra

he’s got a lot of walks too. the benefits outweigh the negatives for hitters who see a lot of pitches (not only in terms of walks and Ks but in terms of hitting good pitches).

  48. dirtysanchez

mannnnnn cmon guys…kids throwing cake out there…

  49. wannybackstra

    Man, was Murphy due.

    1. sabermetrician

      Big time.

  50. tkfj
