The Don's Record: 6-2 Era: 1.50Â Â K: 75 BB: 14 WHIP: 1.05

Mets Notes(hat tip to yahoo and adam rubin):

  • Santana looks to win a third consecutive start Wednesday night and help the Mets complete a three-game sweep of the hapless Washington Nationals.
  • The Mets have provided Santana  with 12 runs of support to help him win his last two starts. That’s one more run than they managed in his first seven outings of the season, when he went 4-2 with a 0.78 ERA.
  • The two-time Cy Young Award winner overcame three errors Friday, allowing three runs – two earned – and seven hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings of a 5-3 win at Boston.
  • Lately, the Mets have been better defensively, winning three of their last four games without a miscue to match their longest streak of the season.
  • New York has won 10 of the last 13 meetings with the Nationals, including five of six at home. However, the club hasn’t swept them in a three-game series since April 15-17, 2008.
  • Since joining the Mets in a five-player trade from Minnesota prior to the start of the 2008 season, Santana has won all four of his starts against the Nationals with a 2.33 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 27 innings. He beat them again on April 24, yielding one run and six hits while fanning 10 in six innings of a 4-3 victory at Citi Field
  • Jerry Manuel said Omir Santos was in the original starting lineup, but was pulled because of a bruised shin, which he suffered Tuesday.
  • Also, Manuel said he intends to do a platoon at first base, despite using Fernando Tatis on Tuesday against righthander Craig Stammen. The manager said he thought slumping Daniel Murphy needed a break. Tatis should return to first base on Friday, after an off-day, with the Marlins scheduled to throw a southpaw in the series opener.
  • Manuel said infielder Wilson Valdez, acquired from Cleveland, should get his first Mets start Saturday in a day game, although he’s unsure whether it will come in place of Ramon Martinez or Luis Castillo.
  • Alex Cora expects to have a three-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo this weekend, before being activated early next week, he tells the Daily News. Cora hopes to play a game apiece at second base, DH and shortstop. Meanwhile, Jose Reyes and Ryan Church should be headed to the Mets’ complex in Florida soon.

Nationals Notes(hat tip yahoo and federal baseball):
  • The Nationals own the worst record in baseball, are have managed only three wins in 17 games since a season-high three-game winning streak May 7-9.
  • The right-hander, who turned 23 Saturday, allowed two runs and six hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings, while the offense generated four hits in a 4-2, 12-inning loss to Baltimore on Friday.
  • Despite that solid performance, Zimmermann is 0-1 with a 6.98 ERA in his last five starts after starting the season by winning his first two with a 2.38 ERA.
  • One of his victories, though, came at New York on April 26, when he gave up one run and six hits in 5 1-3 innings of an 8-1 win
  • A Florida man at the center of a massive steroid bust has told law enforcement officials that he sold performance-enhancing drugs to pro athletes, including those on the Washington Nationals and Washington Capitals.(Dont wanna start anything but this cant be good)

killer-instinct-snes-cover-front

Yet another opportunity for the Mets to work on that killer instict. The Mets have swept both mini series (2 games) against the Braves and Phillies, they also have a 3 game sweep against the Pirates. With over 40 million dollars on the DL the Mets managed to put up 6 runs over the Nationals yesterday. Tonight the Nationals have to contend with the great Johan Santana (somebody give Manny Acta a Flask with the hard stuff). Good teams are able to  close the door and beat the teams they are supposed to beat. The Mets could not have selected a better guy to go out there to do just that. LGM!!

Was it just me or yesterday when Ramon MARTINEZ came out to bat last night, they had the “Darth Vader” theme song for him? lol Mixed up the Ramons.

  2. CaseStreet

Martinez is 20. Have to keep on reminding myself. That’s just crazy.

    1. dirtysanchez

i know..his baby face makes it ezier to remember lol

  3. dirtysanchez

    OH MANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
    YOU BENCHED….

  4. QnsNative718

    BAD, BAD, BAD.

  5. metsfan4decades

    Oh, rookie mistake there.

  6. kingman26

Yeah, sit him down NOW. That is utterly inexcusable.

    1. QnsNative718

      Absolutely. Bench him for Reed.

      1. QnsNative718

        Im serious.

        1. kingman26

I agree…I mean, day two in the bigs, and age 20—is he tired? Kill that bad habit right now.

  7. QnsNative718

F-Mart doesnt run out a popped up ball in the infield that was dropped. Bad. Bad. Bad.

  8. saltygary

    You 20 you run.

  9. CaseStreet

Do players actually run on that?

    1. QnsNative718

      You kidding?

      1. CaseStreet

No, just don’t remember seeing players run on a pop up to the catcher. Of course I have a memory like a goldfish.

        1. QnsNative718

That ball never left the infield. A rookie mistake but he needs to be benched tonight.

          1. trs86

Do you think he needs to be benched? I think he won’t be doing that for a long time. Quite embarrassing and his teammates will let him know.

          2. QnsNative718

It was a lazy effort. As a matter of fact, it was NO effort. The ball wasnt even close to be foul. He needs to be taught a lesson. He’s been our “golden boy”, but in this case, no exceptions. Id bench him in a heart beat.

          3. trs86

I guess, I just think that more than anything a player and his teammates teach him more than a manager ever can.

          4. QnsNative718

They can do both. Pure ’86 style. ; )

          5. kingman26

I am with QnsNativeChestRockwell on this one…most guys would jog down the line, and if he had, he would have been safe….

  10. trs86

    Let him know guys.

  11. trs86

I don’t think you have to bench him for that, I don’t see him doing again for a long time. His teammates will take care of that.

  12. metsfan4decades

Just saw where Kevin B. went out there and talked to like 10 fans and they all said they didn’t think it hit the sign.
Gary said the other night during that 6 minute long review that the umps are privy to all camera shots from different angles that they don’t show on the air. I’m thinking they saw something that made them think it hit the sign…

    1. trs86

It looked like it hit it to me. The ball changed it’s flight path.

      1. metsfan4decades

And I saw that too from 1 of the 3 angles they showed.

    2. QnsNative718

      Oh, didnt know that.

      1. metsfan4decades

Gary just said they have access to all angles from two different broadcasts. If you’re watching SNY, then they’re only showing the angles from their broadcast, I guess.

        1. QnsNative718

Interesting. So as you said, they saw something we didnt see.

    3. fongy2

Sorry I told you guys over
and over, this kid is a looong
      way from being everyday ready
      let alone being a star.

      1. trs86

Fong we gotta give him some more time before we say that. Not comparing him to Straw but what did Straw start? 0-11?

        1. fongy2

          Understood
          BUT my opinion
is based on seeing him a bunch both in
          ’07 and ’08 at
          Bingo. Oh and
          as a prospect
the kid should never be confused with
          Straw at similar ages.

          1. trs86

Again, I prefaced by saying that I am not comparing him to Straw. Just that EVEN Straw struggled in the begining. Fmart for sure seemed to have turned things around a little in the minors this season.

      2. CaseStreet

well, Omar could’ve brought up Willy Mo or Sullivan

        1. fongy2

          Thank you!
Just let the kid play everyday@AAA
          and forget him
          ’til next spring.

          1. trs86

LOL, I think he was offering the counter point to your arguement.

          2. CaseStreet

            you know me too well

          3. fongy2

That was pretty dumb of me not to get it.

          4. CaseStreet

not much of an improvement, so might as well give the kid a taste and see how he performs. Especially if he’s to be a starter in the near future.

  13. dentulous

well, good for Murph, we need his bat.

  14. CaseStreet

Maybe that billboard should have sensors or chalk to show marks left by the ball.

  15. fongy2

OK! Well as the Pen was the only
    improvement made by Omar.
Nows their time! Your Ace gave us
another big time outing and we got
some timely hits. Now rested,go get
    outs Bullpen!

    1. CaseStreet

      Fong,

no love for Livan, Cora, Shef?

      1. fongy2

        Omar does get credit
        for minimal risks
        like Livan & Sheff.
        AND Cora? 2yr contract?
        c’mon!

        1. CaseStreet

he’s def an improvement over Easley.

          1. fongy2

            Right now hes
            contributing as
            much.

        2. fongy2

But it aint like you or me case wouldnt have taken a
          flyer on Livan
          or Sheff.

          1. CaseStreet

not saying Omar is a genius, just that he improved other areas other than the BP.

          2. fongy2

            where dude?
            OF?
            Bench?
            Rotation?

          3. kingman26

Ooh Fong buddy, the bench is looking good…Cora, Shef (who was gotten as a bench player), Santos…gotta like that bench…and how good will it be when all of our regulars are back?

          4. CaseStreet

what are they saying in the crowds?

    2. kingman26

Santos off the scrap heap was pretty good….

      1. fongy2

Again,Brock even a blind sqirrel finds
        a nut sometimes.

        1. kingman26

HAHA! I missed you man; glad you have not changed!

And good luck with the upcoming wedding!!

          1. fongy2

            Thank you Sir!
            I think?
            16 days
            and counting
            b/t/w
            shes there
            tonight

            I’m
            blacked

            Something wrong
            ’bout
            that!

  16. QnsNative718

*** Hey authors. I got dibbs on the “FMart Gaffe” post tomorrow. ; )

    1. trs86

      LOL, yours.

  17. metsfan4decades

Well, my niece just called – she’s at the game out there in the outfield seats. She said it didn’t hit the sign and wasn’t a HR.
But disclaimer….she took her finance – long time Met fan – for his B’day. She’s actually a Yankee fan.

    1. trs86

I know I am bias but from my view I think it hit. Balls don’t just drop straight down.

      1. metsfan4decades

        I’m with you.

      2. CaseStreet

        puberty?

        1. QnsNative718

          I got it, Case. HAHAHAHA!!

          1. CaseStreet

            tnx

    2. QnsNative718

How can you even speak to her? lol

      1. metsfan4decades

hahahaha – yeah, well I make an exception b/c you know, family…

        1. johan4cy

          no, i dont know.

          1. QnsNative718

            Lmao..

          2. trs86

Johan, did you see my message about being an author?

          3. johan4cy

            yes, i did

    3. CaseStreet

figures a Yankee fan would say that. lol

      1. QnsNative718

I wouldve thought shed be too busy practicing her Jobba “fist pump” to notice.

        1. metsfan4decades

          HAHAHAHA !!
          Jeter is her hero.

        2. CaseStreet

Jeter Jump Throw followed by a Joba Fist Pump!

    4. kingman26

But the ball clearly changed its path, and dropped straight down—did it hit a bird??

      1. metsfan4decades

Exactly. And that must have been what the umps saw as well.

        1. QnsNative718

          As in Pedro Cerrano?

  18. metsfan4decades

Feliciano looking so much better this year.
Nice job by our BP there in the 7th.

    1. dentulous

Man, I am loving Parnell. Solid BP so far

    2. dirtysanchez

its because manuel is FINALLY using him for lefties only…

      1. fongy2

        Exactly!!

  19. kingman26

Guys, 378 comments so far on the game thread!

Wait, going to check Metsblog…..ZERO comments!!

    1. CaseStreet

      priceless

    2. dentulous

      lol!

    3. trs86

LOL, I got some still waiting in moderation.

    4. QnsNative718

      Ha!

  20. kingman26

OF COURSE it hit the sign! How else would the ball have changed its path??

  21. metsfan4decades

So fans on deck below the Subway sign all say it hit.
Those above the sign say no.
Kevin B. went to both decks and took a poll.

    1. dirtysanchez

if you look closely the sign is broken on the top corner….

  22. dirtysanchez

ugh…these masn announcers are SOOO unprofessional..i miss SNY

  23. metsfan4decades

Phills still losing 5-2. Meyers left the game with right hip inflammation.

    1. trs86

Eh, just SLAP some Ben-Gay on there.

      1. fongy2

        if Mrs.Myers says
        that to him,
        shes REALLY gonna
        get abeat down!

  24. dirtysanchez

is santana in line for the win?

    1. fongy2

      Ah, yeah. ???

  25. dirtysanchez

boy gotta give it to the top of the lineup for getting on for what it seems every inning..

  26. trs86

Why are they spending the entire rest of the time talking about the Murphy HR? Like the umpires would have just called it a HR for the hell of it.

    1. dirtysanchez

do you have the sny feed or masn

      1. trs86

        SNY

        1. dirtysanchez

oh ok…because these masn guys have NOT stopped talking about it..its like ja get over it already ya know…nothing you can do about it now…

          1. trs86

SNY is doing the same thing. Gary is just sure it did not hit.

    2. CaseStreet

      cuz they got it wrong

      1. trs86

I REALLY disagree Case. The ball changed flight path and fell straight down. That does not happen unless it hits SOMETHING.

        1. CaseStreet

I mean, GKR, got it wrong, so they have to keep on talking about it to show everyone how they could’ve been right

          1. dirtysanchez

            lolll
at real i totally agree. The ball came straight down..it hit something.

          2. kingman26

It sure did…they should be looking for downed birds out there, as that is the only other rational explanation other than the almost certainty that it hit the wall…..

  27. dirtysanchez

    BALK!!!!

  28. metsfan4decades

    Balk! Nice.

  29. CaseStreet

I hate the balk rule. It should be called only if the pitcher is attempting to trick the runner, not when the pitcher farts

    1. metsfan4decades

      LOL.

    2. dirtysanchez

lol he sharted man…no breaks ;p

    3. QnsNative718

      haha..

  30. QnsNative718

      1. dirtysanchez

        agreed..
i know its only 2 games but
do you think its too soon?

        1. trs86

No I think it’s great punishment for not running that ball out.

          1. dirtysanchez

oh im talking about no hits so far..

          2. trs86

            To soon for what then?

          3. dirtysanchez

            brought him up too soon
guy was on fire in AAA
maybe its nerves..but he has not looked comfy at the plate…

      2. fongy2

How oh how do you walk
        the lead off hitter??

    2. CaseStreet

I think Nick Evans has shown us how a hot start means nothing. It’s doing it day in and out like my boy Murph.

      1. dirtysanchez

well murph was in a pretty bad streak before tonight..but a bloop and a blast and hes right in it ;p

        1. CaseStreet

          I love Bloops and Blasts.

  42. dirtysanchez

    cmon putz…strikes…strikes..

  43. metsfan4decades

    Jeeze, Putz.

  44. CaseStreet

kingman, what’s up w/ your boy Putz. Lead off walks?

    1. fongy2

      Unforgivable!
      put it over the plate!
      make them hit it.

    2. kingman26

Case, believe me, I am pretty damn disappointed myself…he just is not the same guy as before last year’s injury. Don’t know if he ever will be. Still, he is good, but just not the dominant little Putz I thought we would see.

But, there is a lot of season left….

  45. dirtysanchez

    NICE TURN
Propz to martinez for staying in there for that hit

  46. CaseStreet

    R. Martinez is putting on a clinic @ SS.

    1. fongy2

Yeah, a step to his right
and a step to his left.

  47. dirtysanchez

    MARLINS WON 6-2
if we hold on here…1st place baby with half our team on the DL

    1. metsfan4decades

      1. dirtysanchez

agreed…talk about eating crow huh lol

    2. jonnyballgame
