  • The New York Mets appear to finally be producing offensively when Johan Santana(notes) takes the mound. The ace probably wishes they would shore up the defense as well.

Santana looks to win a third consecutive start Wednesday night and help the Mets complete a three-game sweep of the hapless Washington Nationals.

The Mets (25-20) have provided Santana (6-2, 1.50 ERA) with 12 runs of support to help him win his last two starts. That’s one more run than they managed in his first seven outings of the season, when he went 4-2 with a 0.78 ERA.

New York is among the worst defensive clubs in baseball with 35 errors, 12 of them coming in Santana’s starts with seven in his last three.

“After a mistake or error, you try and bounce back and get the next guy,” Santana said.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner overcame three errors Friday, allowing three runs – two earned – and seven hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings of a 5-3 win at Boston.

“It’s just another impressive performance for him,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. “I do hope at some point we play a real, real crisp game behind him.”

Lately, the Mets have been better defensively, winning three of their last four games without a miscue to match their longest streak of the season. They did it again Tuesday, and got a complete game from Livan Hernandez(notes) to beat Washington 6-1 after taking Monday’s series opener 5-2.

The complete game was the club’s first since Santana threw a three-hitter in a 2-0 win over Florida on Sept. 27.

New York has won 10 of the last 13 meetings with the Nationals (13-32), including five of six at home. However, the club hasn’t swept them in a three-game series since April 15-17, 2008.

Since joining the Mets in a five-player trade from Minnesota prior to the start of the 2008 season, Santana has won all four of his starts against the Nationals with a 2.33 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 27 innings. He beat them again on April 24, yielding one run and six hits while fanning 10 in six innings of a 4-3 victory at Citi Field.

The Mets put All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes and outfielder Ryan Church(notes) on the disabled list Tuesday, and said All-Star center fielder Carlos Beltran(notes) would sit out until the weekend because of a bone bruise below his right knee.

To fill one of the spots, highly touted outfielder Fernando Martinez(notes) was promoted from Triple-A Buffalo. Martinez, 20, went 0 for 3 with a walk in his major league debut.

The Nationals own the worst record in baseball, are have managed only three wins in 17 games since a season-high three-game winning streak May 7-9.

They hope Jordan Zimmermann(notes) (2-1, 5.71) can give them another quality start.

The right-hander, who turned 23 Saturday, allowed two runs and six hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings, while the offense generated four hits in a 4-2, 12-inning loss to Baltimore on Friday.

“He threw the ball very well,” Nationals manager Manny Acta told the team’s official Web site. “He was very aggressive. His fastball has serious life. It showed because he basically manhandled all those lefties. He had a good tempo, good fastball, good slider for him.”

Despite that solid performance, Zimmermann is 0-1 with a 6.98 ERA in his last five starts after starting the season by winning his first two with a 2.38 ERA.

One of his victories, though, came at New York on April 26, when he gave up one run and six hits in 5 1-3 innings of an 8-1 win.

LOL, Dirty’s post inspired me. When I thought sweep, I thought Russian Leg Sweep. LOL.

      2. gategem

I have very little (if any) interest in Wrestling (except for the Divas of course) but the son of a close friend of mine went to school with and is a good friend of a professional wrestler. They both went to Ward Melville HS and the wrestler was the Principal’s son. I saw the wrestler only once and I was taken aback by his size. His name is Mickey Foley. Have any of you heard of him?

well i go back every day to see if he is ever going to turn the comments on. all he needed to do was fix the commenting format…

          1. dentulous

even if he does my friend, we have a new home. He turned his back on us, and the vast majority of us are banned. Good Riddance.

This is the place to be

I just tried logging in for the first time since douche day and he must of purged my id. I re-registered it and it seems to work again. Hopefully I will be able to post when the comments go back on. I want to make sure he knows how cool I think he is especially getting these great interviews and TV appearances. I actually barely posted anything just lurked around a lot. I wonder if they looked here for a quick list of names to purge.

        2. trs86

How could they will all the professional wrestler references today? Who would want to miss this?

          1. johan4cy

Thank heaven for TiVo…hate missing one of Johan’s starts. Hard to remember a pitcher I enjoy watching more.

      1. oleosmirf

if they can only learn to play some defense and hit when he pitches

      2. CaseStreet

I still can’t believe Santana is a Met. Last Winter was crazy for me.

        1. metsgirl31

I remember the day they were working out the contract details to finalize the trade..so on edge. Just knew getting him was going to be a defining moment for this team.

        2. There's Always '10

          Two words: Trade. Lube.

hey guys…on the homepage…. do you like the design on the left column that says NL East Chatter Community, or the right, that says the forums, basically the difference is a circular design, or a regular text design..and what about the colors??

        Right side for sure.

      has anyone seen udontmesswiththejohan?

      1. trs86

Not yet. APB, APB. We are still missing a few. Today’s Metsblog storm sure helped.

      2. mrose

we still need to rescue some people from the shipwreck out of the ocean..everyone here should have their life rafts ready to grab them when seen!

        1. sabermetrician

          Agreed!

        2. dwrightisking

I mentioned this blog on facebook’s metsblog group so maybe some more people will join.

On a side note, I came across this group and thought it was funny:

    9. oleosmirf

isnt it nice that we have a reply button, and the reply doesnt get crammed into a box thats one inch wide or the words extra spaced out

      1. trs86

Yeah, and the funny thing is all you have to do is change a setting. We use wordpress here too. How damn hard can it be?

        1. kingman26

TRS, I have been wondering this myself, as on the other site it seems like discovering the Holy Grail, curing the common cold, and winning the lottery all on the same day would be easier for those hacks than having a comments page with a reply button and where the damn comments stay in order.

          1. CaseStreet

I think they need Lots of Luck!

            1. There's Always '10

Hahaha…All you need is me, Little Bit ‘O Luck.

      2. gategem

I noticed while lurking at Metsblog that the replies would eventually disappear into an abyss. I couldn’t believe that someone that earns a living from his blog would run such an amateurish site.

          actual

          1. wannybackstra

Thanks. But I would appreciate if you would do it like Mike Nichols and leave last night’s pitcher in tonight’s lineup and perhaps jumble a few of the players and their positions.

            1. There's Always '10

              Castro is playing CF?

            2. sabermetrician

              Oh shiz! lol

              (comments section closed)

            5. metsfan4decades

              HAHAHAHAHA !!

    11. wannybackstra

For all those Manny Acta fans out there, I actually think Washington’s talent is better than its 13-32 record. Granted, their pitching is a bit of a mess but they can hit. And I think the pitching would improve somewhat if they didn’t play even worse defense than the Mets.

      1. QnsNative718

Horrible offseason for the gNats. Jacked up their offsense and had way too many outfielders. Ignored pitching. They thought Daniel Cabrera was going to be their Ace. Bullpen is the worst in the league.

        1. QnsNative718

You guys hear what Julian Tavares said about being signed by the gNats? Per Gary Cohen, “Its like being at a bar @ 4:00 in the morning and have no where else to go.” (Or something like that)

          1. GravediggerHebner

Yet they kept him. What that says about their organization I’m not sure.

          2. trs86

I caught that last night. Hilarious.

          3. billydeewilliams

            That’s amazingly awesome.

            1. QnsNative718

Awesomely Amazing. Sorry, I couldnt help myself.

      2. GravediggerHebner

Two big IFs: If they can keep the majority of the starting staff together; and
If they improve with time served, their starting pitching with ‘Ace’ Jordan Zimmermann is going to be scary good in say, 2012.

        1. wannybackstra

Help is on the way for Zimmerman, who likely won’t be their ace when Strasburg arrives as early as next season… or before…

Plus Detwiler is already there and the Nats have a second high draft pick after failing to sign Aaron Crow last year.

    12. There's Always '10

      Dear TRS & Dirty,

Please get rid of the reply button and revert back to only numbers. As you can tell, the comments section on Metsblog is much more lively.

      Thanks,
      J-LOL

      1. mrose

yea..it makes more sense to say
“replying to comment 42… blah blah blah” :)

        lol

        1. There's Always '10

Can we at least take a poll? If need be, I’ll ask you guys in Dutch.

      2. trs86

Hey there were guys on there telling us that nesting was dead. Guys come over here a nest ALL you want.

        1. There's Always '10

I remember someone on Metsblog wrote once as his signature:

“Birds will not nest below this level”

Haven’t seen him in a while. The Reply Nazi must have gotten him.

    13. There's Always '10

Any truth to the rumor Jerry is going to bench F-Mart due to taking Church’s place on the roster?

    14. DNDJohan aka kistics

Jon Heyman says that AGon might be available. Why would they want to do that?

      1. CaseStreet

Cuz Jon Heyman has nothing better to do. It’ll never happen.

      2. GravediggerHebner

They would at least in theory be able to rebuild their entire system by trading him, but it’s hard to send up the major league white flag with the way they’re playing right now.

    15. metsfan4decades

Glad to see Murph in the line up tonight. He’d better be on his game defensively behind Johan. Goal for tonight should be to play crisp baseball. Johan always does his part, now it’s time to give him a game with no errors and some runs scored.

      1. dentulous

he has shown a good glove, especially with all the crappy throws R-Mart was making.

    16. trs86

Hey guys, I was going to make a post on this but it happen too quickly. We are now over 3,000 comments. Not bad for less than a week.

      1. dentulous

Many more milestones to come, especially with all the new folks.

      2. billydeewilliams

and incredibly, most of them have been intelligent and positive.

        1. dentulous

well, we have been winning…. ;)

        2. wannybackstra

I admit it will only take one more minor Manuel foul-up to set me off on him, though…

          1. billydeewilliams

It’s coming soon enough…there’s no getting around it.

            1. There's Always '10

Something like not knowing what a double switch is?

      3. mrose

        that is insane…

        1. kingman26

With all of today’s newcomers, my guess is that we are going to see impressive numbers for tonight’s game thread….

And you deserve it SO much.

    17. dwrightisking

The lineup I posted above was from Rubin’s Daily News blog but Cerrone just posted that FMart is actually batting 6th. I’m not sure who is right.

      1. There's Always '10

Why don’t you comment on it on Metsblog?

        1. kingman26

Every time I look at your name, I want to call you dentilicious.

    19. CaseStreet

I think we need an about page and a FAQ page.

      1. There's Always '10

Can we have an aboot page too, for the Mets fans in Montreal?

        1. CaseStreet

man…if trashing cerrone on this site was the equivalent of beating up metsblog, that site would look like joe pesci and his brother at the end of casino.

          1. kingman26

      Case and Grave—

Thanks for the instructions for adding a picture—-I managed to upload about the only good one I could find of a finally-grown-up Kingman, smiling and waving at least year’s last day at Shea celebration. Maybe he is not obnoxious anymore….

      1. There's Always '10

You may have to one day change your name to Martinez26.

        1. kingman26

Ha! I must say, I did think it was cool to see number 26 in RF….hopefully he can hit with a little of the other 26′s power, but be a little better at every other aspect of the game!

          1. There's Always '10

I think he will be fine. He looked obviously nervous/excited and that is not a good thing in baseball. He is only 20 yrs old. Three at bats do not make a career. I think he needs to get that first hit out of the way and hopefully he’ll be here to stay.

            1. kingman26

              Agreed 100%.

    22. joer

You know its going to be the 5th inning with the score 0 to 0 lol and we will be just begging for 1 or 2 runs to get Johan the win!!

Lets all say a prayer for one of those 4 run first innings we use to get on an everyday basis or at least it seemed!

Martinez hits his first bomb tonight…I got the vision from the Mets lady of 1986 who use to sit behind home plate and swirl her hands violently in a circle!!

      Lets Go Mets!!

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Mets offense need to be patient with this Zimmerman kid. Get him out of the mound as soon as you can and play with their version of ’2008 Mets’ Bullpen..

2nd best thing about this is we don’t have to hear from “phillygalfan”.

            lmao… no, yours is hillarious

            1. There's Always '10

Thanks dude. There is something very lovable about a team that makes it so easy to hate them.

          2. kingman26

Gotta respectfully suggest that not seeing the very worst, most negative, and completely superfluous poster in Metsblog history, Rod Kanehl, must surely be in the top five….

            1. dwrightisking

              don’t forget firemetsmanagement aka mistermet

            2. kingman26

Yeah, he would have to be tied with Rod for most useless (or least useful.)

            3. CaseStreet

You guys had a nice thing going, what happened? lol

        1. mrose

last night, figured there may be some female fans out there…lol

      5. There's Always '10

One request. Can you put Philadelphia in 2nd place?

    26. There's Always '10

If I bet on that Tampa Bay/Cleveland game from earlier in the week, I would have laughed it off. But, if I bet on that game, then on the Toronto game today (up 8-3 after 7 innings with halladay on the mound – now tied 8-8 in the 10th), I would be very angry. Not that I bet on either game though.

You guys are making everything look so easy. Just click on a division and boom instantly the standings are there. I wonder and believe me Im not trying to defend Matt but does everything get more complicated and harder to do when the volume of people gets very high? If not Matt really didnt improve the fan experience or even care. Nice Job!

Good News I reanacted today’s game on RBI baseball 2 for the NES, and it played out pretty realistically. NYM v. MTL. Sid played the part of Johan and got shoddy defense two errors, one by each middle infielder and gave up 6 runs (4 ER) in 6 innings. Mets trailed 7-3 going into the ninth, got a couple runs of the crappy Mtl bullpen and trailed 7-5 with one out. Pinch hit hr by Teufel to make it 7-6, Kevin McReynolds hits a game tying hr to make it 7-7. Mets win in 10, 8-7. Makes perfect sense.

Johan on the mound tonight. This is just like back in the mid 80′s when Doc was on the mound. I tried never to miss those games (harder back then when in my area, only games on for free were on WOR on weekends and week games you had to buy Sports Channel-or whatever it was). You just knew when Doc took the mound, you were almost certainly looking at a W. It’s the same thing now with Johan.
