Ollie, Ollie, Ollie, Oy! Oy! Oy! (Vey)

Déjà vu all over again

Déjà vu all over again

Today it’s been reported that Oliver Perez has had a setback.  To suggest he’s had a setback sort of implies that he was making progress, but his recent minor league rehab outing showed little if any of that.  To be fair, the setback is related more to patellar tendinitis and less to pitching performance.  However,  Tim Redding’s poor performance today and this setback for Perez make the acquisition of 2005 Chicago White Sox #1 draft pick Lance Broadway more relevant.  Broadway seems less likely to be AAA filler and more likely to find himself in the major league rotation the way things are currently unfolding.  Of course Broadway will have to choose a different uniform number if he is indeed recalled.

#41? I think not

            lol ok

Ollie is just an awful pitcher end of story. Ive been saying this for 2 years now and while i must sound like a broken record, all he has is a funky delivery and a hit or miss curve ball which makes him appear to have good stuff. The problem is once the batters get familiar with him, he becomes useless.

Now the Mets are on the hook for a big contract and will be forced to play a guy who cant get outs b/c Omar and the Wilpons will refuse to cut their losses, admit a mistake and move on.

    1. baseballmercenaries

he was a throw in for a reason..no one would be like hey here’s a decent picture

      1. baseballmercenaries

        pitcher

      2. Kingman 26

He was far better than a decent picture in 2007 and 2008.

    2. Kingman 26

How can they be expected to cut their losses less than 1/3 of the way into season one of a 3 year deal for $36 million, when he is so young, and while he certainly was awful in his games this year, he was most definitely nothing close to awful in his 2+ years as a Met before 2009?

Oleo, I respectfully ask—what would you be saying if they cut him and next year he turns up on the Phils or the Braves pitching like he did in 2007??

      1. trs86

The real question is can they continue to put him on the DL? He will not accept a normal minor league assignment yet he can’t be up either. Then again, he would be replacing Redding.

        1. oleosmirf

why not find someone who doesn’t suck?

          1. trs86

Again, Oleo you can’t think it’s realistic that they are going to just release Ollie. We can debate if they should have signed him but that does not change the fact that they did. He will have to be in their plans, like it or not.

          2. oleosmirf

what i’m saying is calling up Ollie at any point will hurt our team…

          3. trs86

You can’t think that Oleo, did he hurt the team last year in the 2nd half? 2007?
Lets just hope he gets it together because really we don’t have a choice but to.

          4. oleosmirf

            he did in September

          5. CaseStreet

            I think he’s a good gamble.

You have the best pitcher in the game in Johan.
Two plus average pitchers in Pelf and Maine.
Then you have a competent 5th starter in Livan.

I think there’s room for a guy like Ollie who can be awful and great, but most of the time than not will win us games.

          6. trs86

If Ollie is healthy then I can’t see him being worse than the average #5.

          7. oleosmirf

the problem is Ollie is “great” once every 4 starts or so and you arent guaranteed to win those games because Ollie cant even last into the 7th inning.

But when Ollie gives up 6 runs in 3 IP then we lose every time…

          8. CaseStreet

“But when Ollie gives up 6 runs in 3 IP then we lose every time…”

            unfortunately, that is true

      2. oleosmirf

i would say Good Riddance, He’s your problem now because he’s bound to go back to the bad Ollie the second after you lock him up long term…

        1. trs86

Locking him up long term? He is already locked up. If we release him then no matter who he signs with they will only pay him league min.
The best we could hope for now is that he would accept a true AAA assignment and we can get enough out of him to only have to eat half his contract instead of all of it.

          1. oleosmirf

well if he signed with Philly or Atlanta and had 1 good year he would get another multi-year contract which would turn into a disaster…

          2. trs86

He still would not Oleo. He would still be paid by us for the next 2 years after this one.

          3. oleosmirf

regardless i’d rather him pitch someplace else then as our #5 SP. Just look at how much better we’ve been without him…

          4. Kingman 26

Well, we are 1–4 in Redding and Niese’s starts, so other than maybe the possibility that we are 0–5 if Ollie pitched those games and went even less innings, we really are not better off without him in the number 5 spot at this point.

          5. CaseStreet

            that bad, wow

makes the Livan signing that much better. How we got him on a minor league contract and just $2M performance based, too.

Too bad, the Chief didn’t work out. What’s he up to nowadays?

      3. CaseStreet

hey king, here’s my take on Ollie-gate,

I understand people’s frustrations w/ Ollie. He’s getting paid bookoo money and has been horrible when the team needs him to perform equal to how he’s getting paid.

I never really understood, comparing a player’s salary to their performance. IMO, a player’s contract has nothing to do w/ his performance expectations. I think expectations should be based on past performance and future potential. That’s it.
I expect Ollie to perform like he did in 07, good but not great. However, in 08, he also showed that he can flat out dominate. But also, this year he’s been awful.

So, I expect Ollie to come back and be good, but not great. Sometimes, he’ll be awful. I really don’t care what he’s getting paid.

So, plz guys. Let’s not get crazy here. Ollie isn’t great, but in the end, I think everyone will be happy that he’s pitching for the Mets.

        1. trs86

Whew lets not go overboard on saying we will be happy. One game at a time maybe. However, I agree on salary. We did not just say, “Hey lets pay Ollie 3/36″

          1. CaseStreet

            lol

        2. Kingman 26

“I think expectations should be based on past performance and future potential.”

Ah, once again Case, I totally agree.

Could not have said it better, and frankly, I wish I had written that!

          1. CaseStreet

            tnx, king

as with Castillo, I really hope Perez makes everyone eat crow and I’ll bet they’ll be glad to eat that crow if it means we’re in the playoffs

          2. Kingman 26

Yeah, and Castillo is a great comparison. He was a good player for years, and now that he is healthy, gee, what a shock, he is a good player again!

I cannot fathom that Ollie is done at age 27. With his situation and the injuries to everyone bur Omar and Jeff, we are still in good shape.

I hope the Castilo crow-eaters are not full and save room for some Ollie crow later in the year.

    3. trs86

I don’t think it has anything to do with him being figured out by hitters. It’s all about Ollie being figured out by himself.

      1. baseballmercenaries

thats the thing he lacks thought..if he would tell him oh he was on the fastball and foul it back let me come with a breaking pitch..no he’ll continue to try to use that one pitch or will continue to use that one pitch to get someone out

        1. trs86

That’s when you need a catcher like Pudge to catch him.

          1. gland

Pudge Santos? That has a nice ring to it!

  4. DNDJohan aka kistics

Stupid Ollie. I think once Ollie comes back, and is the same Ollie (walking 4+ batters), Omar needs to seriously consider eating some of his salary and trade him.
