Post Game: Florida Marlins 7, New York Mets 3

blowout_01The Florida Marlins took a 6 run lead when they scored 3 runs in the top of the 5th inning off of Met starter Tim Redding to blow the game open and never looked back as they coasted to a 7-3 victory.  Jeremy Hermida drove in all 3 of the 5th inning runs with a home run off of the Pepsi Porch. The Mets did pose a slight threat with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, but Leo Nunez came on to strike out Met rookie Fernando Martinez to end the game with runners on 2nd & 3rd.

The Mets played their full cast of Scrubs today and after the Marlins scored 2 runs in the 1st inning, many in the crowd of 40,727 began to line up at the Shake Shack knowing they needed something good to remember about their trip to Citi Field.

Odd numbered innings were not good to Redding.  He gave up 2 runs each in the 1st and 3rd innings, and surrendered 3 more in the 5th without recording an out before being replaced by Sean Green. Green, Ken Takahashi and Brian Stokes pitched scoreless relief the rest of the way but by then the game had been decided.

In addition to the fine work of the bullpen, the other bright spot of the day for the Mets was the first Major League hit for Fernando Martinez, a 3rd inning single.  Martinez later doubled in a run but finished his 2-5 day by striking out on a checked swing to end the ballgame.  The other Fernando, Fernando Tatis, drove in the first Met run with a 2 out single in the 1st inning.  It was Tatis’ first hit with 2 outs and runners in scoring position in 16 tries this season.  Also, Brian Schneider returned from the disabled list to single and walk in 4 plate appearances.

clevelandcavaliersvorlandomagicgame44nsczflfciulThe checked swing call to end the game was debatable, but apparently umpire and Met nemesis Angel Hernandez wanted plenty of time for dinner before tonight’s NBA playoff basketball game.

So much for every game matters. I feel bad for the fans at Citi. Jerry didnt give them the opportunity to watch a good game. I can understand the mentality that Josh Johnson has owned the Mets so far this season, but you cant tell me the Mets have a better chance of winning with Jeremy Reed, Wilson Valdez and Ramon Martinez in the lineup.

i was annoyed that he needed to sit wright, castillo and sheff on the same day..couldn’t he have done maybe sheff today, then wright tomorrow?

      1. QnsNative718

Absolutely. Today was a joke. Seriously. Dirty, you may remember me as being a supporter of Jerry, but I now seriously doubt him as a manager. As a manager you put a competitive team on the field day in and day out, especially one with intentions of winning a pennent. Ofcourse, you rest your starters every now and then but not 3 in one game and thats not including Reyes and Delgado!

But hey, the bullpen continues to impress. Good job!

Have to agree with native here. Looking at this lineup, it appeared to me it was over before it started. –Not unless their starter was having a really bad day – which obviously didn’t happen.

Guess, I will have to say I am very impressed by our CORE of writers here.

Does this mean you are going to trade me if we don’t ‘win’ enough new members? :-)

LOL, check the banner. Only if you choke in September.

It brought me to the blog front page. Nice work!

Also, very nice touch on how the border color of the banner changes depending on if my mouse is over it or not.

grave – thats a normal link…i tend to like links without that…but thats just me…. thoughts?

          2. GravediggerHebner

I thought it was cool how it turned from Met orange to Met blue, but I trust your judgment. Your work has been stellar throughout so if you think the other way is the way to go I support your choice.

This is the first game this season I had to miss because of a family thing. But hey, not a problem. –Because I can just come to this kick ass blog and get all the post game facts (and accurate no less, how about that?) plus the highlights and a ‘feel’ for how it played out.

You guys are truly amazing. Great post game wrap up, Grave – and thanks for that.

Like the new colors too – Met blue! That MLB scoreboard is great. Truly one stop shopping for all things Mets!

And on the loss…it was questionable with Redding pitching but after I saw that line up – well, even I didn’t have much hope on a W for today. Oh well, we’ll come back and get ‘em tomorrow. Here’s hoping a rested DWright is back in the line up and ready to go along with Sheff.

Someone at the family function was reading off MLB headlines from their Blackberry and it said something about Ollie having a set back in his minor league rehab starts and will likely miss the last one. I’ll go see what I can find on that.

We need another starter. Time to give someone else not named Redding a try.

    1. metsfan4decades

Shoot – that should have said ‘likely miss the next one’ (on Ollie).
