April Showers Bring May Dominance

mrmetflowers2

After struggling to a 9-12 April filled with inconsistency and talk of a wasted 2009 many fans felt the Mets were on the ropes.  Then what happens?  Injuries to Delgado, Reyes, Cora, Beltran, Church, and the list continues to grow even today.  So what makes this story different?  Amid all the disappointments of the past 2 seasons and the daily injuries has ANYONE notices that  the Mets have quietly put together THEIR BEST MAY OF ALL TIME?  Better than  the 1969, 1986, 1988, 2000 and 2006 teams.  The Mets finished off May at 19-9 moving them to 7 games above .500 for the year.  Instead of fans talking about the Mets missing something, it may be that we the fans have been missing something this year.  FAITH.  Why can’t this year be the year that the fans go back to the Mets slogan of You Gotta Believe?

After comparing Mets to flowers, I felt I needed my man card back.

Any lady will tell you that Chuck Norris carries a big gun. Of course we never get to speak with the ladies because in Met world the ladies are on the bus.

Sheffield as sunshine, growing the Mets. Whodathunkit?

Fabulous factoid on the winningest May ever, I had no eyed deer.

April Showers bring May Dominance sounds like something an Allied general might’ve said in WWII. You social studies teachers and your war.

I love the overall gist of this post, but I must confess, i never liked the “Ya Gotta Believe” saying from Tug in 73. I mean, that season ended in crushing disappointment (thanks to a boneheaded move by Yogi in the WS) as well! Then, Tug took the slogan to, of all places, the Phillies. Give me the the Amazins, the Miracle Mets, etc. Keep the Ya Gotta Believes. We all have faith – how else can we possibly come back year after year, decade after decade as Mets fans? We ARE faith.

And now we get the Pirates and Nats for 6 games! I’d be satisfied with 4-5 wins.

We have 4 against the Pirates this week, so it’s 7 games between the two teams. If we come away with only 4 wins, I’ll be greatly disappointed.

      1. prismo

Ah, didn’t realize it was a 4-game series. In that case, they should win 5-6 games. (I wouldn’t argue with 7 though)

        1. darknova306

Well, for a team that wants to show it’s for real in the East, I’d say that anything less than a sweep of the lowly Nats is inexcusable. And we have to take advantage of the Pirates, they’re not playing well outside their starting pitching, and even that’s not overly great. If we were healthy, I’d only be happy with 6+ wins in these 7 games, but due to the injuries I’ll be happy with 5+ wins.

Did we get permission from bmf for the general manual pic ?? Other than that FRUK The BUCKS !!!!!

    1. prismo

      We don’t need permission. ;)
      1. It’s not copyrighted (copyrighted? that sounds terrible)
      2. We’re not using it to make a profit anyway

TRS referenced where he got it from in any case..which is really more of a courtesy..or web etiquette or something. It works though, no worries.

I was just busting chops LOL

Wow, I didn’t realize that was our best May every. Now let’s hope we can buck the trend of the past couple years and not lose 15 games in June.

I’ve always had faith, but over the years this team has done a great job of finding new and innovative ways of crushing that faith. Yeah, we’re doing great despite the injuries, but how long until the fill-ins, back-ups, and stop gap minor leaguers stop producing at their current level? And how many more starts is Livan going to pitch well? Once he falters, we’ll have two worthless rotation spots (I’d rather not even acknowledge the existence of that other 5th starter).
I have faith, but my confidence in this team only goes far enough for me to say I believe they’ll have a winning record at the end of the season. That’s as far as I’m willing to go.

But that’s just it Dark. Logic tells us that we can’t keep it up with the Omar Santos and Angel Pagan’s of the world. Having faith in this years team overrides logic and brings us back to being a Mets fan.

      1. darknova306

You can lack faith but still be a fan. You think I had any faith in the early-90s teams? Good lord no. But I kept watching and following them religiously like always. I’m a fan through and through, and will be rooting for them non-stop until the final out of their season/post-season, but I just don’t see them continuing their winning ways with this patchwork team. I hope I’m wrong, and I hope that the starting pitching keeps up their great work and holds things together until the offense starts getting healthy and can start blowing some teams out.

        1. trs86

But what I am saying is Dark that those teams gave us no reason to have faith. This year’s team has given us every reason to have faith.

          1. darknova306

Yes, they’ve shown some reasons to have faith in them, but they’re current success is based too much on guys that will either A) fall back to Earth, B) see their aging bodies break down, or C) can’t stay healthy in the long run anyway (see: Pagan, Angel). I’ll honestly be surprised if Redding is still in the rotation next week and if Livan maintains his success past his next 2 starts.

        2. There's Always '10

Were you a fan when Richard Hidalgo was supposed to be our power hitter?

          1. darknova306

…ugh the nightmares. Yeah, I’ve been with them through all the dark times since 1990. It’s been a rough ride.

  8. fongy2

Fellas, yeah one can’t count on the
role guys to con’t to carry the team
BUT at some point Reyes will be back
and right now Wright stands at 3HRs.
    And it’s June already.

  9. dirtysanchez
