The New York Mets’ players are dropping like flies. During today’s game, Angel Pagan and John Maine were added to the long list of Mets who are either on the disabled list or nursing injury/illness. Pagan left the game in the top of the 4th inning with what was reported as “right groin discomfort” and Maine left after warming up to start the top of the 7th with a “stomach virus.” The Mets showed a lot of grit and heart, if not a lot of intestinal fortitude, in overcoming this adversity to win the series by defeating the Florida Marlins 3-2.

Porta John Maine
Maine (5-3) threw 6 innings of shutout ball, giving up only 3 hits and allowing 2 walks while striking out 5. Pedro Feliciano ably filled in for Maine by throwing a 1-2-3 inning. J.J. Putz was summoned for the hold to start the 8th, but was ineffective yet again as he recorded only 1 out while allowing 3 baserunners and 1 run before being replaced by rookie Bobby Parnell, who despite allowing 1 inherited runner to score then retired the next 2 batters to preserve the 1 run lead. Met closer Francisco Rodriguez did allow a 2 out walk but ultimately struck out the side in the 9th for his 14th save.
The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd utilizing classic National League small-ball. SS Wilson Valdez drew a 1 out walk, and was sacrificed to 2nd by Maine. Pagan then drove in Valdez with a 2 out double. The Mets added 2 valuable insurance runs in the 7th when back-to-back doubles by Fernando Martinez and Omir Santos plated one run each, giving the Mets a 3-0 lead.
After the game, General Manager Omar Minaya announced that the Mets had made a rare inter-sport trade, acquiring this large ambulance from the Calgary Flames of the NHL in exchange for approximately 60 guilders. Minaya said that he was confident that the injured and ill members of the Met roster would now have adequate medical care.

Famous Met fan
The Daily Show host Jon Stewart was among the 40,482 in attendance and among other things had this exchange with Met TV on-field commentator Kevin Burkhardt about his first Citi Field experience. JS: I had sushi. KB: You couldn’t do that at Shea. JS: Well, you could, but it was just old fish.

just registered for this site, i am a frequent metsblog reader and i must say i really like the postgame and also in depth posts on this blog. I am also a fan of the pics with the witty captions. i am finding myself visiting this site just as much as i do metsblog, keep up the good work. I would just suggest updating the standings as consistently as possible that is always an issue on metsblog and i find it a pet peeve of mine i guess

Great game. Glad to see they pulled it out and preserved the win for Maine who couldn’t keep going although he was pitching what looked to be his best game so far this year.
hahaha – as always, love the graphics that go along with these posts.
And yeah, what’s up with Putz? Is that bone spur causing more problems then anyone is admitting?
I thought he was a great addition to the BP but he’s making me nervous….
