The little engine that could Mets hit the road

El Gordo's Record: 4-1 Era: 4.28 K: 31 BB: 14Â Â Â Â WHIP: 1.41
Mets Notes:
- After an unbeaten May, Hernandez will look to get off to a similarly hot start in June when the surging Mets open a four-game road set against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night.
- New York compiled a 4.46 staff ERA during a 9-12 April, but bettered that mark to a major leagues-best 3.34 in May, and went 19-9.
- Hernandez, who only locked up the Mets’ fifth starter spot late in spring training, has been a major contributor to the turnaround. The veteran right-hander had a 6.75 ERA in four April starts but went 3-0 with a 2.70 ERA over five May outings, concluding with a complete game, six-strikeout effort Tuesday in a 6-1 win against Washington.
- One of those victories came May 10, when Hernandez and New York finished a three-game sweep of Pittsburgh. Hernandez allowed two runs in six innings to improve to 4-4 in his career against the Pirates.
- Regulars Carlos Delgado and Jose Reyes are out for New York. Fill-in Angel Pagan left Sunday’s game with a groin injury and may also miss a few games.
- Hernandez threw his first nine-inning complete game since May 7 of last year, holding the Nationals to a lone run on nine hits in a 6-1 win Tuesday. Hernandez has started against the Pirates just twice in the past three seasons, with little success. He is 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA, allowing seven runs on 17 hits in 10 innings. Hernandez has also struggled mightily in June since 2006, compiling a 4-9 mark with a 6.73 ERA in 17 starts during the month — his highest ERA of any month during that stretch.
- Alex Cora has returned from three games at Triple-A Buffalo. He can’t be activated from the DL until Tuesday, so it’s likely the Mets will wait to put Angel Pagan on the DL until then.
- J.J. Putz reported for work early Monday at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Joined by pitching coach Dan Warthen and bullpen coach Randy Niemann, Putz began throwing a bullpen session at 2:45 p.m. The struggling Putz has been issuing a lot of walks and hasn’t shown the same bite with his signature split-finger fastball. Jerry Manuel felt compelled to replace Putz in the eighth inning Sunday with Bobby Parnell. Parnell allowed an inherited runner to score but stranded the tying run at third base in the Mets’ 3-2 rubber-game win against the Marlins.

Record: 1-6 Era: 5.43 K: 40 BB: 30 WHIP: 1.58
Pirates Notes:
- The Pirates have dropped four of five, scoring two or fewer runs in each contest. Nate McLouth’s first-inning homer was all they could muster Sunday in a 2-1 loss to Houston. Pittsburgh has scored one run or been shut out 15 times this season.
- Snell is 0-2 with a 6.33 ERA in five starts against the Mets – all Pittsburgh losses.
- The last time the Pirates played the Mets, they got swept three straight to stretch their losing streak to a season-high eight games. On the other end of the spectrum were the Mets, who moved their winning streak to seven games with the sweep.
- Pittsburgh gave up 25 runs against the Mets from May 8-10, with the bullpen especially struggling. Pirates relievers combined to surrender 12 earned runs in seven innings on 18 hits. The relief corps allowed at least three runs in each outing.
- Snell has to be glad to see the calendar page turn to June after he finished May with an 0-3 record and a 7.50 ERA. He gave up at least three runs in each of his six starts in the month. Snell has been especially hurt by two-out hits all season. Of the 32 runs he’s allowed this year, 18 have come with two outs. Snell lost his May 10 start to the Mets — six innings, three earned runs, six hits and five strikeouts — a game in which Snell claimed New York was stealing the catcher’s signs.
- With Sunday’s loss, the Pirates fell to 1-21 this season when trailing after seven innings. … Pittsburgh has dropped four of its past five games. … The Pirates have just one win in 23 games when they are outhit by the opponent.

Kingman 26
6/1/2009-7:48pm at 7:48 pm (UTC -4)
Grave, you should have influenced people, as your thinking was on the right track…I will give you an excerpt of my thinking:
Players have to be rested, and had Saturday’s lineup been seen in a season without the ridiculous amount of injuries we have had, the criticism would be more valid. But this has been no normal season. Reyes, Delgado, and Church are on the DL, and Beltran was sick. Sheffield and Castillo have played a lot after injury-filled seasons, and we cannot afford to lose them. Wright had been striking out even more, and needed a day off. Instead of weakening the already-weakened lineup on more than one day, Jerry saw a matchup of Met-killer Johnson against Met-killer Redding (and in a day game after a night game) and decided to give it a shot with a makeshift lineup for one game rather than stagger the days off and further weaken the already weakened lineup on two or three days. I think this was a wise move.

Grave:
You know this is not comparable to Saturday. These were the best options for these positions tonight with Beltran ill (Valdez and Martinez are a wash) plus other than Beltran his next best hitters are all in the lineup whereas on Saturday Wright was sat against the opposing team’s pitcher for no urgent reason while the other good players were not available.
Kingman 26
6/1/2009-8:57pm at 8:57 pm (UTC -4)
Wanny–I ask most respectfully, do you think my reasoning on Jerry’s moves Saturday (which is right above) does not make some sense??
GravediggerHebner
6/1/2009-9:00pm at 9:00 pm (UTC -4)
It’s just that it was suggested that Wilson Valdez was “less likely” to get a big hit than Wright. Tonight, Valdez has two big hits, and Wright has an 0 for 3. Clearly Wright is more likely. But Valdez is not impossible, and it was you who gave up on the game by seeing his name in the lineup on Saturday, not Jerry Manuel and certainly not Wilson Valdez.
GravediggerHebner
6/1/2009-9:01pm at 9:01 pm (UTC -4)
Wright was sat because he had played every game so far, he was in a 3-15 slump including 8 strikeouts and had horrible numbers against the opposing pitchers. Those reasons are urgent enough for me.

guys just got this from mlbtr
Andrew Marchand of 1050 ESPN Radio spoke to Ben Sheets’ agent, Casey Close, who gave away very little about his client’s status. Close said he would make no comments about where Sheets might end up and “wouldn’t even say how Sheets is doing,” according to Marchand. Sheets had surgery in February to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow.
In the same article, Marchand writes that Sheets might be “a low-risk, high-reward option for the Mets.”
Jeff Wilson of the Dallas Morning News discussed Sheets in a Q&A on Friday. In response to a question about whether the Rangers would sign the injured star, Wilson urged readers that they should not “count on Sheets for a stretch run.”
Wilson points out that Rangers pitcher Jason Jennings had the same surgery twice, and “should serve as poster child for not rushing back from the injury.”
Sheets was last seen visiting the Rangers’ pitching coach Mike Maddux two weeks ago. As we await word on his status, which teams do you think should make a play for him? Do the Mets make sense?
anybody here take the risk on him? do we still have to give up draft picks?

It isn’t that he is overrated, he obviously is not the same after last year’s injury. In addition to losing a few mph, his command is nothing like what it was.
VERY disappointing and this will indeed be a nightmare loss.
But, if we can win the next 3, we will be OK, and we will have Johan and Pelf the next two nights.

HATE giving games like this away, given the end to the last two years.
If Putz is still injured, then effing DL him – plenty of company there. If he simply will never be the same, then pitch him as a situational RHP in the 6th and 7th, and give Parnell the 8th. We’re treating him based on reputation rather than results and that HAS to stop.

Agreed with every word.
I think that tonight was probably the end of JJ in the 8th and we will indeed see Parnell there.
Maybe JJ is reluctant to do more than have the cortisone shot he had a while ago? Who knows….I am afraid this may be as good as he is going to be at this point.

Putz is just not good its that simple. The reason why I say that with confidence is because when everyone was saying Putz is fine, leads the team in holds, etc I really felt he was garbage just by watching his stuff. Fastball has 0 movement unlike Maine and Pelfrey’s. its not 96 mph anymore and wsithout movement 93 is on a tea for major leaguers. what a shame. when is it time for Parnell to get the 8th. Obviously if we do that we might as well trade Putz. Hes not happy in the 8th, imagine him in the 7th or used sparingly.

Guys there is no doubt in my mind that Putz is injured. He was just blaming it on the 9th inning thing. His adrenaline should be just fine considering if he does not pitch well then he’s not getting much money next year. He needs to be shut down for 2 weeks and see what happens.

This is not what he was until his injury last year; not even close really.
Joe R
6/1/2009-10:21pm at 10:21 pm (UTC -4)
agreed. if hes not injured and just lost it somehow hopefully he pitches well for a couple of weeks so we could package him for a bat or pitcher. more importantly for this team and the bullpen he needs to get it together and throw 96 and be that lockdown 8th inning guy we were sold on!!!
Mr. Mets Butler
6/1/2009-10:22pm at 10:22 pm (UTC -4)
I agree because he was throwing high 90′s in the WBC. something is definitely wrong. And if that’s the casew, DL him. There is plenty of company there to keep him entertained. And I have a strange feeling Sheffield will be joining him soon.

I’m a little bit stunned right now. That certainly sucked. But I have to remind myself that a) getting 5 runs out of that lineup should have been enough (in other words, I can’t complain about the offense) b) we’ve been spoiled by the bullpen being so good (they will blow some games over the course of a season) and c) JJ certainly sucks right now (that’s self explanatory).

The fact that he didnt retire a batter is what pisses me off the most.

He looked weak on the mound.. His posture, or something. Just didn’t look like he wanted to be in there.

What makes it all worse is that adrenaline comment. It will never go away. He should have never said that. Not in Seattle anymore buddy….

On a side note, I have zero interest in listening to Kevin Burkhardt talk to Jack Wilson right now. Why the hell would I want to hear that?

Well, maybe the Philths can lose tonight. San Diego has been winning lately…

Putz is hurt. He was throwing 98mph in the WBC before the season. Now he is lucky if he hits 92mph. He is hurt and this team is again try to milk an injury, rather than put him on the DL. Pisses me off!

That’s why I think you bench him until this weekend, if he still can’t dial it up then send him to the DL retroactive.

If he is indeed injured is it the bone spur that is bothering him or is it something else? Is it an injury that can be cured by benching him until this weekend? The first step is determining what is wrong and right now it appears as if the Mets brain trust is not sure.

Jerry is on crack! He doesn’t see Putz has lost velocity on hi fastbally. He is either stoned or stupid!

JJ has been reduced to an 8th inning guy only in a favorable matchup. 7th,8th, and 9th hitters according to Manuel. How much are we paying this Putz?

Right now Green and Putz are reminiscent of last year’s bull-pen.

amen. right on. this needs to be addressed and answered by tomorrow. Putz needs to be honest for the team, get healthy and come back throwing 97. If hes not hurt god hekp us. either way he shouldnt pitch for a few days.

Guys..its a bad game…we have had been on the pirates side on many games like this. Putz has some issues and i hope they address it but thats all. We got Johan tomorrow!

Yes its a bad game but its the Putz factor that is troubling and needs to be fixed asap. Its a big deal…he has been bad and we need him…he is our 8th inning guy. its not the fact it was a blown big lead against the pirates, its Putz and his season thus far. Thats the story imo not the bad game.

Also the fact that a 1/4 into the season J.J has temporarily lost the 8th inning to Parnell is a big deal.

I think with bobbys emergance…the necessity diminishes a bit and it really works better for putz so they can find out whats wrong with him..

Of course its early but i guess u can say we are on pace for 24…not good considering Krod hasnt blown any. But its a bit ridiculous to add the season totals up a 1/4 of the way through lol Putz in his interview didnt mention anything that incinuated he wasnt healthy. Why isnt he throwing hard then..I almost hope he’s lying and is not 100%
