Game Thread: Mets (28-22) vs Pirates (23-28)

Record: 7-2 Era: 1.77 K: 86 BB: 20 WHIP: 1.09

Mets Notes:

  • Santana struggled at times Wednesday against Washington, walking six batters and throwing 120 pitches in just six innings. That was still enough to pick up his seventh win of the season, though, as he limited the damage to three runs on three hits. Santana faces a Pirates’ team he dominated in two starts last season, going 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA. He allowed just five hits and two runs while striking out 14 in 14 and 2/3 innings against Pittsburgh and tossed one of his three complete games of the season at PNC Park.
  • Sheffield said his malady is undiagnosed, but he did acknowledge it exists. And that’s more than he did last week, when manager Jerry Manuel mentioned it, describing Sheffield’s pain is an tightness behind his right knee, a problem, similar perhaps to what had Jose Reyes rehabbing in extended spring games. Sheffield said, almost defiantly, “No, no limitations. When I know I have to bust it, I make sure to be careful.”
  • Santana, the NL ERA leader, is looking to win his fourth straight start to become the league’s first eight-game winner. He has pitched at least six innings in nine of his 10 appearances this season.
  • Putz spent a ton of time studying video on a laptop computer with bullpen coach Randy Niemann and then catcher Brian Schneider after the game. He suggested this outing was different from recent struggles in that he was throwing strikes, whereas his previous outings he uncharacteristically was walking batters. Still, Schneider said Putz’s signature split-finger fastball was up in the zone rather than biting

Pirates Notes:

  • Duke deserved better than a no-decision in his last start, a seven-inning outing in which he allowed two runs. Duke’s efficiency continues to be great, as has his ability to avoid the big inning. In his 10 starts this season, Duke has finished at least seven innings in seven of them. He’s allowed two earned runs or fewer in seven starts as well. Duke is 2-1 with a 3.62 ERA in five career starts against New York. Not only is his confidence the highest it’s been in a long time, but the left-hander no longer is left wondering what pitches will be effective in each start.
  • In 10 starts this season, Duke’s 5-4 record has hidden his true dominance on the mound, as his 2.75 ERA ranks eighth in the National League and his 72 innings pitched ties him with the Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright for fourth. Although those numbers are All-Star friendly, Duke brushed off any thoughts about his chances, instead saying he focuses on what he can control.
  • Monday’s win was the Pirates’ second in six games and fourth in 11. Adam LaRoche is hitting .400 (8 for 20) with three doubles, four walks and five runs scored in his last six games.
  • Duke is 2-1 with a 3.62 ERA in five starts against the Mets. He yielded 11 runs – nine earned – over 12 innings in two starts against them last season.

Dirty–Sent you an email about the patch thread…thought it might be something you guys would want to know…

  4. fongy2

My two cents, Love the patch but
not so much the banner across the
    middle.

  5. gipperpdx

Razor Shines may be a good motivator /upbeat guy. But, Razor is a terrible 3rd base coach. How do you send Reed with the entire Pitt OF playing nearly on the IF for Castillo?

    1. Mr. Mets Butler

Yeah..he has made some bad decisions this year with sending runners. I’m not impressed either.

      1. bucknersankles

        Sammy Perlozzo come back.

  7. wannybackstra

Does Beltran have the Swine Flu?

    1. Mr. Mets Butler

No, according to the Mets doctors. But I don’t believe anything they report anymore, so who knows! Let’s hope not.

  8. GravediggerHebner

Had FMart made that catch I might have started to think we were going to see history tonight.

    1. Mr. Mets Butler

You should know better Hebner. We will never see a no-no in our lifetime.

      1. GravediggerHebner

Sadly I’m resigned to that. But had he made that catch, at least maybe they could’ve strung it out for 7 2/3 or something.

        1. Mr. Mets Butler

          lol

    2. Kingman 26

I was absolutely thinking the same thing; first Slappy and Wright’s real good plays, and had he caught that…

I have been waiting forever! I thought Glavine had it a few years ago against COL.

  9. metsfan4decades

Just finished Darling’s book, The Complete Game. He certainly knew what it took to have a game plan and pitch successfully. But it’s obvious to me you have to have talent too to go along with that – i.e. Johan. –As Ronnie wasn’t as successful as him even though he was a smart competitor.

Now if only Ollie would read that book…..

    1. GravediggerHebner

I read that Ollie was on the 15-day DL with illiteracy.

      J/K

    2. Kingman 26

Ollie is waiting for the book to come out on tape/CD….

      1. rustyjr

I think bee man from the simpsons should read the Spanish translation version of book on tape

        1. Mr. Mets Butler

I think it is on a Rosetta Stone CD if I am not mistaken.

          1. rustyjr

Instead of reading for dummies they renamed it reading for ollie

Whole bunch of “Real Dirty Met Jokes Of The Day” right here.

          3. metsfan4decades

Pool Ollie. I actually like him. He always has that confused look on his face….

          4. rustyjr

The ollie in the headlights look ? LOL

  10. dentulous

well good thing we got Valdez….RMart looks to join the long list

  11. fongy2

    The dif b/t todays “ace”pitchers
and those of 20/30 yrs ago is that
this buc lineup doesn’t touch a tom
    seaver or a steve carlton.

    1. fongy2

why am i suddenly getting the
feeling we’re gonna limp out of pittsburgh having been swept?

      1. GravediggerHebner

        Ye of little faith.

        1. fongy2

          yeah.
          thats me.

          1. GravediggerHebner

If you at least smiled for half a second when you read it then it was all worthwhile. The Mets have the 2-3-4 batters coming up in the 8th. If they don’t score then, I’ll join you in woe.

          2. rustyjr

As rodney d said ” my life is not a tale of woe – it’s a woe of tail LOL

          3. rustyjr

Hey fong have u even tried to slip back onto matts blog undetected ?

          4. fongy2

I have looked at the posts BUT no haven’t even attempted to log on.

      2. stickguy

because they can win tomorrow if Pelf is on (and something passing for offense shows p) but Redding is pitching Thrusday. SO, win tonight, or 1-3 looks likely.

  12. GravediggerHebner

I agree with GC. I’m surprised they took out Duke after 89 pitches. May that be the break the Metsies need.

    1. stickguy

But, that points out what is killing them with all the injuries. There really isn’t a “heart of the order” anymore. DW is swinging so bad now he would be benched on his HS team, Sheff is gimpy, and a 20 YO with ~20 ABs is the 2 hole hitter (and Tatis is 5).

Even Monday, it took Valdez and the scrubs to score any runs.

I don’t care if Beltran has the trots in CF, he needs to get back out there.

      1. dirtysanchez

agreed….if u got a 40 yr old thats playing on gimpy knees….u got to go out there n play

      2. fongy2

        Agreed stick!
        About ten yrs ago i
p.u.a parasite will in Barbados and lost 23lbs
        in about 2 weeks.
I missed 10 days of work. Bel-Tron,suckitup! this team is playing seriously undermanned.
Am I the only one who still thinks this guys a little soft?

  13. GravediggerHebner

OK that 8th inning was just pathetic. Grabow wiped ‘em out on 5 pitches. I’m with you now Fong.

    1. dirtysanchez

      very….

    2. fongy2

      Now I’m glad I didn’t go out
there for a couple days which
I almost did to visit my cousin and take in a gm..
This series has sweep written all over it..

  14. dirtysanchez

is this guy stupid or something….what if the mets tie the game? u just burnt ur two long men….

  15. bucknersankles

Feeling tired ……………… must try to ……………hold on, somebody…………….. please…………make………..it………………..stop.

  16. fongy2

Fellas still think we don’t need
    to add a quality bat???

    1. metsfan4decades

Are you kidding? The minute we signed that bat, he’d break a finger with the luck we’re having….

      1. metsgirl31

oh thanks for that…i needed that laugh…that was a good one.

  17. gland

Sigh. That was frustrating. But I suppose when you build your offense around a four man core of Reyes, Wright, Beltran and Delgado, and (lets say you can sub Sheffield for Delgado) two of those guys are out, this is what you get.

If we could have Reyes and Beltran back and healthy that would certainly change things a bit.

    1. dirtysanchez

well they are both due back soon…

      1. gland

        the sooner the better!

It’s hard for me to get upset when I look at what they’re putting out there.

  18. QnsNative718

Was this game seriously only 2 hours long?

    1. gland

That’s what no offense will get you!

      1. QnsNative718

No Beltran. No Reyes. No Delgado. Then again, I cant be sick to my stomach by this game. Way to go, Ramon Martinez for getting that lone run!!! And hooray Jeremy Reed for your 3 hit performance!!!

        1. Mr. Mets Butler

          and no D-Wright.

  19. QnsNative718

Ugh.. Im so gland I decided to be kind to myself and read instead of watch the game.

    1. QnsNative718

      *glad

      1. gland

You’ve got gland on the brain! I do that to people… :)

        1. QnsNative718

          lol..

  20. Joe R

Omar will trade for a bat sooner than later imo. Dont think we can afford to wait. after this set, which we can easily lose 3 of 4, we have the Nats and then the schedule heats up. We all know the Nats have a very good offense and pitching is their weakness. Realistically are we the favorites to win that series with the offense we have?? Idk I would say its a toss up. Yanks, Phils, etc coming up. Can we afford to fall 6-7 or even 8 games behind? this isnt crazy panic talk either. It is very possible we can find ourselves in a hole. We cant expect Wright and Beltran to be hot 24/7. Sheff is helping a ton but for how long? A bat is needed however u slice it imo.

  21. Joe R

Oh and cAstillo sucks!! Sorry guys never liked him and his slappy weak at bats. A real joke. Yeah Morgan made a great catch last night but um…lets see…he was playing practically a deep shortstop. Morgan plays deeper against some pitchers!! I will never forgive Omar for not manning up, admitting he made a huge mistake, eat his contract and move on with Hudson! Anyway lets hope Pelf continues his great pitching. Oh and while Im at it Wright has been pretty bad thus far minus a ridiculously hot 2 week span. That leaves us with one player from the offense that has been solid on a consistent basis this year…Beltran…ouch…yes we need a bat
