“Everything was coming out of my hand good. They were like three-hoppers up the middle,” Putz said about the hits. “Tip your hat on those. They were just hit in the right spot. I was pounding the strike zone with my pitches.”

Above all else, this is the excuse used by pitchers that irks me the most. No one, least of all the fans, cares how it felt leaving your hand or that you threw strikes (heavan forbid you are able to consistenly throw stikes as a proven Major Leaguer). Bit of advice JJ, stop clowing around and being such a great “clubhous presence” who “lightens the mood” and do us all a favor and take a page out of the rookie Parnell’s book and get some outs.

He needs to man up and admit that the bone spur is hurting him and causing his change in mechanics. Get the surgery, JJ!!

Agreed. If he’s hurt, then he’s hurt and shoudn’t be out there. You only get point for gutting it out if you are still able to produce and help the team win. If you can’t do that and you are a detriment to the team, then you are being selfish and should grab some pine.

I will be extremely disappointed if we dont hear news today that he is on the DL or that he is getting some type of treatment. If this is just the way he is now i.e, throwing 92-94 we might as well package him up. Teams will take him as a closer. His fastball has zero movement unlike Maine and Big Pelf. His breaking pitches havent been as devasting as we were sold either. He obviuosly won’t have the adrenaline in the 6th or 7th if he cant muster it up in the 8th. What a shame but thank god for parnell. Hopefully he continues his success and teams dont start touching him up the second time around the league. I dont think this will be the case because his fastball is hitting 95 and his breaking pitches stay low in the strike zone. What a well needed pleasant surprise thus far. Hopefully Putz gets it together though because he is extremely needed in our pen!!

My question is that if he can’t be a Mets setup guy why are teams going to take him as their closer? You don’t think they buy that adrenaline speech?

The ball might have come out of his hand well but it somehow went awry from that point on. Most of his pitches were up in the strike zone at 92 mph that it is not going to cut it.

i really wish they’d shut him down or something…i can’t believe that nothing is wrong w/ the guy

Most amazing thing I’ve seen today is the old Expos logo behind the Nationals on today’s scoreboard. :-)

    Re: Putz

He talks about the 4-hoppers going up the middle. How about the rocket that D-Wright saved him on in Boston? Can’t complain about 35 hoppers, when there are plenty of rockets hit right at people. It all evens out during the course of a season.

Funny thing is, Putz pitched those two great innings in that first series in Philly. I think it’s as mucha mental thing as it is physical. But I agree. I’d shut him down for a few days. Don’t use him unless absolutely necessary.

Whats up guys? I just signed up for the sight the other day and I must say, kudos to you guys for the impressive amount of work in a short amount of time! Not sure if you guys remember conversing with me at metsblog (I didnt have a whole ton of posts) but I always looked forward to your opinions and insight on the various topics.

Keep up the good work, I look forward to continuing discussions, and neglecting work!

the issues he is having (no control, no sinker or breaking ball, lack of velocity) scream of an arm (elbow) injury that he is trying to pitch through. And if it isn’t working, get it fixed. Try the 15 days of rest/rehab, and if not cured, bite the bullet and do a procedure. Hopefully he can make it back before the end of the year.

Hard to say trade him. If he is damaged, willl a team want him? And if he isn’t, what the heck is wrong?

I suppose if a doc signs off that it isn’t an injury, and a team desperate for a closer wants to pay like it is mental, then sure you can trade him. Just taking a big risk. And there doesn’t seem to be an obvious replacement in house, unless they go radical and call up someone like Rustich from the lower levels.

    1. There's Always '10

Maybe Putz is just having a bad stretch. Maybe he can’t pitch every day. I’d try to limit his innings until the meat of the schedule comes up. See what that does for him.

    Re: Putz

I see him getting one more shot and if he blows chunks like Maine on Sunday, he’ll hit the DL or get shutdown for a while.

  9. trs86

At this point, IF he is healthy then we have a Lidge in Houston situation and are not getting much in return. Putz for DeRossa will be about as good as it gets.
