Post Game: Pittsburgh Pirates 3, New York Mets 1

"You hit a double too? Gimme some skin bro!"

"You hit a double too? Gimme some skin bro!"

Nate McLouth and Adam LaRoche hit back-to-back (and belly-to-belly) RBI doubles in the 6th inning, breaking a 1-1 tie and giving the Pirates all the offense they would need to scuttle the Mets.  Pirate starter Zach Duke allowed only 1 run, scattering 8 hits over 7 innings, and John Grabow followed by Matt Dicus Capps (his real middle name) defied their terrible ERAs and WHIPs to close out the Mets.

"It hurts a bit, but I'll be alright."

"It hurts a bit, but I'll be alright."

The litany of Met injuries continued.  Tonight’s incident occurred when SS Ramon Martinez scored the Mets only run of the game in the top of the 5th.  In the 3rd inning, Luis Castillo didn’t hit one quite deep enough and Jeremy Reed was thrown out at the plate attempting to score.  In the 5th, with one out and runners on 2nd & 3rd, Castillo actually hit a fly ball deep enough to score a run.  Martinez tagged up and sped home, for some reason choosing to slide head first.  He landed awkwardly and dislocated the pinky finger of his left hand.  He was replaced by Wilson Valdez.

Young Jeremy

Young Jeremy

There were a few highlights in the loss for the Mets.  Jeremy Reed entered the game batting 1.000 versus left handed pitchers, and went 3 for 3 off of Duke to leave the game batting 1.000 versus left handed pitchers.  Maligned reliever Sean Green retired all 4 batters he faced in his 1 1/3 innings of work.  Met starter Johan Santana was not his normal stellar self, but he did notch his 9th quality start in 11 attempts this season.  Perhaps the best thing about tonight’s game from a Met fan perspective was that it only took 2 hours and 11 minutes to play.

      And as the Phillies con’t
      to roll,bombing Jake Peavy..
      the whispers get louder that
      Carlos Beltran may indeed have
      the Swine-Flu.

      1. Joe R

haha seriously doesnt a stomach flu last 48 hrs at most!!! What the hell

      2. Mr North Jersey

        Swine-Flu really?

  2. Joe R

figured i’d post this here too lol

Omar will trade for a bat sooner than later imo. Dont think we can afford to wait. after this set, which we can easily lose 3 of 4, we have the Nats and then the schedule heats up. We all know the Nats have a very good offense and pitching is their weakness. Realistically are we the favorites to win that series with the offense we have?? Idk I would say its a toss up. Yanks, Phils, etc coming up. Can we afford to fall 6-7 or even 8 games behind? this isnt crazy panic talk either. It is very possible we can find ourselves in a hole. We cant expect Wright and Beltran to be hot 24/7. Sheff is helping a ton but for how long? A bat is needed however u slice it imo

Oh and cAstillo sucks!! Sorry guys never liked him and his slappy weak at bats. A real joke. Yeah Morgan made a great catch last night but um…lets see…he was playing practically a deep shortstop. Morgan plays deeper against some pitchers!! I will never forgive Omar for not manning up, admitting he made a huge mistake, eat his contract and move on with Hudson! Anyway lets hope Pelf continues his great pitching. Oh and while Im at it Wright has been pretty bad thus far minus a ridiculously hot 2 week span. That leaves us with one player from the offense that has been solid on a consistent basis this year…Beltran…ouch…yes we need a bat

Joe, it takes 2 GMs to tango. And it is still pretty early for significant trades to happen.

SO, unless you want to bend over and have your hair hit the floor, you aren’t getting anyone significant (that would be a real upgrade to the offense) without paying dearly, and the Mets don’t have that many prospects to spare.

basically, you just try to stay afloat when decimated this much by injuries. And the big bats that Omar will be getting? Reyes, Beltran, and Church mostly, when he activates them off the DL!

Once the roster stabalizes, you can worry about trying to find another bat (closer to the deadline) to upgrade. Probably needs to be an OF bat, since IMO sheff won’t make it to the ASB in one piece.

    1. Joe R

Reyes and Church big bats?? Reyes of course is missed. Church?…who knows

It may be a bit early but deals could still be made.

      1. fongy2

        Agreed. Ryan Church is
        a platoon/4th OFer when
right and he ain’t been that since this time last year.

        1. Joe R

yup. A bat is needed even when we get healthy. Its been needed for 3 years. We havent added anything in that department in how long??…pretty ridiculous.

  5. stickguy

    swine flu sounds about right.

Remember, this is the Mets we are talking about! Is there any other team that could possibly get a case of it?

  6. fongy2

Watching the Phillie game and Peavy
was pulled after the 1st inning.
heading to the 3rd and still no explanation from broadcasters
“Wheels’ and our old friend McCarthy!

        Yeah,Phil’casters just
        mentioned it.

      2. Joe R

        Thanks for the help Peavy.

  7. saltygary

On another note can’t you all just move on and not do a QA with Cerrone. You have a good thing going eff that guy. He’s just going to feed PR BS.

    1. fongy2

      Agreed!

Uggla who is struggling this year by all accounts….10 HR’s lol….ugh

  9. Joe R

Ibanez another 2 run shot!! 6 to 0

So most likely 2 1/2 out.

    1. fongy2

      And sinking!

    2. GravediggerHebner

Well, who are the Phillies missing? Brett Myers? JC Romero? Anyone else? To be within 2 1/2 games of them without Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, his replacement Alex Cora, Carlos Beltran, and 40 yo Sheffield limping around is damned impressive.

      1. Joe R

yes it is impressive but i dont want an over abieving tea, that finishes 2 out at the end of the year. its 2 1/2 now with a tough schedule coming up. Poor Johan we give Livan 5 runs. Sayinh he should have 9 wins may be cutting him short. Unbelievable. 20 wins should be a given. Its a shame strictly from a stat point of view. As a player u dont get that many chances to gave 22,23 wins in a season. He should have had it last year and this year already 3-4 games blown ugh

        1. GravediggerHebner

That’s fair. Different people will tolerate different things. Personally I can’t worry about Santana’s win total in the first week of June. But you’re doing so isn’t wrong.

I can’t enjoy a baseball season if after a particular mid-season loss I immediately think “what if they finish 1 game out.” If that unfortunately happens, I’ll have all winter to look back on it and lament. I just can’t do it at this stage.

          1. gipperpdx

I honestly don’t know how to avoid thinking “what if this is that one game they finish out by” after any loss at any point this season. How can I not, given the last two years?

honestly i love the pics and captions on this site.

        Superb job!

not too be negative but the more I think about the more its really not as impressive as it may seem. Yes SF was good, LA not, Boston Yes with a bit of luck but hey it counts and i will take it. An impressive homestand against pretty bad competition. Yes u still have to earn the W. That takes us to Pitt where we lost 2. Yes guess it could be a bit worse maybe 4 out but the schedule heats up now. I would say it would be impressive if we keep it up through the month. If at the end of June we are only 2 1/2 out I will be jumping with joy! That will be impressive. Lets pray we hold on til we figure things out and get semi healthy with hopefully a new bat sprinkled in. All I am saying is and once again not being negative we could easily be climbing out of a big hole shortly and thats not a knock against the team..just the circumstances and cards we have been dealt
