Post Game: Pittsburgh Pirates 11, New York Mets 6

Grim indeed

Grim indeed

Great American pundit and everyman Homer Simpson once said, “I’ve learned that life is one crushing defeat after another until you just wish Flanders was dead.”  Perhaps Homer was a Met fan.

The Pittsburgh Pirates completed a 3 game sweep of the New York Mets this afternoon, scoring 4 runs in the 1st inning off of starter Mike Pelfrey on a pair of 2 run singles by Andy LaRoche and Jason Jaramillo on their way to an 11-6 victory.  The Mets tried to inch back, scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st, but never tied or lead the game, and eventually the post-Nate McLouth era Pirate offense pulled away.

McCutchen Fever

McCutchen Fever

Andrew McCutchen, the prospect recalled from the minor leagues by Pittsburgh to take over centerfield with the trade of Nate McLouth to the Atlanta Braves got things started quickly.  He singled to lead off the bottom of the 1st and eventually scored the first of the Pirates 11 runs.  He finished the game with 3 runs scored on 2 hits and a walk.  Most of Pittsburgh’s offense came at the expense of Pelfrey, who allowed 9 runs, 8 earned, in 3 2/3 innings pitched.  Pelfrey (4-2) took the loss.

Pirate yellow apron?

Pirate yellow apron?

Whatever Pelfrey served up, the Pirates enjoyed it.  The 9 runs allowed were the most by Pelfrey this season, and the 3 2/3 innings pitched marked his shortest outing of the season.  The Pirates final 2 runs were allowed by J.J. Putz in the 7th inning.

Before and after Beltran

Before and after Beltran

One bright spot for the Mets was the return to the lineup of Carlos Beltran.  A severe stomach virus had kept Beltran off the field since he exited a game early on May 30th.  He reported some minor weight loss.  Beltran doubled and homered in his return.  David Wright and Fernando Martinez also had 2 hits each for the Mets.  Also encouraging was the work of reliever Sean Green who threw 2 scoreless innings without allowing a baserunner.

Yummy wounds

Yummy wounds

The Mets lick their wounds and head to Washington, D.C. for a weekend 3 game series with the Nationals.  Ex-National Tim Redding opens the series on the mound for Mets, so team confidence must be high.

I lost my internet this afternoon for 3 hours. Lucky this is here at all.

I apologize, that sounds harsh when I read it and that’s not my intention. I just had a lot of problems this afternoon, including my dog running away and my internet connection being lost from 2:00-5:15pm. I wasn’t able to watch the game and I was scrambling to try and get my internet fixed and my dog back. Considering all that I’m quite proud of my work.

Wow!! Glad u got dog back most importantly.

Grave, sorry to hear about your troubles today buddy….very glad to hear your dog is back. My bro and I run an internet biz, and when the internet is down for more than about 15 minutes, my head starts to slowly explode, if that is possible.

I think your posts are fantastic, and as I have said before, the graphics are really superb. They truly add to your posts and to the site overall.

Hope you have a less eventful and very relaxing evening, and may your dog bless you by walking in front of the TV if ESPN is on and showing lowlights from this afternoon….

I guess the only 2 questions we as Met fans have to ask and debate is. Do we really think murphy and Sheffield can pick up the slack for a month or so til better bargains are out there? Is it alot to ask a 40 year old who was cut with many millions left on contract. He is contributing but is diminshing returns coming? Is it too much to ask and too much pressure to ask Murphy to deliver on a day in and day out basis? Finally with this upcoming schedule can we wait a month to make a deal or do we need a big bat by like wednesday? Idk the answers but I am leaning towards sooner than later. As far as what it will take to get and if players like Holliday,Dunn, Huff, Berkman, Martinez, etc are even available I don’t know. It’s not time to panic but let’s say it’s 4 back after tonight is 9-10 back cause to panic? If it is I think a trade has to be made soon because with this schedule all I am saying is it is a possibility.

To quote a dumb mets fan ” Ooooh the pain”!!!! Btw guys ” Rocky” emailed me back and we are on for the interview – also My dad will be signing his new book on June 24th at citi so I’ll try to get a picture of us taken

    1. CaseStreet

can’t you just go over to your dad’s house and get a picture w/ him jr?

      1. Kingman 26

        LOL!

    2. Kingman 26

Haven’t picked up Dad’s book yet, but checked it out at barnes and Noble, and it did look pretty damn good….he certainly was honest about Dave Kingman’s disposition!

      1. rustyjr

LOL well I don’t know if ” dad” was kongs kind off guy

        1. Kingman 26

Ha! I don’t think Kong was ANYONE’s kind of guy, except maybe a few 10 year old kids searching for heroes on really bad Met teams!!

          1. rustyjr

Yeah mine was kong max stearns and andy hassler – ha I said hassler !! Take that Matt C !!! LOL

          2. Kingman 26

            Heheheh, he said Hassler!

            Griffey! Cheesesteak! Management!

I remember thinking it was a REALLY big deal when Doug Flynn won a Gold Glove in 1980.

Damn, those days do make today’s problems seem a tiny bit less horrific….

          3. rustyjr

U know what – u r right – especially when jerry morales is our big of bat LOL

I’m not an expert on the economics of baseball and trades, etc but let’s just say the Nationals trade Dunn for prospects. This may be a stupid question but the contract obviously is 100% picked up by his new team right? I ask because if this is the case couldn’t a team like us that has a below average farm system sign players like Dunn, Hudson, etc with the economy being so bad for cheap this past off season and trade them ? I’m looking at it from an investment point of view. Might be a totally ridiculous statement on my part but that would have been a way to build the farm system fast. It came to mind because if they trade Dunn the Nationals just picked up prospects for basically free.

    1. CaseStreet

the team that signed the player does pay him until he gets traded. The new team doesn’t pickup the entire contract, only what’s left.

Plus, that’s very risky. Suppose you picked up a certain pitcher for $12M so you could trade him, and oops.. his knee hurts and forgot how to pitch, you’re not getting any prospects for that guy, yet still have to pay him.

Finally, you could build your farm this way, but ur basically saying this and the next few seasons are a wash. The Mets arent’ at that point being 1 game away from the playoffs the past two seasons.

BTW, Oakland is doing what ur saying w/ Holliday, but they can because the division is weak and their fans don’t expect much, and they always have a deep farm.
