just saw that via Chris Carlin on twitter..was gonna post myself…

8-10 weeks..so were lookin at august…. so Putz + Wags in August?

    1. trs86

I guess. The news keeps getting better.

      1. Mr. Mets Butler

BTW… thanks for the ‘brownie points’ TRS, but Hebner also reported it same time as me in the other Putz thread. Actually a minute earlier…lol

        1. trs86

Yeah but I did not read his first. LOL.

        2. GravediggerHebner

But I “work” here. We want to encourage our readers to bring relevant info to the table, so thank you for that and your humility.

          1. Mr. Mets Butler

            lol…give him a raise Trs

          2. trs86

LOL, not sure if I am the one that should be giving him that.

  2. trs86

Well speaking of stop gaps what about John Rauch as a salary dump. He was good before and went to Arizona and stunk. They don’t need him and he could give us another 7th inning power arm.

  3. DNDJohan aka kistics

Omar is supposed to address the media at 4. We’ll see what he has to say…

    1. dirtysanchez

a bunch of crap and a few “ya know what im saying” mixed in here and there

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

yeah probably… no major trade acquisitions or anything like that…

    2. saltygary

      “I’m not worried”!!!!

    3. Mr. Mets Butler

He will only say after announcing Putz’s surgery that he thinks we can get by with the players we have. ‘Smokescreen and mirrors’, ‘cloak and dagger’ as usual with this guy.

    4. trs86

DND where did you hear about the conference?

  4. dirtysanchez

    well…
    delgado out till asb
    reyes out till asb
    putz out till after asb
    lol is that right

  5. CaseStreet

Was FATSO giggling like a school girl?

.500 ball till August and then WE TAKE NO PRISONERS!

  6. smooth

We all saw that coming. See you in late August Putz! Dont come back as a bum please. Also Omar to adress the media at Citi @ 4pm, probably news on putz and reyes. This is turning into a nightmare of a season, the only that can bring some light would be a trade for an impact player, not a low key patch up player. I was thinking that a package of Church/Niese/Flores is arguably just as good if not better than the package the pirates got for McClouth, so we should be able to get a player via trade

  7. dirtysanchez

so…i guess the question being…who do we call up when putz goes on the DL

    1. trs86

Elmer friggin Dessens. Before you laugh, take a look at his numbers.

    2. GravediggerHebner

      Elmer (The Glue) Dessens

      1. trs86

        I was thinking the Fudd

        1. GravediggerHebner

Having seen him, if we agree to pronounce it like “Food” I’m with you.

    3. Mr. Mets Butler

I think Figgy deserves a spot in the bullpen. He could also serve as a spot starter in case of injury and/or if Redding continues to throw trash.

      1. trs86

Honestly, Fudd is pitching better and is a pitching as a reliever. Keep Figgy as the spot starter.

        1. Mr. Mets Butler

Yeah but Elmer Fudd will probably trip over a pesky rabbit on the field and get hurt.

    4. CaseStreet

Time to get Figgy w/ it?

      How about B. Knight?

  8. DNDJohan aka kistics

Did Beltran erupted with the media last night?

    1. saltygary

Hes taking charge which is a good thing.

    2. dirtysanchez

well he erupted to the media about the team yesterday yes

      1. trs86

What did he say and can we get a post on it?

        1. dirtysanchez

lol i think you posted it…no mattR did…about the team should be embarassed and take it personally.

          1. dirtysanchez

if you want me to ill find it and repost the quotes here.

          2. trs86

Oh yeah, wasn’t that posted yesterday about him being embarrassed?

          3. GravediggerHebner

Now I feel a little better about my “who’s Matt Wilson” question.

          4. dirtysanchez

            yea matty posted it.

          5. mrose

            matty?? lol

          6. dirtysanchez

lol i unofficially nick named you matty lol

      2. DNDJohan aka kistics

what did he say? was he yelling and dropping f-bombs? or just frustrated?

        1. dirtysanchez

lol fustrated short of dropping fbombs lol

        2. saltygary

“The reality of this is, coming here to Pittsburgh and being swept, personally I feel embarrassed; I don’t think it’s fun,” Beltran said.

He added: “Three games to this team. I know they’re a big-league ball club, but we’re better than them. We’re better than them. We know we’re better than them, but we have to do something about it.”

  9. saltygary

On another note one of the gripes that I had with Mattsblag is his bs fan confidence rating Whenever the readers posted results that would skew below 50% he would either not change the graph or set it to 50%. Below is the current results. Now from the numbers I would say it’s below 50%. Any bets on what the smug guy does? It’s at 56% right now I’m gonna saw he’ll move it down to 52%.

we are so not going to do that crap here. I hated that too as it felt when the team is at its worst was when he would release the poll

      1. trs86

        Or when at it’s best.

      2. saltygary

No Doubt. If I see one fan confidence rating here I’m outsky.

btw all of my comments on metsblog have been awaiting moderation for 2 weeks now, i wonder when Matt will actaully get around to the accumulating comments from users awaiting his “approval”. Seriously why should i continue to post comments if they wont get approved till a month later

      1. charlies

i don’t even bother…i don’t audition to share my comments with fellow mets fans.

        1. metsfan4decades

I’m with you. I’m way past the point in my life of auditioning for anything – LOL.

  11. Mr. Mets Butler

We have injuries galore and the Pope is talking horse racing on the FAN.

    1. trs86

We do need a few horses. Some of ours need to be put down.

      1. There's Always '49

        Mine that Marlon Byrd

    2. GravediggerHebner

To be fair to Mike, he opened his show on the Mets and he is doing a remote from Belmont Park.

  12. DNDJohan aka kistics

Mets Medical staff should be fired. ALL OF YOU!!

  13. trs86

Seriously guys take a look at Elmer the fudd glue Dessens stats.
    http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Elmer%20Dessens&pos=P&sid=t422&t=p_pbp&pid=113296

    1. GravediggerHebner

He’s 38 years old with over 1,000 innings of ML experience. I would hope he could toy with a combination of minor leaguers and AAAA types. Check out these major league numbers:

      http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/desseel01.shtml

      1. trs86

Grave, we know his major league numbers stink. But fact is he is getting the job done in the minors and deserves a shot. Those are not wimpy numbers even for a 38 year old in AAA. His WHIP is .81. At least we know he throws strikes.

        1. GravediggerHebner

Well I think the 18 century cannon that is Elmer Dessens might do well this weekend against the Nats, but I shudder at the thought of him coming in from the pen against the Phils or Yanks. Strikes become “it is high, it is far, it is gone” pretty quick against them.

          1. trs86

Well ideally he would take the Stokes role and Stokes would take the 7th inning.

          2. trs86

And maybe he’s on the roids but he has given up 1 HR in 28 innings this season.

          3. gategem

lol OTOH perhaps there is someone pitching well in the Mexican League that can help us.

    2. tkfj

It’s obviously the most intelligent call-up seeing he is the best relief pitcher in AAA, but I have trouble trusting Omar to make the right move. IMO we will be looking at Figgy or someone else, not necessarily bad but you can’t ignore Dessens stats.

  14. tkfj

Really not surprising and not a big loss, IMO. Honestly Putz was just hurting the team by concealing his injury and not doing anything about it. Anyone we fill his void with will be an upgrade, and losing a BP prescence isnt nearly as bad as losing an everyday player.

  15. stickguy

I’ll go with the positive spin. Getting Wags and Putz back by say mid-August for the stretch run could be huge.

Alost as big as getting Ayayla last year!

    1. darknova306

That only matters if we’re anywhere close to striking distance at that time. If we’re 12-15 GB, this won’t make a difference.

  16. trs86

Anyone know if someone is carrying the Omar conference today?

    1. tkfj

Not going to learn anything new, just more GM speak. “We trust our guys…..”. Sound like Willie Randolph.

    2. DNDJohan aka kistics

Kevin Burkhardt has said on his twitter that it’s an informal thing and not televised…

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

I bet you that he will say “At this point, we are listening to great opportunities, but we also trust our guys to step up and play well”.

        Same cliche B.S.

        1. tkfj

Same Cliche B.S. that made us tired of Willie…..

      2. trs86

No radio either? So just the Putz decision I am guessing then.

        1. DNDJohan aka kistics

yeah.. and some information on Jose Reyes

  17. stickguy

Good that he is getting it done. If they can stay in the race until say mid-august, thee is the real possibility that they get to add Putz and Wagner as stretch run help to the pen.

No guarantees they get the old stuff back, but man, what a help if they do!

Hoepfully by august they have Delgado and Reyes back too. Again, no guarantee as to how they perform, but they could pretty much have the A team in place for the last 50-60 games.

As long as they don’t fall too far beind (don’t forget the WC too) through July, they should have the horses for a nice run down the homestretch.

    1. trs86

That’s why I think you have to at LEAST go get some stop gaps OR get a true LF or RF.

  18. DNDJohan aka kistics

Guys, little more news on Reyes…

    http://stations.espn.go.com/stations/1050espnradio/blog?id=3480300

My dad actually got this done for his elbow last week and the doctor said he needs good 2 months recovery time… granted he’s 60 and Reyes is 25, but I doubt Reyes makes it back before the All Star break…

    1. Joe R

Jesus what is that!! This sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Great use our star shortstop as a guinea pig!! Awesome!

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Apparently a lot of athletes have gotten this procedure done. So, I’m assuming this is not a trial on Reyes. But it still takes time to heal.

  19. smooth

Braves are going for it this season. Heres the latest report they are eyeing Brad Penny

    OMAR GET TO WORK!!

    1. trs86

I am not sure how another starter helps them unless Takashiiiiiiiii goes to the pen. Their starters are fine.

      1. There's Always '49

        Kawakami?

  20. Joe R

I need a game tonight and a win with a Philly loss to gain my sanity. Please rain stop. Beltran lead the way and Philly take a day off if you care for me!

    1. darknova306

Don’t wanna be a buzz-kill for you, and I fully second your comment, but Redding pitches tonight. I have a feeling this all but an assured loss. Hopefully getting shelled by the Nats will get him out of here.

  21. gipperpdx

    It’s 1987 redux!

    1. Kingman 26

Yes and no…then, it was all the pitchers, and the pitchers were the key to the 1986 team….our pitchers may also be the key, and other than Ollie and JJ, we still have everyone….well, as of my writing this sentence…no word on if Pelf or Parnell may have slipped and cracked four vertebrae getting off the damn bus in DC….

      1. metsfan4decades

And that’s why I think we should be doing a deal for another starter. Our starting pitching depth right now is extremely shaky….

        1. Kingman 26

Me too….I would love another bat as well, but if we could somehow find someone to slot between Johan and Pelf, or even a real number 3 or 4, and we do not suffer any more injuries, we may actually survive…

  22. There's Always '27

So much for the trade bait tandem of Putz and Murph.

    1. Joe R

Thats true but if this is really whats causing Putz to lose 5 mph off his fastball then hopefully it comes back. Stupid organization should have had him get the surgery a few weeks ago.

      1. dirtysanchez

agreed…they wait till the absolute last minute..bone spurs are something i dont think you can just “play through”…as maine found out last year when he was bad…

        1. gategem

Is it true he the problem last year?

          1. gategem

            left out “had”

          2. gategem

I see where Kingman actually answered my question in the next post. Sorry for posing something that was already addressed.

      2. Kingman 26

Agreed 100% and more. Everyone knew he had a bone spur and past injuries, and they let it go on this long.

Last year he came back and was really, really good….that may very well happen this year too.

After surgery, rest, and rehab, he may be hitting 97 and with better command for the stretch run.

KRod, Parnell, and JJ and Wagner? That would be nice….

        1. There's Always '49

KRod, Parnell, and JJ – OH MY!

        2. gategem

It will take time to build back the arm strength so I wouldn’t depend on him. I think it best not to worry about the players that are not here and concentrate on getting the best from the players that are. This is what we go to war with and there is a long season yet to play.

      3. There's Always '49

Putz has drawn up every excuse in the book as to why he isn’t effective. He has already used:

-I can’t get as amped for the 8th inning
-My mechanics are all off; it’s not my arm
-I’m totally starting to feel it. I hold back a little bit so it doesn’t hurt

        Next up:
        -My dog ate my arm
-I had a dream about midgets and they scare me
        -I’m really a lefty

        1. dirtysanchez

dont forget about the neck issue he had.

          1. There's Always '49

            That’s right:

“i took a viagara and it caused a stiff neck when it got caught in my throat”

          2. tkfj

Erm… I totally interpreted that the wrong way the first time I read it.

          3. There's Always '49

yup…left myself wide open on that one. no pun intended of course.

it’s another putz excuse. this guy has more excuses than we have DL players.

        2. Kingman 26

We are up to 2049?? LOL!!

In his defense, what was he supposed to say? The team CLEARLY knew he was hurt, and did not disable him. His velocity and command are not what they were and his Ks are almost half of what they have been.

Was he supposed to go out and say that to the media “Well, I am hurt, and they want me to keep pitching.”

Was he supposed to just take himself out of games and be labeled as soft and grit/heart/nut–less?

This situation really, really sux, and it seems as though JJ was trying to tough it out, when he probably should have been disabled sometime between the WBC and a few weeks ago.

          1. There's Always '49

That’s fine. Mechanical flaw is acceptable. Saying you can’t mentally prepare for the 8th inning is not. Well, maybe it is, until you start getting lit up like a christmas tree out there. Then you should start taking it seriously because who wants a closer that can’t even shut the door in the 8th inning?

          2. Kingman 26

I completely agree….I was just suggesting that maybe the excuses he made were not even true—-he had to say something as to why he has been sucking up the place after what we expected, and he knew he had a bone spur, and the team at least SHOULD have noticed his lack of command, loss of velocity, and like 40% drop in Ks, but they did not do anything.

Sorry to harp on it, but there is something wrong with our training/medical staff.

Yes, I know they are all highly regarded, etc, but this type of thing happens too often in my opinion. Church last year, Jose maybe aggravating his hamstring by playing with the original injury, JJ pitching hurt until he basically cannot get an out, and maybe Ollie even was pitching hurt before they sent him down, etc., etc., etc….

  23. There's Always '49

We trust Emil Brown, who has a great track record in the big leagues, youknowwhatimsayin?

    1. tkfj

  26. wannybackstra

I know it won’t happen (yet) and may not be a good idea in the long-term but an interesting idea (to me) would be to bring Brad Holt up to throw some of his mid nineties heat for an inning at a time, a la Joba.

    1. stickguy

I mentioned that a few times. GOt roundly beat up for it, but he did just get moved up to AA, and has been looking good.

      Still not likely to happen.

    2. metsfan4decades

Well, it we’re so far out of it come the ASB, it might be the only thing that brings people to the games. In the bad days, that was the only reason to be watching Met baseball. We knew we were out of it almost before it started, and some years by ASB, so if it’s your team, you watched to see how the young ones were doing, or to see one brilliant pitching performance amongst many bad, or one break out night for a batter or two, or one great play.

And sometimes, I watched to see how many more ways they could invent to lose games.

I sincerely hope though we’re treading water come August and when all are back and healthy we can get right back in it. I’m not giving up yet…

      1. stickguy

This year should be different. Even if it gets to be say 8/10, and they are 8 games out of the WC, you can still expect/hope/not be surprised if they make a run.

In the bad old days, there was no talent coming to help. This year, there just might be reinforcements coming.

Even without Reyes, if Beltran is helthy and CHurch coes back (hopefully effective), they stil lhave a pretty good team overall.

  27. GravediggerHebner

Off-topic, but wow this Sci-Fi channel marathon of Land of the Lost is captivating. Forgot all about Richard Kiel.

Ah, the BEST place to drink the Kool-Aid!!

      1. There's Always '49

        That’s so wrong haha.

I just watched a special on that last night. It all went down about 10 days before I was born. That’s some messed up ish. Injecting infants with poison. Horrible.

        1. Kingman 26

Yeah, I remember that as a kid…absolutely horrible, no doubt.

But, you threw that softball up there, and I just had to swing away!

  29. GravediggerHebner

Nieve. Isn’t he in Elvis Costello’s band?

  30. GravediggerHebner

These Met roster moves are giving me the dry Nieves.

    1. There's Always '49

      Wil Nieves?
