Good morning my friends it’s time the HELP IM STUCK IN PA. SURROUNDED BY THE ENEMY !!! EDITION OF ‘this date in Mets infamy with Rusty” So enjoy these factoids while I plot my escape.

First off birthday salutations go out to one of the few not so horrible pitchers of the early mets era Carl ” super genius” Willey (1931)
our first great shortstop and mediocre manager Bud Harrelson (1944)
newly aquired outfield reserve David “Mary had a little ” Lamb (1975)

New York Mets selected Jon “Rookie of the Year”
Matlack in first round (fourth pick overall) of free agent draft on June 6, 1967. – I think i speak for most Mets fans when i say I was shocked when M. Donald Grant traded him

New York Mets selected Rod “GASP” Gaspar in second round of free agent draft on June 6, 1967.

New York Mets selected Dave “who!”Schneck in 38th round of free agent draft on June 6, 1967.

New York Mets selected Rick Anderson in 24th round of free agent draft on June 6, 1978.

New York Mets selected Mike”fitzie” Fitzgerald in sixth round of free agent draft on June 6, 1978. – He was a good catcher but he got us Gary Carter

New York Mets selected Brian Giles in second round of free agent draft on June 6, 1978. He was a no bat all glove second baseman and he was exciting to watch in the field

New York Mets selected Hubie Brooks in first round (third pick overall) of free agent draft on June 6, 1978. – one of the all time under appreciated Mets !!!

New York Mets selected Dave West in fourth round of free agent draft on June 6, 1983. – I believe he was in the trade that got us Bobby Ojeda

New York Mets selected Calvin ( scrub!)Schiraldi in first round (27th pick overall) of free agent draft on June 6, 1983. – i know for a fact we delt him for Bobby O !

New York Mets selected Stan ” WE AIN’T MOVIN ON UP” Jefferson in first round (20th pick overall) of free agent draft on June 6, 1983.

New York Mets selected Dave ” MAGS!!” Magadan in second round of free agent draft on June 6, 1983. Fun fact – Lou Pinella is his uncle

New York Mets selected Jeff Innis in 13th round of free agent draft on June 6, 1983. he turned into a serviceable middle relief pitcher for many teams

New York Mets selected Rick Aguilera in third round of free agent draft on June 6, 1983. – I wish we never traded him

Detroit Tigers signed James Baldwin of the New York Mets as a free agent on June 6, 2004.

    Good Morning Rustoleum and fellow
Met fanaticos!,First Happy 65th anniversary to all those who were
    involved in the largest,greatest and
    most important military invasion in
    world history on this day,06/06/44.
Including my granfather who left his
mortal body that day on a beach in
France. Rusty,Dave West was part of
the Frank Viola deal which didn’t
work out as well as it should in a
trade which would never have had to be
made if not for the mental weakness
of our beloved Doc Gooden. Interesting
that many of the names mentioned today
were involved in some of the most pivotal deals in our history.
A word of caution to the younger fans
who haven’t suffered as much as us
older fans, the likes of Stan Jefferson,David West,Cal Schiraldi,
    Mike Fitzgerald and Dave Magidan
were not just our top prospects BUT
some of the top prospects in the game
    at the time.When dealt,many,many Met
fans were more than a bit nervous b/c
of our history to that point.
Take a good look at the careers of
    those guys,no HOFers there.
    So,beware of “prospects” for every
    one that works out,ten don’t.
Lets Go Mets and have a good day
    fellas!

Oh – no I understand – thanks for the heads up btw who else was the pitcher other than west and aggie that we sent for viola ? He had a long career if I remember right

          1. fongy2

            Kevin Tapani who we
            had aquired
            I think from the A’s
            asa minor
            leaguer
            a yr before

West was gonna be Koosman and
Jefferson was gonna be the next Mookie
I too was a huge Hubie Brooks fan
Sad we got him back a little too late
    in his career

I loved Mike Fitzgerald. When he was with the Mets, I was so looking forward to his growth and development in concert with that of the team. As Fongy pointed out, it never really happened with any team. When he was traded in a package for Gary Carter, I still loved him. Thanks for everything Mike!

I seem to recall that I was at Shea for a game in which Hubie Brooks made 3 errors playing 3rd, but I can’t prove it. Other than that, I was very pleasantly surprised to see how productive he was later in his career.
