2009 MLB Amateur Draft Amateur Primer

The MLB amateur draft takes place starting Tuesday June 9th.  If it is possible to know less than nothing about something, I know less than nothing about the MLB amateur draft.  In my attempt to know more than nothing, I have discovered a few interesting and other not so interesting things along the way.  Here are a few of them:

It takes three days.

“The draft begins Tuesday at 6 p.m. on the MLB Network with the first 111 picks, including Round One, Compensation Round A, Round Two, Round Three and Compensation Round B. The draft continues with the fourth round on Wednesday beginning at noon and then concludes Thursday.”

Stephen Strasburg is about to become very rich.

“The negotiations between the Nationals and Strasburg’s adviser, Scott Boras, are getting crazy, and technically they haven’t even started yet.
People familiar with Boras’ thinking expect the asking price to be $50 million, which would blow away the $10.5 million record for an amateur. While the best amateur prospects, such as Mark Prior, Mark Teixeira and David Price, all have signed in the $10 million range, Boras is expected to use Japanese import Daisuke Matsuzaka, who received $52 million from Boston after the Red Sox paid a $51 million posting fee, as the real Strasburg comp. Boras will argue Strasburg, who turns 21 next month, shouldn’t receive anything less than the 28-year-old Matsuzaka (also a Boras client), that he is as good (or better since he’s younger and throws harder) and that the dynamic is the same.”

103mph + #1 pick = $50,000,000

103mph + #1 pick = $50,000,000

The Mets don’t have a first round pick.

“The inherent frustration of being a first-round wallflower undoubtedly will hit the Mets in the First-Year Player Draft. And when the Angels use what would have been the Mets’ selection, the 24th pick, it might sting a bit. But the Mets need only look at one of their ninth innings to recognize that the selection they forfeited was the wisely met cost of importing Francisco Rodriguez.”

You can use hindsight to critique teams’ past drafts.

Website mymlbdraft.com has every pick of every draft from 1980 through today so you can take solace that in 1983 when the Mets took 3B Eddie Williams with the 4th overall pick instead of Roger Clemens, 13 other teams passed on him too before the Red Sox took him with the 19th overall pick.  The Mets more than made up for that oversight though by taking Clemens’ University of Texas teammate Calvin Schiraldi at #27.

People conduct mock drafts whether all the mockers show up or not.

“New York
72) Ryan Buch, RHP, Monmouth
103) Ruben Sierra Jr, OF, Puerto Rico HS

COMMENT: The Mets director didn’t show up, so I did this. Buch had one of the best arms still on the board, perhaps a bit raw for a college guy but the type of pitcher the Mets seem to be interested in. He is also local with a New Jersey connection. This is also an organization that loves raw tools types, and Sierra fits that category very well.”

The draft lasts up to 50 rounds, but may stop sooner.

“Question:

How many rounds are there?

Answer:
Up to 50 rounds. Each Club continues to select until it makes its selection in the 50th round, unless the Club chooses to “pass” instead of making a selection in a round. Once a Club chooses to pass, it is precluded from making any further selections.”

That’s enough information for me.  Any more and I would no longer be an amateur.

SECOND COMING: Carlos Beltran will closely monitor the opening rounds of tomorrow’s amateur draft. Beltran’s cousin, Reymond Fuentes Beltran, is projected to go early, perhaps before the Mets have a chance to take him with their first pick, 72nd overall. The younger Beltran is a lefty-hitting center fielder, who can run the 60-yard dash in 6.2-6.3 seconds.

“He’s going to be a good player – not because he’s my cousin, just judging by the talent he has,” the Mets center fielder said. “He’s very disciplined. For being young, he loves to work. That’s what impresses me the most.”

Oh crap, that’s too much information. Now I’m no longer considered an amateur. 8)

of all the ironies, per mymlbdraft.com predicts Beltran’s cousin to go to the Angels.

24 – Los Angeles Angels receive this pick as compensation for the New York Mets signing Francisco Rodriguez.

Interesting rational on why boras is asking so much for strasburgh. Is draft money gauranteed?

Oh yeah, I think that every penny of whatever he signs for will surely be guaranteed….I am not positive, but I think that, unlike football, every penny baseball draft picks sign for is guaranteed….

      1. sabermetrician

Yeah, draft signing bonus is guaranteed.

i would sign it, then retire when teh check cleared.

Kyle Farnsworth throws harder than Dice-K as well…

      1. GravediggerHebner

        Quick, someone tell the Nationals!

I was watching an UltiMet Classic (you know, one of the 4 that they have on loop). It was from 2000, the series in Japan. Kyle Farnsworth was pitching for the Cubs. He was a hot shot back then.

I’m sick of watching David Cone’s 19 strikeout game against Milt Thompson and Dave Hollins.

      2. sabermetrician

I think Strasburg is the real deal though. I’ve followed the kid a bit and I think he has a chance to have a Doc Gooden kind of impact.

Ah, but if a tree falls in the woods and nobody is around to hear it…

        2. DNDJohan aka kistics

Does that mean the Nats need a drug counselor in their locker room?

  3. DNDJohan aka kistics

I wish I could throw 120 mph….. how about Mets buy the pick from the Nats for $55 mil…

    1. sabermetrician

I’d be up for it! lol

    2. Kingman 26

Maybe the Nats would throw in LMilz…..

      1. CaseStreet

        to play in Buffalo?

        1. sabermetrician

          St. Lucie.

          1. There's Always '09

            St. Lucia?

      2. DNDJohan aka kistics

        I don’t want LMilz… I want RZimmz…

  4. DNDJohan aka kistics

You guys already know this, but if the season ended today, Mets are in the playoff with the WC?? Rest of the NL must be pretty bad… though Cards are tied with the Mets, percentage point behind…

    1. There's Always '09

      Three games against the Dodgers?

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

        yes…

LOL… that would suck, wouldn’t it? but then, they don’t have Manny!

      2. sabermetrician

We could take the Dodgers at full strength.

Sorry guys, server has been crazy all day.

  6. dirtysanchez

    Great job grave!

Wonder if some will overslot for strausberg as the nats might not pony up that kinda doe

    1. trs86

Good question Dirty. I think the Nats have to take the pick but they may dump some salary to go towards it. Why keep Nick Johnson, Josh Willingham, Austin Kearns etc?

Couldn’t agree more about losing the first round draft pick to the Angels for KRod. He was so worth that. I STILL don’t know why the Angels fans didn’t care they were losing him.
Uh…can you say Fuentes guys? When Fuentes was blowing several saves in the beginning of the season, there wasn’t one fan on the Halos blog that said ‘we should have resigned KRod’.

    Their loss, our gain.

    1. GravediggerHebner

The Angels are 26th in the majors with 11 blown saves. The Mets have 6 and the Reds lead the majors with 2!

  8. metsfan4decades

Since it’s an off day, I’ve had time to read each and every post and reply. Great stuff and I’m learning everything I never wanted to know about sabermetrics – lol.

And some of you guys are just too funny.

  9. metsfan4decades

O.K., since I’m bored and doing a lot of reading tonight saw this over on the ‘old’ mets blog:

In a report for Baseball Prospectus, Joe Sheehan lists Oliver Perez among six players who, if everything goes according to plan, could eventually win 300 games.

Even as one who is ready to admit I was in favor of the Ollie signing, let me just say…

    HAHAHAHAHAHA !!
    ***********

Also saw the chuckle of the evening from a Met fan who was responding to a Phils fan bashing the Mets on another blog. He comments that the Phillies won the WS and when ‘are you all gonna get over the Mets’? Goes on to say ‘get some class, dude. In case you don’t know what that word means, you can find it in the dictionary – you know, that book that’s currently holding your window open.’

    1. trs86

LOL, he only has 244 more to go. LOL, he only has to average 25 wins a year for 9 straight years.

    2. trs86

Speaking of the Phillies, I really thought it would be great if we could have done a live chat with the head blogger from one of the Phillies blogs but it kind of got here too quickly.

      1. GravediggerHebner

I realize it’s not nearly the same thing, but I am planning to do my usual “glimpse at the opponent’s blogs” thing tomorrow. I already have a bunch of their blogs bookmarked, but I can’t say I’m looking forward to reading them.

        1. trs86

Agreed, it’s pained me to look for one to add to the community.
