Getting Our Phil: A Glimpse At Some Phillies Blogs

One of these things is not like the others

One of these things is not like the others

As the Philadelphia Phillies and their notoriously gracious fans prepare to invade New York for what weather permitting (Prismo work your magic!) will be a 3 game division series, here’s a brief look at what some Phillies’ bloggers are saying:

At Phillies Nation (attention Red Sox lawyers) they are worried that this may be a trap series for the Phils, a series in which the Phils must play uncharacteristic “small ball” to succeed.  Reading Phillies Nation today reminded me that many reasonable fans of other baseball teams seem to have more respect for the Mets than Mets fans do.  Either that or all fans just disrespect their own teams, you decide.

Shane, Jimmy, Jayson, I think these belong to you

Shane, Jimmy, Jayson, I think these belong to you

At The Good Phight they recap what they consider to be a disappointing series in LA with the Dodgers, and provide a list of Phils related links for your Phils reading pleasure.

I love LA

I love LA

At Beer Leaguer they have a trove of off day news and notes, my favorite of which is their embarrassment that Jimmy Rollins (.222 BA/ .261 OBP/ .322 SLG) currently leads NL shortstops in All-Star Game voting.

Whoops, I just voted for Jimmy Rollins

Hebs, my sympathies for having to browse around on Philly blogs.

Although you are probably right that the hard core fans (the lunatics that frequent places like this!) are probably way more critical and chicken little-ish than more objective observers.

Your sympathy is appreciated, but it really wasn’t bad. At least not what the bloggers wrote, I didn’t dive into any comment sections. I have always really enjoyed the work of the guy (Jason Weitzel) who writes Beer Leaguer, he strikes me as very even-handed, but I hadn’t looked at any of the other blogs before today. I hope I am also pleasantly surprised when I look into Yankee blogs on Friday.

Until you die it is. :-)

    2. GravediggerHebner

Yes, that’s why I put the caption “one of these things is not like the others” because one of those things is not on the team any longer.

  4. CaseStreet

Prismo, is there a weather update?

I feel like i have to be at every Santana game, cuz I don’t want to miss the first no-no.

        I only wish…

  6. mrose

so umm… not sure this is good or bad for the Mets
Lidge goes to the DL – right knee sprain

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

really? I assume Madson will close then… not good…

    2. CaseStreet

      got tix for today’s game?

      1. mrose

        case – i do, but they sold…so i’m not goin… u?

        1. CaseStreet

yup, I’m thinking of going to the box office. Don’t think it’s sold out.

    3. GravediggerHebner

That’s bad news because Madson has been great and their were some rumblings he might take over the role anyway.

      1. sabermetrician

That’s horrible news. I wanted to tee off on that fool.

        1. GravediggerHebner

Agreed, I was actually considering the possibility of some home team home runs.

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

But then, their mid-relievers become that much weaker (I believe Mets do well against their middle relievers). So, the game might not even get to Madson but turn it over to FRANKIE!

      2. rustyjr

Just like Alfred e. Neuman I day ” what – me worried” !!!

  7. sabermetrician

ESPN’s AccuScore has a 56% chance that the Mets win tonight. Not much to go on, but I’m getting so freaking antsy for this game tonight any good news is welcome news.

  8. smooth

Breaking News! Phillies place Lidge on DL!

    http://twitter.com/NYPost_Mets

    1. QnsNative718

Which is probably a bad thing for us. Wouldve loved to been the next team to hammer him.

  9. smooth

Lidge on the DL for phillies, Im sure Omar Minaya feels better about the mets chances now that the phillies will know what its like not to have a closer! Baseball gods are helping us out here guys

    1. GravediggerHebner

I wish I agreed, but I was looking forward to a thrilling comeback victory against him, he’s been getting knocked around. Now that opportunity is gone, which IMO is too bad because a dramatic come from behind walk off victory versus the Phils could’ve provided some nice juice for this team. Can still happen though.

    2. There's Always '09

I wonder if he has the same “injury” as Hughes, Wang, or Ollie.

      1. smooth

sprained right knee is what they said

        1. There's Always '09

          Similar to Ollie’s :-)

Ugh. He should have those series of growths on his face checked out while he’s at the pediatrician’s office too.

  10. DNDJohan aka kistics

I just looked at Cot’s Baseball contracts and it looks like the Mets are going to Shed off nearly $50 Mil this off season. We may see another big signing. But who?

I don’t like Holliday, but at 3/36 (like many analysts have said), he can be a good signing. But then he’s a Boras client.
Delgado maybe gone, but if he’s willing to sign for $8-10 mil, it might not be bad.
    Can Orlando Hudson play 1B?
Ramon Hernandez maybe available and Victor Martinez has a club option.
I don’t know if the Mets can beat out BoSox on Bay, but that would be a good signing.
As for SPs, Lackey, Bedard, Harden, Duchscherer and Marquis are unrestricted FAs…

$50 mil is a lot to spend, but will they spend it all? That’s like 2 Mannys….

    1. sabermetrician

Man, the SPs are injury guys for the most part. I wouldn’t mind Holliday at 3/$36 and Delgado at 1/$8 could be a great pickup. O-Dog doesn’t make much sense at 1B, let’s quit playing players out of position.

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Yes, Holliday at 3/36 would be great. I would also take Delgado @8. That’s only adding $20 mil for 2010. I would also try incentive contracts for either Lackey or Harden.

        1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Actually Lackey isn’t that bad at all. He’s going to be 31 this season and has started 32-33 games 5 seasons straight before getting injured last year. But even last year, he started 24 games with 12 wins under 4 ERA.

If Omar can sign Pedro, there’s no reason to miss out on this guy.

          1. There's Always '09

I’d like to sign Marquis for the back end of the rotation. He has been more than a spare pitcher over the last few years.

I would stay away from someone like Holliday. I really don’t see his numbers translating to Citi Field. Same for Jason Bay. I also think Jason Bay would be stupid to leave Boston. That wall was built for him. He will be a great player for them.

  11. sabermetrician

If Madson comes out and fails now that he’s closing that would be huge. Mess with this team psychologically.

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

we should propose a trade. Putz and Castillo for Utley. OR Putz and Ollie for Hammels.

      I would do that…

      1. sabermetrician

Yeah, I guess you could talk me into it.

        1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Omar! LET’S GET THIS DEAL DONE!!

      2. There's Always '09

        FMart for the Popcorn Head.

        1. DNDJohan aka kistics

You would trade FMart of Werthless?

          1. There's Always '09

No, but while we were talking about bad trades, figured I’d throw that one in there.

You used 4 letters in a row that this blog automatically blocks. You put a chicken before it and an e after it but it still gets blocked. That and one other 4 letter word that is similar to Marshall Faulk’s last name go straight into moderation.
