Slurm: The Official Party Drink of Slurms McKenzie The Party Worm
A night after a game featuring 7 home runs, The New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies played a game in which only 2 were hit, but both were by Chase Utley (14, 15) and the second one came in the top of the 11th inning off Bobby Parnell, the first home run he’s allowed in his major league career, to give the Phillies a 5-4 victory and a 2-4 record versus the Mets this season.

Pelfrey couldn't control his anger
In a game filled with sparkling defensive plays by both teams, two defensive miscues cost the Mets the lead. In the top of the 7th inning with the Mets ahead 4-1, Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez started the inning with back to back singles off of a rattled Mike Pelfrey. In the previous inning Utley called time and stepped out of the batter’s box prompting Pelfrey to yell at him and the two exchanged pleasantries from 60′ 6″. Then Pelfrey appeared to suffer a return of the “yips” which had plagued him in a recent appearance, causing him to balk multiple times in that game. In this game he did not balk but he stepped off the mound and first David Wright, then the whole infield joined by Jerry Manuel spoke with Pelfrey to calm him down. He got out of that inning, but not the next one.

No la tengo
With Howard and Ibanez on 1st and 2nd with no one out, Jayson Werth hit a ball to the centerfield wall that Beltran leapt too high to catch and it bounced off the heel of his glove. It was scored a single which loaded the bases, and Pelfrey was replaced on the mound by Sean Green. Pedro Feliz then singled in a run to make it 4-2. Carlos Ruiz then hit a ground ball which was muffed by Wright making it 4-3. After pinch hitter Paul Bako struck out, a Jimmy Rollins ground ball out drove in the tying run.

Classic album, not a winning formula for the Mets
The Mets left 16 runners on base, and even when they did score played station to station ball. Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the 4th inning, the Mets scored 3 runs on 3 consecutive bases loaded singles by Pelfrey (who had doubled earlier), Luis Castillo and Alex Cora.

Pelfrey hit better than he pitched
Aside from Pelfrey’s 2 for 3 night at the plate, other bright spots included both Wright and Omir Santos going 3 for 5, and the Mets knocking around World Series MVP Cole Hamels with 13 baserunners and 4 runs in 5 innings. Also of note were back-to-back sparkling defensive plays in the 5th by Wright and Beltran. Wright barehanded a ground ball and threw Werth out at first, then Beltran made a diving grab of a sinking liner off the bat of Feliz. Fernando Tatis made a spectacular leaping grab of a liner off the bat of Werth and stepped on first for a double play in the 10th. All that great play could not overcome the 2 miscues and the 16 left on base. Tonight’s defeat was the 6th this season for the Mets after leading by at least 3 runs. Tomorrow night the Mets look to win the rubber game of this series with Tim Redding versus Jaime Moyer.

Omar does know these games count
right? Is there any chance of him
bringing in a legit RBI man to protect
Beltran and Wright? Oh,wait I think
I’ve said that before,in ’07,’08,
after last season,all winter,spring
and when we lost Delgado, maybe for the
season. OR will he just let us con’t
to let his team play its heart out
and lose games like tonight?
How good was Pelphrey?
How many men were left on?
In scoring position?
AND how many times should tonights
(and last nights)game have been blown
open? Just take a look at our lineup!
Slappy,Cora,Church and Santos?
Washed-up,Back-up,Back-up&Back-up!
Counting on kids like Murphy&FMart
in big spots off the bench?
Is the plan really “hang-around”
until August when(maybe)we get back
Reyes&Delgado? As if we weren’t a
hitter or two short with them.

problem is the bats of those guys who would help are on teams that still feel are contenders…..only guy is nick and we can only hope that the nats are asking too much for him because i have no idea what omar is waiting for. Thing is you gotta look at it this way, the phills are at full strength. We are playing with a depleted lineup. They got lucky tonight…..werth doesnt come up with that…we win.

sheffield and beltran killed us with RISP and the wright error are what cost us the game. You can also look at the blown call in the 4th on the grounder beltran hit. That woulld have gave us a 5th run and kept the inning going. Time to get em tomorrow and win the series. We bounced back from much tougher losses against the phillies last season, this is a bounceback team.

agreed…we play well against the phills no matter what. Shef cannot get it done anymore imo..he is playing injured.

Luck,schmuck Dirty!
You make your own luck.
Shef,Tatis&Cora are the type of players who
can give you 200/250ABs
at this point in their
careers.Church is a platoon OFer at best,
when right.Santos is
a back-up Catcher and
Slappy is,well..a waste.A creative GM
with some foresight
should be able to
address this situation.
Continuing with bringing in the likes
of Emil Brown(who we still owe a player for)
And Chip Ambers ain’t
gonna get it done!

church is fine for a starting OF
the mets are trying to get it done with bench players period..we need another bat

Correction! On a
Championship type team,Maybe,just maybe Church
would be OK
as your 3rd best
OFer/7 Hitter with a
Similar
Righty Bat to
help him.
AND Championship teams
have multiple
Big/Vet
Bats on their bench
Not just a bunch of
Kids and Defensive replacements Especially
when your lineup
already
carries
Slappy,Scheider
and Church as regulars.

Can we leave Church alone? It is beyond my comprehension why everyone is so down on him. Did we forget he hit the gave winning
HR Tuesday night? Before his concussion, he was the best player on this team last year. He is not the problem. Guys like Tatis and Murphy, and an injured Sheff are the problem in that lineup. Not to mention Slap-Happy Luis.

This was such a disappointing loss.
I believe you make your own luck, for the most part. At this point, with our second string and bench players, we’re going to win just enough games to stay in it and not enough to actually secure a spot in the post season.
Here’s hoping Reyes makes a difference and we’re still within striking distance when Delgado gets back – along with Putz and maybe Wagner (although I think the BP is the least of our problems).

I am still in shock from last night that Beltran dropped that ball. If that is caught, Phillies would not have tied us up.

EXACTLY! that was my point last night when i blamed the loss on the defense.
