Slurm Post Game: Philadelphia Phillies 6, New York Mets 3

Official animated soft drink of TRDMB

Official animated soft drink of TRDMB

TRDMB would like to thank Slurm for sponsoring the post game during this series with the Phillies, but we’re too busy drinking Slurm.  It’s highly addictive!

UPDATE: 10:43pm  John Maine to the 15 day DL with shoulder fatigue/weakness, no replacement yet announced.

Take my urine, please

Take my urine, please

Raul Ibanez, who earlier this week deflected suggestions that he’s used performance enhancing drugs, did not help his case tonight when he hit a 3-run homer (21) at Citi Field in the 10th inning to propel the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6-3 victory over the New York Mets.  Both starters, Jamie Moyer for the Phils and Tim Redding for the Mets, gave quality starts but neither were around in the 10th inning.  Bobby Parnell (2-2) gave up a one out single to Shane Victorino and was replaced on the mound by lefthanded reliever Ken Takahashi, who promptly walked Chase Utley to put runners on 1st & 2nd.  After Ryan Howard struck out for the 71st time this season, Ibanez flexed his dubious muscles and dashed the hopes of those fans in attendance not wearing gauche red.

Cora as hyphen

Cora as hyphen

The first 5 innings of this game for the Mets were Alex Cora as hyphen.  In the 1st inning, Luis Castillo doubled, Cora sacrificed him over and Carlos Beltran drove him in.  In the 3rd inning, Castillo singled, Cora sacrificed him to 2nd base and Beltran doubled him in.  Castillo doubled leading off the 5th, Cora grounded out to 1st base moving Castillo over, and Beltran hit a sacrifice fly to right to drive him in.  Cora playing team ball and moving Castillo along contributed to 3 runs scored for Castillo and 3 RBI for Beltran.  May the people who referred to Cora as “garbage” this offseason when he was acquired take note.

The two Philly fans that I will miss

The two Philly fans that I will miss

So the Mets shed themselves of one horrid fanbase only to encounter another as they board the armored transport for the trip to the Boogie Down Bronx for a weekend series against a team that at least has a quantity of World Series rings worth noting, the New York Yankees.

well at least the yankees are going to get swept in boston

  2. rustyjr

I’m pissed and depressed – at least the sox are beating the skanks

  3. gland

Cerrone is reporting Maine to the DL

    1. smooth

Wow can we get better news after 2 devasting losses lol I am not suprised by annything at this point. It’s now time to panic. I assume Nieve gets a start? or Jon Niese?

      1. gland

I’m not sure who is on schedule in Buffalo. Nieve would make sense. Maybe Figueroa? Niese would be a disaster.

        1. smooth

Well i think its fair to say that we would be happy with just 1 win vs the yankees this weekend. This team is in really bad shape now, Omar is going to have to pull something off

          1. gland

Of course it’s not like the Yankees are on a big roll right now either. At least the Mets won a game vs. the Phillies. The Yankees just got demoralized in Boston.

          2. mrbill

so far my prediction of 2-4 is right (not happy about it though)

  4. smooth

Its amazing to think that our bullpen was a strength going into the series, yet their bullpen outpitched ours without their closer. That is a depressing thought. Also observing the box score we limit ibanez to 1 hit and its the one that wins the game. Un-be-lievable!

  5. Joe R

here we go guys…this might get tough. depressed and very very worried to say the least. 4 back and now the yanks who have lost 3 in a row..not good. Manuel is a joke his reason for not using krod…wasnt going to use him unless it was a save…he said no guarantee we would have won in the bottom half!!!!!!! give us a shot Jerry!

    1. Kingman 26

I agree. Stokes would have been better too.

Again, Takahashi was mediocre in Japan, and had faced 28 LH batters this year, and allowed 11 hits and 3 BB. A .440 BA and a .500 OBP VS lefties.

      1. gland

The ironic thing is that after he struck out Howard everyone was probably thinking “hmm, maybe he can get lefties out”. But then no.

        1. Kingman 26

Well, he does get one out of two lefties out, as the stats unfortunately show!

    2. mrbill

I thought after K-rod pitched the two innings last night he was not going to be available.

      1. Joe R

        he was available.

      2. Kingman 26

Yeah Mr Bill, Jerry was defending his decision not to use KRod in a tie game tonight, which seemed to say that KRod was available.

Personally, I think Stokes would have been better too. Maybe he can strike out Raul the Great.

I don’t think Takahashi could strike you and I out back to back!

        1. mrbill

If he was available then Jerry should have been used. (I did not watch the post game or most of the game for that matter).

          AND i am glad i didn’t :)

          1. Joe R

            yes he should have

          2. Kingman 26

Agreed on all counts Mr Bill.

  6. Kingman 26

Grave, your graphics continue to impress!

Maine to the DL…can it get worse?

I hope we have people carrying Wright and Beltran and Johan and KRod home at night on soft pillows and safely tucking them into bed….

    1. mrbill

      LOL

  7. Mr. Mets Butler

I hate to sound so negative but I think it’s safe to say this team is horse fodder. Maine to the DL now. What a demoralizing season! Put it in the books.

    1. Kingman 26

Way too early for that. WAY too early.

      1. gland

I’m with you Brock…110%. WAY WAY WAY too early for that!!!!!

      2. Mr. Mets Butler

Not with Omar refusing to bring in any reinforcements. He seems to think the season is over.

        1. Kingman 26

No he doesn’t. You don’t make a move in desperation. And we have to see how bad Maine’s injury is, and how Jose and Delgado are progressing, and how a bit more of this hell-stretch of schedule goes, to see exactly what we need to obtain.

Yes, a bat looks needed, but if Maine is out for a while, a really good starter will clearly be need number one.

          1. mrbill

            WE ARE DESPERATE!!!

          2. Mr. Mets Butler

sorry King… we will aqree to disagree. This team is desperate. And if you don’t make a move in desperation, then when do you make one?

          3. Kingman 26

Cool and correct, but you guys are mis-interpreting my desperation comment…yes, we surely ARE desperate, but we have so many needs—if Jose is not coming back, we need a leadoff hitter…if Delgado’s rehab is not going well and if Shef’s legs are gone, we surely need a big bat…and now, if Maine is out for a while, we need a starter.

I think that we are very desperate, but every other team knows that, and Omar has to gauge what our biggest need is before making a big plunge. We do not have the chips for more than one big move I would guess, so while we are desperate, we are even more in need of Omar making the right move(s)…

          4. metsgirl31

I agree…he cannot afford a bad “panic” move…and my god how depressing is it to see all the “ifs” listed in your post.

          5. mrbill

I know what you meant kingman. I am just saying that met fans are desperate.

          6. Kingman 26

Agreed again, and trust me, I am desperate too!!

            This sux!!

      3. smooth

How will this team survive over the next 2 weeks against good teams with this offense and now very thin pitching. Im starting to give up on the season barring a trade or a miracle

      4. Joe R

def way too early…yes we lost..but we are battling. Jerrys plan according to him at post conference stsy at .500 and then win 15 out of 20 lol not my words his. Krod Jerry…give us a shot!!

  8. CaseStreet

any reason why Church was out today?

    1. Mr. Mets Butler

      because Jerry is an ass!

    2. Kingman 26

      Because he sucks?

      Just a guess….

Sorry buddy, but I am off the Church bandwagon…for every homer or double, we see too many weak at bats….

      1. Mr. Mets Butler

yeah… I must say FMart had some wonderful at bats today.

        1. Kingman 26

          Touche!

          1. Mr. Mets Butler

            lol… back at ya.

      2. CaseStreet

I don’t know, don’t know if F-Mart will do any better right now. I’d rather give Church regular at bats and see what we got w/ him. Church at least gives you power in the 6 spot.

        1. Kingman 26

True, but I guess Jerry is just hoping FMart is ready. He must fantasize about FMart hitting homers and energizing the team….

    3. Joe R

Starting to not like Jerry at all. How can Church get hot, feel like he is a big part of this team, develop chemistry, get a big hit, I thought we needed power and were going to try and get him going!! Jerry u stink.

    4. Kingman 26

And Case, I officially have started to hate Raul, that juiced, PED-taking, senior citizen, chooses Philly over NY jackass!!

      1. Joe R

Haha.. he’s a great player however u want to slice it. He’s like what we almost had in Alou!!!!!!

  9. Kingman 26

OMG–off topic, but they just said that the Yanks’ Wang’s ERA after 5 starts, if I heard this correctly, is the highest of any MLB starter after that many starts since 1913! And we miss him! The luck continues!

    1. metsgirl31

This made me laugh a little and I really needed that tonite…thanks!

      1. Kingman 26

You are welcome! And it made me laugh too, especially the part about us of course missing him…but we do miss CC too….

        1. smooth

our offense would lower Wangs ERA , so im sure wang is just as dissapointed.

          1. Mr. Mets Butler

lol… good one Smooth. I was thinking the same thing.

  10. Joe R

So damn tired of Jerry ONLY going with his gut and only looking at what a player did the game before. Reason for not using Krod. Jerry said was only going to use him in a save situation!! He also said what happens if we used him and dint win in the bottom of the inning! How about giving us a chance!! Play for the inning! Jerry this was a huge game u idiot. Reason for Jerry sticking with Ken u ask? Jerry says even though he cant get lefties out and they are hitting like .500 the Phils havent seen him…as if there great hitters cant hit a 40 yr old rookie they havent seen. Wow!!

    1. Mr. Mets Butler

Yeah… his KRod logic tonight is moronic. He said he didn’t want to use him in a tie situation. How can you possibly think that in a pivotal divisional matchup against your archrival? I don’t get it. He is an idiot for sure. Bring back Art Howe…j/k :)

      1. Joe R

Thats the thing! Agree. This wasnt against the Pirates in August with a 10 game lead in the standings!! This was a huge huge game against division rival with a chance of the season spiraling out of damn CONTROL!!!

  11. CaseStreet

So El Duque signed w/ Tex. Of course he’ll be healthy all year.

    1. CaseStreet

w/ Maine on the DL, we could’ve used Duque.

Pedro signing in how many days?

  12. Joe R

Maybe I have a bad shortb term memory but I dont remember questioning Willie nearly as much as I am Jerry this early in the year. Is it possible we could have had at least 2 more wins this season with some good managing? IDK maybe

    1. trs86

Oh yeah, we did badly. By this time the Willie bus was heating up.

    2. Mr. Mets Butler

I think you have a bad memory Joe.

      1. Joe R

        ok

  13. trs86

Got a question that nobody ask. Why pitch to Ibanez there?

    1. trs86

Walk him and face the RH.

    2. Mr North Jersey

      Gut instinct

    3. Joe R

Wow…excellent question. Maybe wild pitch or something

      1. smooth

Do you really want to leave Takahashi no room for error with the bases loaded?

        1. trs86

Better than letting Ibanez beat you. You could have brought in another reliever at that point too. A RH one. Stokes.

          1. smooth

good point there, manuel had faith in takahashi to get the lefty out but he should have managed the inning and walked ibanez then brought in stokes to face werth.

        2. Joe R

that is the down side but with the season ibanez is having the ending with him up is a foregone conclusion.

          1. trs86

Agreed. Can’t let him beat you. Let it be Werthless.

    4. Kingman 26

Geez, I was so furious at the fact that Takahashi was in, I did not even think of that! Great point!

  14. smooth

Lets give Jerry a break here, look at the roster he’s managing. Ibanez hit a good pitch off Takahashi, is it possible to tip your hat to the hitter sometimes? This can be blamed on our offense which failed to add tack on runs back to back nights. The phillies have players that get BIG hits , we dont. Its that simple, lets face it. You cant come to expect this roster to win many games in its current situation. Lets hope for the wild card

    1. Joe R

Nope…gave him too many breaks already. Decisions are decisions. Whether u have your full team or not.

    2. trs86

Not when you have an open base and Takashiiiiiiiiiiiitie can’t get LH out.

      1. Joe R

But Tr…the phils never saw him according to Jerry!! lol They never saw me either…..

        1. Kingman 26

And if you bat lefty, you have a 50% chance of getting of base against Takashitti.

        2. trs86

Really, I thought his first game was against them.

          1. Mr. Mets Butler

            So did I.

          2. Kingman 26

            It was.

          3. Joe R

Jerry and his gut!! go with the best player..they are the best because they have earned it over time J?erry…meaning they come through most of the time and certainly more times than Ken.

          4. Joe R

tell jerry that..to be fair he could have said barely have seen him…but the point remains the same

        3. Kingman 26

HAHA! I am awaiting moderation for using sh*t in the middle of Takahashi’s name!!

          I tried to say:

And Joe, if you bat lefty, you have a 50% chance of getting on base against Takashi**i.

    3. Kingman 26

Usually, I would agree. Not tonight.

Takahashi is a pitcher who was so-so in Japan.

He had faced 28 MLB LH hitters. He allowed them 11 hits and 3 walks. That is ATROCIOUS.

Anyone else should have been pitching.

Or, as TRS suggested, we should have walked the 2009 MVP so far and pitched to the righty.

      1. trs86

I just don’t understand it Kingman. Why pitch to him. At best pitch way around him.
What was the difference in adding another runner? Stop going by the book and look at the stats IN the book.

        1. Kingman 26

          Could not agree more.

Absolutely goes with Feliciano pitching to Diaz as the two worst Jerry moves.

          Bring in KRod.
          OR
          Bring in Stokes.
          OR
Walk Ibanez and pitch to the RH with Takahashi or Stokes.

          1. trs86

You walk Ibanez with Takawhatever and then bring in Stokes.

          2. Kingman 26

            Agreed 100%.

  15. Mr North Jersey

Minaya gave some more bad news regarding Maine and while I was hoping for some words of inspiration, TRS said it right to say what exactly do you expect Minaya to say. Tomorrow we play Yanks and nothing like running the table on them to make a Mets fan feel better. Remember last June vs Yanks and Delgado waking up? I do, can lightning strike twice?

    Here’s to hope.

    1. Kingman 26

Yes, I raise my next glass of Eagle Rare to hope!!

Cheers and let’s kick some Skankee rump!

    2. Mr. Mets Butler

Unfortunately, this time Delgado is not around to wake up.

  16. trs86

Cardinals, Reds, Giants…… Which one of those teams is better than the Mets even RIGHT NOW?

    1. Kingman 26

      Cardinals?

      1. trs86

I don’t think so. We are only .5 games back of them and they are not any better.

    2. Mr North Jersey

When you have a Santana, Krod, Wright, Beltran, and Parnell you have to believe you have a chance at post season. but with all the injuries is this enough to beat the likes of Cardinals, Reds, Giants over 162 games? Right now I do not know?

      1. trs86

        Giants, yes.
        Reds yes.
Cardinals? I don’t think they will run away and they can’t compete if we get healthy. Big if right now.
Still need Nick Johnson so this 1B mess can end.

  17. Mr North Jersey

    I miss Ollie

    1. Kingman 26

LOL!! Wouldn’t Ollie returning and being the savior just be perfect for this crazy year?!?!

      1. trs86

LOL, too bad he is shut down.

    2. trs86

What have you tried hitting him with?

      1. Kingman 26

        HAHAHA!!!!!

    3. Mr. Mets Butler

Wow. Never thought I would hear that line.

      1. Mr North Jersey

Me too Mr mets, me too…

  18. trs86

    # The Angels seem willing to listen on Mike Napoli, Jeff Mathis and their entire infield, which consists of Kendry Morales, Howie Kendrick, Erick Aybar and Chone Figgins.
    # They appear to have interest in young, high-upside pitchers, which could mean they’re unsure they’ll re-sign John Lackey after the season.

    1. trs86

You guys know my love for some Angels players. I like Napoli, Morales, Figgins….
Come to think of it Figgins would be PERFECT.

      1. trs86

IF we could some how swing a deal for Figgins and Morales I would run through the streets.

        1. Mr North Jersey

But will you do it with a fox? Will you do it in a box?

          1. trs86

            Yes, naked.

    2. Mr North Jersey

Lets be honest Minaya will have to pull a rabbit out his a$$ to turn this thing around via a trade. The kind of trade that goes down in history.

      1. trs86

To stay in the WC race NJ?
        Come on

        1. Mr North Jersey

Oh no I mean for a W.S. Title

          1. trs86

Who the hell knows what will happen in the playoffs. Phillies did not look like a WS winner last June.

          2. Mr North Jersey

Once again u r right TRS but for me I went into this year W.S. or bust my eyes have been on that prize and anything less I don’t wanna know. Phillies did not look like a WS winner last June is so true.

Here’s to hoping we look like a w.s. winner in October

    3. Mr. Mets Butler

In that case, isn’t Takahashi a young high upside pitcher! I’m sure we can get something of value back from the Angels. Maybe a sack of baseballs…

  19. Joe R

just amazing if we win 2 very close games we are tied for 1st…instead 4 out WoW..

    1. trs86

yup, yet people want to give up. We are that close with this lineup.

      1. smooth

Weve been that close for the past 3 years. That close doesnt cut it. Lets hope Nieve is our miracle and he turns out to be a solid starter to stop the bleeding at least.

        1. trs86

          3 years?

      2. QnsNative718

I’ve said it before, with this lineup, WE WILL BE OUT OF THE RACE BY THE ASB. It’s nothing against our boys, it’s just that they cannot possibly matchup with teams like the Phillies. Too much pressure for Beltran & Wright to produce. Too much pressure on Shef (Gotta love him, but he’s goin to burn out anyday) to produce. etc etc

I’ve thought about this with a clear mind and we are surely in Desperation Mode. Without a doubt.

    2. Mr North Jersey

The one that got away. Where have I heard that before?

  20. Mr. Mets Butler

With Maine going to the DL, Livan is now our #3 starter. Who would have predicted that before the season?

  21. dirtysanchez

guys…4 games is nothing. If we are 4 games back at the ASB…consider it a blessing.
Great wrap up as usual grave, i missed the game but with the wrap up i feel as if i didnt miss a thing.
why is taka pitching against lefties when his numbers show that he is better against righties??

    1. QnsNative718

See what I wrote above, Dirty. We won’t last. And no Im not Chicken Little. People are talking about the WC. Horrible mentality to have, especially when the Mets’ psyche is going to be dissected like a frog in September by the media.

      1. dirtysanchez

I still think we can take the division. Their bats are not going to keep them alive forever. I do agree we can use a bat(and while we are at it a better manager) but i doubt this thing is over. Ive said it 100x and ill say it again, nobody is running with this division. We could EASILY be under .500 right now with our injuries but we are still finding ways to win games. Yea we lost to the phills twice but it took them extra innings to do it. We hung with them. With maine however on the DL…things are getting interesting. I want to see someone from the medical staffs head roll…this is getting ridiculous!

  22. Mr North Jersey

I’m gonna be honest losing to Phils by allowing them back in game to tie it and watching them hit Hr’s the way no team has done all year at Citi including us the last 2 nights was very demoralizing for me.

    Is season over? HELL NO!

Am I concerned more than at any point this year? hell yea and this is why.

Phillies find a way to win. They fight their way back and back up their talk and have done so for a while now. They play the way the 86 Mets did and boy it kills for me to say that but be honest they are scrappy fighters and they have no pitching. If they did they could possibly run away with division.

Can we hang with them? Yes we just did it with a decimated roster but at full strength the question remains can we beat them over 7 games?

We have yet to show we can.

Game 7 Santana vs Hamels both teams at full strength who wins?

I wanna believe we do but I have doubt until they show me otherwise I have doubt.

It kills me to say that.

    1. dirtysanchez

look…we got to look past the phills. This type of short sightedness shot us in the foot last year. We came to play vs the phills but didnt get the job done with other teams. The phills won because they played the other teams very well. They have not had a winning record against us in 3 years. They focus on the war…we need to look ahead of the battle and focus on the war. If we do that we should be just fine. We just gotta hang around until the ASB and i think we are capable of that

      1. QnsNative718

Dirty, theyre 22-21 against us the past few yrs and I cant recall the actual number, but the majority of those wins came when we were leading.

        1. dirtysanchez

ill challenge that..im going to look that up. I know for a fact we had a winning record head to head vs the phills last year

          1. QnsNative718

No we did, but overall we’re 22-21 against Philly the past 3 yrs. GKR mentioned it.

          2. smooth

11-8 vs the phils last season

        2. Mr. Mets Butler

During the game, Gary said the Phils have comeback in 15 of their 21 wins against us. Well now… 16 of 22.

      2. Mr North Jersey

You da man Dirty! I’ll be fine come tomorrow it’s just the last 2 games with Maine’s DL and Yankees this weekend well let’s just say I needed to vent.

Hey TRS, You da man ALSO :-)

Man, it’s not easy being a Mets fan.

        1. dirtysanchez

          nope…never is lol

  23. QnsNative718

Well atleast the Yanks got beat AGAIN by the Sox. Going to the game Sat, and it’s a relief theyre in the position theyre in too. I was worried Id get kicked out by the 6th for fighting.

  24. stickguy

Frustrating game. Especially since they really should have taken the last 2. Just one big hit, when they had pelnty of chances, and they could be tied right now.

Certainly not out of it. And, remembering their is a WC too is not defeatist, or somehow insulting to the team. Just a reason not to panic too much if the Phils build up a modest lead.

It is still relatively early in the season. Time for the Mets to get players back (or even bring in someone new), and time for the Phils to get hit by key injuries too (to the offense, which has had none so far). THings can change.

ANd heck, maybe they will play better come mid-july to August if they are being counted out. They can go with the old no one respects us, what do we have to lose philosphy (pretty much what the Phils did in 2007).

Anyway, you can’t get down thinking about what happens in a NLCS or WS matchup. Who knows what the team could look like then? Entirely possible that they sneak into the playoffs, then make a big run (it’s happened before: Cards in 2006 anyone?)

DO I think this team is as good as it needs to be? No. Can it get better? Yes. Can it stay close enough to be in the hunt for the next 6 weeks? Sure.

FInally, improve if yo ucan, but only in the context of the future too. You cant gut the farm and kill the budget for 2010++ by making panic moves. With this many holes, it may not matter anyway.

Still, shoot for a Marquis + a cheap (prospect bat), and see what happens.

    1. QnsNative718

I like the way you think.

      1. stickguy

And don’t forget, I am devilishly handsome too!

  25. stickguy

Oh yeh, I know it is probably too early, but I am ready for the Brad Holt era to start soon!
