Allstate Post Game: New York Yankees 9, New York Mets 8

allstatelogotopTonight’s Post Game is brought to you by Allstate.  You’re in good hands with Allstate.

With a 1-run lead entering the bottom of the 9th inning, the Mets brought in closer Francisco Rodriguez and his perfect 16 for 16 save record to close out the game.  With 2 outs and runners on 1st and 2nd, he induced Alex Rodriguez to pop up to short right field.  ARod slammed his bat down in disgust and jogged dejectedly toward 1st base as the baserunners Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira dutifully circled the bases while Met second baseman Luis Castillo drifted awkwardly under the pop fly.

Then in typical Met fashion, as Castillo attempted a one-handed catch the ball bounced off of his glove and as he picked it up and threw it to second base for no apparent reason, Jeter and Teixeira scored to give the Yankees the come from behind victory, handing KRod his first blown save and loss of the season, and the New York Yankees a 9-8 victory over the New York Mets.

see-saw-fat-guyThe game was a seesaw affair.  The lead changed hands 6 times.  A Robinson Cano solo homer gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning.  In the top of the 3rd the Mets took the lead 2-1 by sending 8 batters to the plate but not getting a hit.  That inning featured 2 hit batsmen and 3 walks.  In the bottom of the 3rd the Yankees took the lead back on a 2-run homer by Teixeira.

The Mets took their biggest lead in the top of the 5th when Ryan Church doubled in Carlos Beltran and David Wright, then Gary Sheffield drove in Church with a 2-run homer down the left field line, making the score 6-3.  The Yankees got 1 run back on a solo homer by Jeter in the bottom of the 5th, then took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the 6th on a 3-run blast off the bat of Hideki Matsui.  The Mets tied the game at 7 on a double play ground out by pinch hitter Fernando Tatis in the top of the 7th.

Lucky winner

Lucky winner

Mariano Rivera came on with 2 outs in the top of the 8th in a tie game to face Beltran.  He promptly walked Beltran, then Wright followed with a clutch RBI double and Met fans celebrated.  But it was not to be as Castillo didn’t use 2 hands in the bottom of the 9th.  Tomorrow doesn’t get any better for Met fans as those of us who watch the games on TV must suffer through Fox broadcasters Joe Buck and Tim McCarver.

the allstate thing made me chuckle. A chuckle was all I could muster…. this sucks

  2. trs86

Sorry about the Meta thing Grave, it’s back up. Do you use the other login at all?

    1. GravediggerHebner

Totally forgot about that, I always come here first so it never occurred to me.

  3. Mr North Jersey

You just can’t make this shyt up.

  4. Mr. Mets Butler

Wow! Does it get any worse than this? This team is pathetic.

  5. Kingman 26

    HELP ME!!!!!!!!

Grave, I am listening to the bourbon right now. It is laughing at me.

  6. metsfan4decades

Well, I give you credit, Grave. Not sure I could have words to put this post together. By nice job. That graphic says it all.

This is by far the worst loss of the season for me so far. Absolutely unacceptable.

    Poor Krod…..

    1. trs86

Poor Mets fans. I am not getting paid 12 million to have Castillo blow it

      1. dirtysanchez

real…12 million dollars to catch a routine pop up….

        1. trs86

Well I was talking about Krod but Castillo? It’s now sunk cost.
Before I thought, you know he has been tough this year came back maybe the fans will lay off him. Now, his time in NY really needs to be over. Gotta take on another salary dump and get rid of him.

          1. dirtysanchez

            i am still speechless…

    2. dirtysanchez

      i agree 100%

    3. Mr North Jersey

I think because I didn’t expect to win this one It didn’t affect me as it did others plus Church’s not touching 3rd basically numbed me to any future blunders.

      1. trs86

This one is worse to me.

        1. Kingman 26

          Much, much worse.

  7. Kingman 26

Castillo looking like he wants to cry somehow makes it even worse.

Holy crap, did this really just happen??

    1. dirtysanchez

      i want to cry…

      1. Kingman 26

As I said, if I was capable of being speechless, I am pretty sure I would be right now.

      2. trs86

I had that look on my face in the car and I could tell my wife was about to say something. She thought better of it.

        1. dirtysanchez

lol my girlfriend called me and she said “i didnt want to bother you while you were watching your game, and now that it is over and i know how it ended…good night”

          1. gategem

My gf turned to me and said she could have caught that ball. She also asked why he threw to second as the winning run scored. I had no answer that didn’t use four letter words. So I thought better of it and sat there in silence.

  8. dirtysanchez

thanks grave. It was a smirk but thats the best i can do.

    TWO HANDS!!!!
unbelievable…now we will have to hear buck bring this up all day tomorrow.

  9. dentulous

How can we be optimistic when we blow games by not catching pop ups? I dont think I can get over this one.

    1. Kingman 26

Abyss, meet Met fans, Met fans, meet the abyss…..

  10. trs86

You guys are better than me on this one. I can’t watch it tomorrow. Gotta take a break.

    1. dirtysanchez

i am not sure i can either

    2. Mr North Jersey

      Stiff Upper Lip.

      1. Kingman 26

Mr North, my optimism was waning after the last two nights….tonight was too much.

And we have more AAA players on our roster.

I will catch some of it tomorrow, but we need to bounce back….we had a bounce back win snatched from us when it was already in the W column….

    3. metsfan4decades

Oh, how can you not watch? You might miss another new and interesting way they find to blow it.

And yeah, I’m about as optimistic as they come but I’ve got zero left right now. I’ll be watching tomorrow just to see how much guts I’ve got….

      1. Kingman 26

        MetsFan4, I agree 100%

Damn, how can it get worse than the last three nights?

        1. metsfan4decades

King, I’m almost afraid to watch how much worse it can get….

          1. Kingman 26

Me too MetsFan….this loss was as close to a literal punch in the face as I can imagine.

If we play so close and lose like this three nights in a row, what the hell is next?

    4. darknova306

I was watching the hockey finals at my friend’s place, but switched over to watch the last AB. Wish I didn’t. The thing is, I’ve been railing on our D for a while, so I’m not over surprised at this outcome.

    5. Mr. Mets Butler

Not sure I can watch tomorrow. I am so sick right now with this team. I need a break.

  11. tkfj

I dont care how this sounds, its a vent and I’ll proceed to vent. God Hates the Mets, need any more evidence, I sure as hell don’t. How many more conceivable ways can God stick the dagger in our hearts and destroy our hopes and even more importantly our wins. We lose in every conceivable way. We blow leads, we blow leads late, we make baserunning mistakes, we make errors, we blow saves, we blow leads in standings, there are somethings I’m forgetting here, beacuse we have honestly lost in every fashion over the past 3 years. I almost long for the days where I expected to lose most games, because its easier to stomach than this Bs. Make us a winner, make us a loser, stop making us gut wrenching losers, dashing our hopes in the most inconceivable way.

End. I don’t want to watch tommorows game, and I hope I can convince myself not to. I really hope I can keep the game off, because it will surely only bring more heartache.

    1. trs86

That’s not God doing that, that’s dumb ass players.

    2. tkfj

Oh and I’m on beer #1, this team has driven me to drink.

      1. trs86

        Congrats, many more to follow.

        1. tkfj

I wonder how much my 18 yr old liver can take, I’ll probably drink only 2 but that should numb me somewhat.

          1. trs86

LOL, you really are a rookie.

    3. darknova306

Well, with tomorrow’s starter, we’re losing almost automatically. This team is a joke. I expect to lost a lot more games this year, and frequently just like this one. I feel bad for K-Rod and Santana… they thought they were going to a contender, but they failed to realize it was the Mets….

    4. Kingman 26

God doesn’t give two craps about baseball.

      1. tkfj

Like I said I didnt care how it sounded, it was a vent. And if you don’t agree I know many Mets fans that do.

        1. Kingman 26

          Stupid ones.

        2. trs86

So GOD makes the players play like crap?

    5. GravediggerHebner

God must have been busy in 1969 and 1986.

      1. tkfj

He just gave you guys a break those 2 yrs. He was too busy with Bill Buckner.

      2. trs86

Grave, sorry about the login issue. It’s fixed.

      3. Kingman 26

Grave, thanks for being here to make what must have been a very depressing postgame post. It is appreciated.

And if God cared about baseball, he surely helped us in 1969 and in a couple of 6th games in the postseason in 86.

        1. GravediggerHebner

Within about 5 seconds of Castillo’s muff my brain went “two hands – good hands – Allstate” and I was stunned to find the graphic with the word “good” crossed out on the net. I don’t do photoshop, that image is out there already. Lucky me.

          1. gategem

Heb, nice wrap-up under adverse conditions. All we need is Dennis Haysbert. I bet he could have caught that popup.

          2. GravediggerHebner

Darned right he would’ve. He’s the first black President!

    6. Mr. Mets Butler

If Omar is GOD, then I blame GOD!

      1. darknova306

Omar is most certainly NOT God. God isn’t completely incompetent.

  12. Mr North Jersey

WE GO DIGITAL AT MIDNIGHT GUYS

  13. trs86

I said this earlier in the thread but I want to put it down here. This is the last straw in the Castillo piece of Mets history. He had done well to fight back and earn some respect. At this point he has become Heilmanized. He will never be successful with the Mets and now we have to just eat that contract and trade him for another salary dump.

    1. metsfan4decades

Yeah, I think he just sealed his fate tonight.

      1. trs86

I think the one thing that Omar could do that would help is to rid us of him somehow. It would brighten the load.

        1. GravediggerHebner

Given all the other roster issues I doubt “cleansing second base” is high on the to do list.

          1. trs86

Well if Omar determines that he can’t fix the teams real issues by trade why not make the dump?

          2. GravediggerHebner

I just guess that knowing his job is on the line he’s not going to deliberately remove starting players from the roster, at least not while Reyes/Delgado are out, without getting something noteworthy back, and I don’t see what Castillo brings back being noteworthy.

Now if he’s one player in a big multi player deal then sure, but what’s the likelihood of that?

    2. Mr North Jersey

Too late he is here for the season Minaya didnt eat his contract when he should b4 season and signed ODOG why bother now.

      1. trs86

I did not think it was a good idea to do it then and pay 26 million for 1 year of Hudson.
However, now with this freak occurrence we have to get rid of him.

    3. darknova306

Pretty much. This season is quickly becoming a disaster.

  18. GravediggerHebner

Mitch Williams is on MLB network saying that was Church’s ball and he should’ve come in and called off Castillo. Interesting angle.

    1. stickguy

from the replay, that would have been an awful long run, and no RF in the league probably takes it. THe ball did drift a bit, but toward 1st, not really out.

    2. metsfan4decades

Sorry, I’m not seeing how that could be Church’s ball. It was just past the infield grass.
And Jerry said something to that effect too – not that it should have been caught by Church but that it possibly should have. Man, he just does not like Church at all.
Sorry, that was all on Castillo. He was there, he had plenty of time, even if it did drift. He just didn’t use two hands.

      1. GravediggerHebner

I pretty much agree with you and Stick, I was mostly just noting the idea as it had not occurred to me at all. When he said it as they were showing the replay, Church was pretty far away, jogging diagonally toward CF. I suppose if he had run toward the ball instead of jogging off to the side, it’s at least possible, but not bloody likely. Bottom line, as you said – two hands.

  19. stickguy

I’m glad that I was at banquet all night and missed every aspect of this game. Although I knew it was bad when my sone texted while I was heading home to say Luis Castillo needed to be shot.

At least I have been consistant all year saying he needed to go. I demand an apology for all you former supports. Come on, you know who you are!

Might be too much to hope for with all the missing parts, but seeing a news flash that he got released would be like a dream come true.

This season is just bizarre, but I think it really boils down to a need to totally purge the roster of all the bad apples.

    Basiclaly, a cosmic high colonic.

Honestly, how much worse could they be cutting Castillo and playing Cora at 2B, and calling up Tejada to play SS. Would they really lose any more games? And it might be worth a couple to never have to see Castillo again.

At least my dream for the team is almost there. I wanted Delgado, Castillo, Schneider, Castro and Heilmann gone after last season.

Just please, don’t take on a ridiculous bad contract back, but heck, at this piont, they could almost use GM Jr.!

    1. trs86

I was and still in some ways am a Castillo supporter but much like Heilman he has burned the last bridge and needs to be dumped. I would not release him, I would try and get another salary dump that could help the team. Maybe an OF or #5 pitcher.

  20. stickguy

Oh, and send F Mart back down. Call up any live bat. Wily Mo would be fine. Just someone to tide us over,

    1. trs86

Agree also on bringing Pena up for Fmart, not enough ab’s for Fmart to stay up.

  21. Mr. Mets Butler

    ‘Fire Minaya’ t-shirts for sale!

    1. trs86

Eh, this season will determine it. I will give him until the end of the season to see if he has a direction for the the team.

  22. trs86

How about Castillo for Gary Mathews JR. Salary’s about even, get them to throw in a AAAA SS or something to balance out the cash.

    1. Mr. Mets Butler

I’ll take a keg of beer for Castillo at this point. He needs to be off this team.

      1. trs86

Agreed, but it will have to be in salary dump form for another salary dump. Thus we don’t want to get stuck with even more unless we think we could use it. Mathews JR could be an OK OF for us.

        1. stickguy

I mentioned him up above, but he is rally, really bad at this point. ALmost to the point of being a negative on the roster (as in worse than replacement level). In that case, you are better off just cutting Castillo.

Oh yeah, on Castillo, I thought after Thursday game that he should be banned form switch hitting. Make him bat RH all the time, even against RHPs.

          1. trs86

Stick his numbers and defense (up to this point) are not that bad and certainly better than just another AAA guy.

        2. Mr. Mets Butler

no you’re right… that would be the logical thing to do. Easier said than done though. I will gladly take Matthews Jr..

  23. tkfj

Oh FML…………Oh wallow wallow, not going to sleep tonight, jus gonna stere at the ciling and hope I don’t go to sleep. Or wake up and find out i wad dreaming. If I sleep im gonna dream of hurting Mr. Catillo.

    1. stickguy

Dude, if you are just 18 (that was you, right?) you need to lighten up. You have many years in the future to become an obsessive middle aged guy, waiting for that magical season. FOr now, enjoy being young, have fun, and rub the fact tht you are having fun in the face of all the old guys that don’t have any!
