ServPro Post Game: New York Mets 6, New York Yankees 2

Have the Mets been cleaned and restored?

Have the Mets been cleaned and restored?

With John Maine having been placed on the disabled list due to fatigue in his shoulder, and with Met fans suffering the fatigue of their favorite team’s tendency to find unique ways to lose games, Fernando Nieve was called on to take Maine’s slot in the starting rotation.

Nieve took the color out of the Yankees

Nieve took the color out of the Yankees

Not an ideal situation for a 26 year old who was in the minor leagues less than 2 weeks ago and had only made 1 relief appearance since being recalled to make his first major league start since June 2006.  But Nieve (1-0) threw 108 pitches over 6 2/3 innings, allowing only 2 runs, cleaning the stench of defeat from the Mets and restoring, at least for one day, the faith of their fans as the New York Mets defeated the New York Yankees 6-2.

"I was so afraid Fernando"

"I was so afraid Fernando"

It was a good afternoon to be named Fernando.  Along with Nieve, Fernando Martinez (3 for 4) and Fernando Tatis (2 runs scored, 1 RBI) formed the first trio of Fernandos to ever be in one major league teams’ starting lineup in history.  People with other names contributed as well.  Omir Santos drove in 3 runs with a double and a homer (4), and Gary Sheffield also homered (7).

Santos started the scoring for the Mets with a 2-run homer in the 2nd inning and the Mets never trailed.  Alex Rodriguez hit a solo homer (9) in the bottom of that inning to cut the lead in half, but in the top of the 5th the Mets scored 3 runs to give Nieve some breathing room.  Sheffield singled to drive in Carlos Beltran, Tatis just beat out a double play attempt for a fielder’s choice RBI and then Santos doubled in Tatis.  All of that scoring came at the expense of Yankee starter Andy Pettitte who surrendered 5 runs on 12 hits in 5 innings of work. Sheffield’s solo homer off Alfredo Aceves in the 7th was the Mets’ final run.  Derek Jeter singled in Melky Cabrera in the bottom of the 7th for the Yankees final run.

Rubber games can be fun

Rubber games can be fun

So at least for one day the Mets and their fans can feel restored.  The Mets go for the series victory in the rubber game Sunday afternoon when Johan Santana (8-3, 2.39) takes the mound for the Mets opposing A. J. Burnett (4-3, 4.89).

Well…I guess I’d say I am pleasantly surprised…but couldn’t get truly happy about today, due to last night. Honestly, the only smile I had all day was reading this wrap-up with the very apt and funny graphics. Gotta get them tomorrow. And, go Sox!

    1. rustyjr

I know i’ve been pissed until we won

  2. rustyjr

fernando nieve our new ace, this kid is going to surprise people. book it.

    1. GravediggerHebner

Ace might be taking it too far, but I think it’s fair to say that Nieve is exactly the type of guy that Omar acquires and then gets little credit for. Young pitchers that have not disappointed elsewhere but are still young. He brings them in and gives them a chance. If they work out, they’re cheap and under control for years. Perez, had his moments and still may (although no longer cheap). Maine, now maybe Nieve, perhaps Broadway.

      1. rustyjr

ok ok hes our number 2 guy lol

  5. GravediggerHebner

KRod just responded very appropriately to Brian Bruney. Kudos KRod.

  6. dentulous

K-Rod: Who the hell is Bruney? Someone in Double A? lmao

    1. rustyjr

i love that – he looked pissed – and honestly who is bruney to say that – thats a “know your role rook” kind of thing

      1. dentulous

it was awesome. He was like STFU n00b!

        1. rustyjr

he truley looked angry – i like that

          1. Mr North Jersey

When Krod said instead of going thru the papers tell him next time he is at Citi Fields to tell me in my face I nearly died laughing. He then said Bruney who? all I know is that he is always on the dl not even a year in the league LoL. AWESOME!!!

          2. dentulous

that will forever be and interview I remember. Too funny

          3. dentulous

he did. That got him heated! That is the fearlessness and competitiveness he brings to the team. I love that attitude too! Bruney is a tool.

          4. Mr North Jersey

“If it was somebody big, I might pay attention to it,” he said. “But somebody like that, a nobody like that, it doesn’t bother me.”

            I Love It!

          5. dentulous

excellent. Let me add that to my favorites!

          6. smooth

Krod made Bruney feel as small as an ant.

  7. dentulous

    K-Rod is the MAN!

    1. rustyjr

http://www.nleastchatter.com/ acta to be fired in DC… read here guys

    1. dentulous

too bad for acta. Nationals are a tough team to run.

  9. dentulous

“I don’t even know who that guy is. Somewhere in Double-A? I believe he hasn’t even pitched one full season. He’s always been on the DL. That’s all I know right now. He better keep his mouth shut and do his job and not worry about somebody else.”

Asked if he was surprised by Bruney’s comments, K-Rod shrugged.

“If it was somebody big, I might pay attention to it,” he said. “But somebody like that, a nobody like that, it doesn’t bother me.”

never will get old. K-Rod is the best move minaya has made.

  10. stickguy

now this is the way it’s supposed to be.

Maybe all this adversity will finally make the team mentally tough? So when they get some weapons for the stretch run, they will just steamroll over the league?

Just frustrating to see the Phils getting smoked already (although it is pouring here for the 2nd time today), and knowing the Mets should be in 1st by now.

Q: What could be better than a Met over yankee, Red SOx over Philly day?

    A: A 2nd one tomorrow! Go Johan!

    1. metsfan4decades

I hope they don’t call that game in Philly. Sox have a very good chance of winning that one.

  11. metsfan4decades

Nice come back win, guys. Nieve might be a very good pickup for us.

And KRod? I burst out laughing watching that interview. As he said, if it was someone big in the game, someone doing their job and doing it well, he’d have to respect it. But this guy?
He just flicked that off like a dead fly.

    You go, KRod.

The final knockout punch from Krod per Bart Hubbuch

    8:40 P.M. UPDATE) One last jab from K-Rod …

“If some guy comes out with that, somebody big like [Mariano] Rivera, somebody who’s been around and is good at what he does, I would respect that coming. But for some guy that I don’t even know who it is, that hasn’t even played a full year in the big leagues, that’s always been hurt? It doesn’t bother me.”

    1. ghostofshea

I was at my sisters babyshower and we still had the game on with half n half between team fans. Was fun. Good win. Nieve did his thing as did fmart as he is the met i am rootin for the most so he can be our breakout star. But. Shef, santos n company did their thing. Kudos to green too. N i didnt see that krod interview, which leads me to this…(to the moderators) i think it would be cool if ya could add video highlights if prohibited. That would be nice. But yea, good game.

  13. CaseStreet

glad the team got the win, wouldn’t want anyone here jumping off bridges
