If he ends up having surgery, expect this same picture with the caption "Shef going under the knife."
According to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post, Gary Sheffield expects to undergo an MRI exam either today or tomorrow. Following last afternoon’s 6-2 win over the Yankees, Sheff said he’s feeling pain behind his right knee. Sheffield is hitting .261/.381/.478 (BA/OBP/SLF) with 7 home runs and 24 RBI in 134 at bats this season. After his second consecutive game with a home run, can the Mets afford to send Gary to the DL?

We all knew it was just a matter of time. What gets me is that this announcement comes after he hit two homeruns in the first two games of this series. You would think he’s feeling better, though he did not look good running out that double the other day. If he goes on the DL, what’s next for this team? Geez…

I think I heard about the MRI before yesterday’s game. I sincerely hope he doesn’t have to go on the DL. Sheff as the DH in interleague play is looking pretty good right now.

This is paying the piper for using him as an everyday LF for so long. 1-2 days a week maybe you get by with, but there were reasons he had been a FT DH for so long.
But, if they used him up, at least he was cheap. ALmost a calculated risk (just keep beating him, knowing he might break, since they need4ed immediate production more than a LT bench bat).
If he goes down, unless there is a trade (not likely right away)), I bet you see Pena come up to be the bat off the bench and split time with F Mart.

I think Stickguy summed up my feelings on it pretty well. Ultimately if he does go on the DL I don’t believe the team will miss him a lot (at least not in an “on field” context) because he has proved that he’s a part time player at this stage.
