This Day In Mets Infamy with Rusty 6/15/09

Good Morning to all you beleaguered Met fans (thankfully I’m in New Orleans and I didn’t have to see yesterday’s debacle). But anyway this is a most infamous day in our history as you will see in a a little. So Grab a beer and enjoy
First off celebrating birthdays today are * Ken “not Rickey nor Steve” Henderson (1946)
* past his prime outfielder from the ’94 team – but great Dodger in his time Brett” I don’t give a damn” Butler (1957)
*reserve Catcher Dave Liddell (1966)
*Good backup first baseman and pinch hitter Tony ” bar” Clark (1972)
*current Mets reserve outfielder Jeremy “spoke in class today” Reed (1981)

Transactions:
New York Mets purchased Gene Woodling from the Washington Senators on June 15, 1962. – he went on to a less that stellar career

New York Mets purchased Bob”no friend of mine” Friend from the New York Yankees on June 15, 1966.

New York Mets traded Kevin Collins, Steve Renko, Bill Carden and Dave Colon to the Montreal Expos for Donn Clendenon on June 15, 1969. – On of the best trades we ever made for he was the missing piece of the world championship team in ’69

New York Mets traded Tom “Terrific” Seaver to the Cincinnati Reds for Doug “all glove no bat” Flynn, Pat”never reached his potential” Zachry, Steve ” can do Hendu” Henderson and Dan Stormin” Norman on June 15, 1977.

New York Mets traded Dave “Kong” Kingman to the San Diego Padres for Bobby ” the stache” Valentine and Paul Siebert on June 15, 1977. These 2 were possibly 2 of the the imfamous trades in Mets history because a egomaniacal M Donald Grant was trying to dump salary at all costs and him and our Franchise weren’t on speaking terms.Kingman said he wanted out if he wasn’t going to have his contract demands met either and so both were traded just before the deadline.

New York Mets traded Mike Phillips to the St. Louis Cardinals for Joel “Blood” Youngblood on June 15, 1977. – good jack of all trades player who is a folk hero to those of us who grew up with those late “70′s and early 80′s teams

New York Mets purchased Andy “Hassle” Hassler from the Boston Red Sox on June 15, 1979. – look at a picture of him AND Mike Pelfrey and they look like they’re seperated at birth

New York Mets traded Mike Bruhert and Bob Myrick to the Texas Rangers for Dock Ellis on June 15, 1979.

New York Mets traded Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey to the St. Louis Cardinals for Keith Hernandez on June 15, 1983. – One of the best trades we ever had – If there is a god let him bless Frank Cashen for this move

New York Mets sold Mike Jorgensen to the Atlanta Braves on June 15, 1983. sad to see him go but hey when you have “Mex” at first he was made expendable

New York Mets traded Jay ” Mr. Tibbs, Eddie Williams and Matt Bullinger to the Cincinnati Reds for Bruce Berenyi on June 15, 1984. Good pitcher too bad he never made it to ’86
And lastly Mo Vaughn has been sighted here so I better run and get a daquiri and a po boy before he eats and drinks this place dry

Damn, after the horror of this weekend, I forgot it was Seaver/Kingman AND Keith trade anniversary day–thanks for the reminder!

And enjoy New Orleans, which I know is easy to do!

I forgot how much earlier the trade deadline was in the old days. Not sure which I prefer, but 6/15 would certainly come in handy this year, if you want Omar to be making moves!
