Here’s the latest on our injured players. I swear, next we’ll be reading about how Mr. Met lost an eye while getting shot with one of those t-shirt cannons…Â
Â
Jose Reyes- (June 16) According to Foxsports ”Ken Rosenthal reports some in the New York Mets organization speculate SS Jose Reyes’ (calf) calf injury might have resulted from his switch from Nike to Under Armour shoes in Spring Training. Reyes dismissed the notion, though.”Â
…..(crickets)….. shoes…….(crickets)…….
Carlos Delgado - (June 11) According to Foxsports, “Delgado is on schedule.  Ben Shpigel, of The New York Times, reports New York Mets 1B Carlos Delgado (hip) is on schedule in his rehab from hip surgery. He has mostly been limited to riding an exercise bike and said his therapy will intensify in two or three weeks.”
ETA – Late July
JJ PUTZ - (June 10) According to Foxsports, “Putz was back in the clubhouse Wednesday, one day after he had surgery to remove a bone spur and fragments of bone from his pitching elbow. He is expected to start throwing in about six weeks and New York hopes the right-hander can return to games in 10 to 12 weeks.Â
Putz, who had his right arm in a sling, said he watched Tuesday night’s game from his couch and feels much better than he thought he would following surgery. He said he can already straighten his arm out more than he could before the operation. A former All-Star closer, Putz was acquired in the offseason from Seattle to be Francisco Rodriguez’s setup man. He was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday after going 1-4 with a 5.22 ERA and two saves.
Per Daily News,
“John Maine and Oliver Perez are due to square off Thursday in a controlled game in Port St. Lucie, Fla., involving Mets extended spring training players. Maine should be ready to be activated after that appearance, meaning only one more start for Fernando Nieve, Friday against the Rays. Perez should begin pitching in minor-league games after that. But we’re talking only 2-3 weeks before he returns if progress continues.
As for Billy Wagner, he told pitching coach Dan Warthenthat he could be pitching two innings in the major leagues in 30 days. Warthen says that’s waaaaay to quick, but the pitching coach expects the former closer to be with the Mets by mid-August.”
Ramon “Not Predro’s Brother” Martinez – (June 3) According to Foxsports, “Ben Shpigel, of The New York Times, reports New York Mets SS Ramon Martinez (finger) will miss at least six weeks and doctors advised him to undergo surgery to fix his fractured left pinkie.”
Angel Pagan - Placed on the 15 Day DL (groin) on June 2. Eligible to return today.

O.K., I’m resigned now to all the injuries that happened. As long as all make it back as planned with no setbacks (and I see not ETA for Reyes – sigh….) and no one else goes down, I’m hoping we’ll have a very good Aug/Sep.

I’m looking forward to Pagan. He’s a very solid bench player. He has some power, great speed and defense.

As well as a remarkable capacity to get injured when playing time presents itself. But when healthy, I agree with your assessment except I would change “great” to “good.”

I think he’s a very solid defensive OF with “very good” speed. From what Matt C has told us during the ST, Pagan is the most agile, fastest on short distance and highest jumper. Obviously he has great athleticism only if he can stay healthy.

He did once steal 62 bases in the minors, so I guess I can live with ‘very good.’ His speedy moves to the disabled list are undeniable.

AJ Burnett and Joba have made many major leaguers look overmatched. Jamie Moyer schooled him, but that can be expected also.
The reason I’d send him down is because he doesn’t even seem to be trying to drive the ball. He seems like he is trying to not strike out.

he is getting on top of the ball every time. I think he needs more polishing in AAA. I like him and i think he can be good but he needs to fix that on his swing. Like you said, he doesnt seem to be driving the ball

Yeah maybe. Or it could be Takahashi. We’ve only seen Switzer once and I heard that he did very well in minors as well, so he may get another chance.
I think Takahashi could be a good bullpen guy if used in a right situation and not as a LH specialist.

We lead the league with RISP! Pretty amazing. I really hope we weren’t over achieving the last couple of months with all these injuries and a let down is coming. If this doesnt happen and we stop making fundamental mistakes, which have cost at least 6 games, and stay within 3-4 back we CAN BE IN FOR A HELL OF A SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR!
I know its alot to ask these guys to do for a long span but we really should be at minumum tied for first place right now. I know all teams have bad losses and fans of all teams can point to pretty much every game they lose and say they should have won but we really legitmately have like 5 that were wins in the bag!
I guess my point is I hope this team continues to battle and we dont throw away anymore games or at least limit the amount. I know we are an injury (dont worry I knocked on wood)away with Johan from the season collapsing and the same can be said if Beltran or Wright go down but we have a great group and if we get healthy our bench isn’t too shabby either! Oh and imagine we add another bat lol

If they wind up out of the post season by 1 or 2 games I’ll worry about it then. Obviously it works for some, dare I say it works for many, but I just cannot enjoy a moment of baseball if I’m constantly focused on “uh oh this is gonna cost us.” Instead I focus on that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. If/when things end horribly, I have from the last day of contention to the first day of spring training to be all pissy about it. I just cannnot do it now.

If you can exist on a day to day basis that way then I can’t criticize it I can only say more power to you, but I can’t do it. Like the theme to “Diff’rent Strokes” says:

On today, the anniversary of Willie’s firing, I thought I’d pay tribute to the field general with a famous quote of his while arguing a call at home plate:
” “

Here are a few of my favorites, courtesy of thinkexist.com
“We make it hard for ourselves sometimes, … and we go to the heartbreak hotel a little too much.â€
“We’re just going through the process of learning how to play winning baseball. The bottom line is that we’re learning the hard way.â€
“The baseball gods are showing me a little bit of everything this year. We just seem to make a mistake at the most inappropriate time.â€
“I’m going to stop saying I’ve seen it all. Because every time I do, something else crazy happens.â€
“Maybe I should have handled that differently. I don’t know. I’m hoping a lot of the things I did now will help us in the future.â€
“Ideally, we’ll just see how it goes and play it by ear the rest of the way,â€

In all seriousness, I think Willie did a lot to change the attitude of the fan base and the team. You can argue the bunt/no bunt in Game 7 all you want. But a valid argument has been made on both sides. Say what you want, but he is a class act and I think he did well in his time here. We were a debacle before he got here. Who knows how much he had to do with it, but he was at least a part of the turnaround. The other major part we missed since 2006 is Uncle Cliffy. He had a productive year that year. He was a good Met.
GravediggerHebner
6/17/2009-12:42pm at 12:42 pm (UTC -4)
I’ll continue in the serious vein. I concur that Willie played a valid part in changing the culture and attitude of the whole thing. But so did Omar by signing Pedro and Carlos B.
But Willie had lost the team and it was time for him to go shortly after the last day of 2007. That he was still around IMO cost us greatly in 2008, because it wasn’t until roughly 70 games in that the team was able to breathe.
Had a different manager (anyone, not Jerry specifically) been running things from the start the team would’ve had a greater lead and by extension less of a likelihood that Wagner’s loss would’ve been so devastating. I don’t think they would have won the Series with that bullpen, but they would’ve had a big enough lead to limp into the post season, and then short series, who knows?

Food for thought. If Aubrey Huff was our 1B and Castillo our 2B, would every pop up to that side of the infield automatically be dropped? It’s a similar argument to if Beltran and Cindy Crawford mated. Would the mole be halfway?
