Clever. Too bad we’re not going to get that ‘Golden Fleece’.
Sigh……
Jerry’s comments were to strive for .500 ball until we get most back from the DL. Why can’t we strive for over .500 ball? What kind of message does that send to the team?
Jerry sounds completely defeated these days, just listen to him talk after games. I gave up on the season a while back, but I’m just a fan. I expect these guys to believe they can do it unless they’re mathematically eliminated. If he’s given up already, then I give up even more. :p One of the main differences between us and the Phills is that they expect to win, we just hope we win. That’s huge.
Did you hear him on wfan yesterday? he basically said he’s not counting on any of the DL players coming back and that the current lineup is not good enough. Mike kept saying they have been doing well considering the situation and Manuel kept saying “nah, not really”.
Wow, no I didn’t hear that. In all honesty, I think he’s pleading with Omar to get a big bat to help the lineup, while also resigning himself to the fact that it probably won’t happen and that we’re toast without one.
I’d say the lineup has done a decent job with the injuries: we’ve scored 14% of all of our baserunners, which is on par with the majority of the league.
Honestly, if the manager has given up, I feel that we’re toast regardless of any trades.
I agree. Phillies and any other teams are not going to play .500 till the AS break. So does that mean Jerry will be okay with 8+ games back on AS break?
I hope not. Hope to be within 5, worst case scenario. That means though we’ve got to take advantage of every strength we have left with the existing line up as well as play with good, sound fundies. Can’t keep giving up games due to errors or poor base running.
Sound fundies… I wish… We haven’t bumbled our way to a loss since Castillo’s error (the losses have been on other parts of the team), so hopefully that’s a positive trend…? (I’m really stretching for that one)
Can’t keep giving up games due to errors or poor base running.
Or like last night, due to no clutch hitting.

We’re not that bad with RISP in general, but we’re absolutely anemic with the bases loaded.
2009 Mets with Bases Loaded:
AVG .211 (28th in MLB)
OBP .256 (28th in MLB)
SLG .342 (28th in MLB)
2009 Mets with RISP & 2 outs:
AVG .232 (24th in MLB)
OBP .364 (14th in MLB)
SLG .324 (27th in MLB)
That needs to change. That’s pathetic. Want to kill a Mets rally? Just give us the bases loaded. (These stats are borrowed from Andrew Vazzano’s blog, theropolitans.com, cause it was a lot more convenient that sifting around to find them myself)

Not necessarily unclutch. We seem to do a lot better with RISP when there are less than 2 outs, unless the bases are loaded. I don’t like the terms ‘clutch’ and ‘unclutch’. I just think we have aspects of our offensive game that we really need to improve. That bases loaded GIDP last night was game changing.

But you are making our offense out to be the worst in the baseball. How about some other NL stats.
2nd in Hits with 600 behind Dodgers (Phillies 6th 576)
6th in 2B (Phillies 3rd)
1st in 3B (Phillies 9th)
HR — well, you don’t want to know
1st in SB (Phillies 4th)
4th in BB (Phillies 7th)
Last in SO (Phillies 10th)
1st in BA (Phillies 5th)
1st in OBP (Phillies 5th)
5th in SLG despite the lack of HRs
3rd in OPS
2nd in Sacrifice Hits
And these are stats despite the fact we play in Citifield and missing Reyes and Delgado in the lineup.

Not getting that clutch hit, while a lost opportunity, is not the same as giving the game away to me, due to errors and mental mistakes. Unfortunately, not always going to get that big hit when we need it. That’s part of the game. But for what is suppose to be a good defensive club, we seem to be giving up games and opportunities as we run ourselves out of an inning or give the opposition 4 outs in an inning…..
Damn a chance to cut it to 2 games back. Missed oppurtunity. I wonder how this year would have looked in the standings if we were healthy cause the phils are hangng around for us thus far! Keep it up Phils and you will regret it!! Now’s your time to put some distance between us….you better do it…
One thing about Phils is they are terrible at home. Their home record is 13-18 while 23-9 on the road. Mets are the only team with a winning record at home in NL East. As long as they keep on playing Home games, we’ll be okay. LOL
Typically I’d say that I’d rather beat the opposition without relying on their injuries, but given the ridiculously short end of the stick that we got this year, I think payback is fair and just. I’ll throw in a ‘whew’ here instead of a yay (I hate celebrating someone’s injuries – unless it’s J-Troll or Vicky).
From the “just in case you needed a reason to hate Jimmy Rollins file”:
Reason #1,327:
SS Jimmy Rollins is batting only .217, yet he still leads NL shortstops in All-Star balloting. In the latest voting results released Monday, Rollins leads Florida’s Hanley Ramirez by 87,460 votes, and with the Phillies outdoing the Marlins in the standings and at the turnstiles, it’s likely Rollins will keep that edge. Rollins deserved an All-Star nod in 2007, when he wound up winning the NL MVP award, but he didn’t make the team. Jose Reyes and J.J. Hardy represented the NL instead. Asked if this season will be payback, Rollins told the Phillies’ Web site, “Maybe people just like me.” Asked if he deserves to make the All-Star team, Rollins said, “It depends what numbers you’re talking about. If you want to talk All-Star Game, you pick the best at their position. I still fit that category.”
I’ll beat the dead horse and say, if Reyes said this, it would add fuel to the Philly fire and the Reyes is the showiestboater/hot dogiest hot dogger on the planet mystique. However, being that Rollins said it…
Also, I did a little investigating. Rey Ordonez in 2004 for Tampa was on pace for a better season than Rollins is at this point.
That’s hilarious. When you make Rey Ordonez look good offensively…. :p
