The Cool's Record: 5-1 Era: 4.33 K: 41 BB: 21 WHIP: 1.40

Mets Notes:

  • Though he wasn’t completely undone until reliever Jon Switzer allowed both of his inherited runners to score, Hernandez labored through 5 1/3 innings last Friday against the Yankees. He allowed seven hits and six runs in all, including three home runs — one more than he had served up in his previous seven outings combined. Hernandezs next start will come at another homer-friendly park, Camden Yards, where he is 2-0 with a 3.95 ERA for his career.
  • David Wright’s 11-game hitting streak was snapped with an 0-for-5 effort, but he’s still batting .397 on the road and .357 overall this season. The Mets have alternated wins and losses on the first five games of their swing, and will go with Livan Hernandez to close out the trip. The right-hander looks to rebound from a 9-8 loss to the New York Yankees on Friday when he allowed six runs and six hits—including three homers—over 5 1-3 innings.
  • Hernandez is 3-1 with a 3.94 ERA in five career starts against the Orioles. Huff is 5 for 8 with two homers when facing him. Nick Markakis is just 1 for 7 lifetime versus Hernandez, but matched a career-high with four hits Wednesday. The right fielder is 6 for 8 with a homer, two RBIs and a stolen base in the series.

Orioles Notes:
  • Berken saw his second rough outing in a row in his last start. The right-hander lasted just 4 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits. He got into an early deficit by allowing a two-run home run in the first inning in his last start against Atlanta, and has seen his ERA go from 2.25 at the end of May to 7.32 in two starts in June.
  • Highly touted rookie Matt Wieters went deep for the first time and knocked in the first two runs of his career. The Orioles’ catcher was batting .234 (11 for 47) with no RBIs in his first 13 games since being called up from Triple-A Norfolk on May 29.
  • Baltimore rookie right-hander Jason Berken will try to get off to a better start than he did in a 7-2 loss to Atlanta on Friday. He allowed a single to Nate McLouth and a two-run homer to Yunel Escobar to lead off the game. Berken has lost his last three starts since winning his major league debut May 26 .

I am raising rent to 325 ad clicks a day.

  2. stickguy

I know it’s still early, but man, this game has all the earmarks of a 2008 loss.

DW and Sheff spit the bit again in the 4th.

    amazing.

    1. stickguy

Cool. Once again the nervous nellie hex comes through!

This is a much more resiliant team than last years.

and who would beoieve it, but thank god for Livan!

      1. Kingman 26

And thank the Lord for Castillo!

I know you were about to write it; just saving you the trouble…

        :-)

Ah, this season finds new ways to disappoint!!

    UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. metsinnats

      UGH!!!! is right.

Just took a break from work and refreshed the CNNSI play-by-play. Now I’m gonna return to a couple of hours of work in a sour mood.

At least Franky took the pressure off of Castillo for the drop by blowing this save on his own.

told u king…its just unbelievable…i guess my mental state is not important to the mets. what a shame….this is not good…philly is hanging around dor us for how long? 5 and 10 this month and we had a chance to pick up a game. i know there is really no good time to blow a save but cmon!!!

      1. Kingman 26

Yeah, did not realize we were 5–10 till Ojeda said it.

Very, very disappointing loss, but cannot get mad at KRod.

What was their pitcher’s ERA before the game?

Damn, I was counting on us being 3 out.

And now Jerry is laughing in the postgame.

I love this team, and I like Omar, but I am seriously groing to HATE Jerry and his Dr Hibbert from the Simpsons laugh after this horrid loss.

He is seriously laughing with the media right now!

        1. Kingman 26

Oops, counting on us being 2 out…

  4. tkfj

More pathetic losses for this sad, pathetic team. Way to go Frankie you fricken twat, now we know why the Angels let go of you. Just like all the other Mets you have no intestinal fortitude.

Tell me why this team isnt in first place, well because they focking choke. They choke games away, seasons away, in every conceivable manner. Just when you think it cant get worse, it does. Every focking time it does.

Should have swept or at least taken 2 of 3 against the focking O’s, but Nah that aint the Mets style, it aint the Jerry Manuel swag. So they choke games away. “It happens” Yea it happens, Yea too far often it focking happens.

    End.

    1. Kingman 26

Oh chill the hell out and take this drivel to Metsblog.

KRod has been AMAZING, and has saved 18 of 19 in reality.

The team is not in first due to injuries number one and bad fundamental play, number two.

How about the offense not scoring more off of a guy who stunk this year?

Come on man, clues are all around us—grab one!!

      1. tkfj

Sure blame the offense, when you just used that as a reason as to why the team isnt winning. Can’t have it both ways.

Yep you can blame fundamentals for the Murphy game against the Marlins, and for the Castillo Yankee flub. But you can’t blame fundamentals on a part of the team, the bullpen that has no excuse not to do its job. What excuse is their? 4-2 lead with 6 outs to go and the bullpen flubs it, screws the pooch.

It’s time to hold people accountable for their play, and stop using excuses, weak excuses to cover for this loss.

        Goats:
Frankie: been great but oh well didnt do your job.
Wright: Is Katy Perry the theme song to your life, your hot then your cold, and when your cold, there aint any production.

        1. Kingman 26

Cannot expect KRod to have zero blown saves—how often has that ever happened?

I agree that in many ways this is pathetic, but seriously TKFJ, how many games out would we be without KRod this year?

Wright and KRod are about the ONLY guys who we should not be mad at, followed by Beltran and Johan.

This year is truly disappointing, but KRod is perhaps the guy who deserves the LEAST blame for it.

          1. saltygary

KROD is the MVP of the team. Without him this team would be 10 games out right now.

          2. Kingman 26

            Agreed 100%.

          3. tkfj

I agree I was initally too harsh because my blood was boiling. Frankie is the man, Wright and Beltran have been great but yu can’t excuse the fact that Wright and Frankie didnt come through tonight. No excuses.

          4. Kingman 26

Sorry if I was harsh….but we need more than three guys to step it up.

          5. tkfj

No you are totally right. I shouldnt be allowed to post after games, I’m liable to say stupid crap. You are 100 percent right.

        2. saltygary

          How old are you?

          1. tkfj

IDK, young enough to be your son?

    2. saltygary

I think you need to find a hobby dude. Too much anger.

You are right,”pathetic losses for this sad, pathetic team”. Losing is in this teams makeup and it’s a shame. Ever since Beltran struck out at that curveball in the playoffs, this team remembered how to lose and forgot how to win.

  5. Joe R

this is starting to become the perfect storm im afraid. we are going to lose a fair share of games simply because we dont have the talent on the field but in order to stsy in it you have to win the games u should. we havent!! i mean like 5 in the last 2 weeks. so my question is now do the losses come that we lose simply due to lack of talent? if this happens and im afraid it probably will how many games out will we be?? u know philly after being swept is going to win a few lol. missed our chance again!!

    1. Kingman 26

The next ten days are ten games with the Rays, the Cards and the Yanks.

As Steve Martin said in The Jerk “Roll the ugliness!”

      1. Joe R

very sad….i mean 2 out then its ok when we drop back to 4. but now a 4 game losing streak all of a sudden its 6-7….jeez very tough to continue to battle like we are. not cashing in is going to kill us!

  6. tkfj

Ok I’ll focus on the positives.

    1. We managed to gain a game this series. Yay, thx Blue Jays, now its your turn O’s to help us out. Honestly, I will take solace in the fact that we have made up any ground during this stretch. A battle for whoever sucks worse.
    2. Skankees lose 2 of 3 to the Nats. Worse than blowing a game, I guess.

    1. tkfj

      3. Watching the game on MLB Gameday. Didnt have to witness debacle, won’t watch highlights.
      4. Home Citi Home.

    2. trs86

Why can’t you be rational like this all the time?

  7. gategem

K-Rod was due for a bad performance. You forget about it and move on. What you don’t forget is that with Wright now slumping this lineup can successfully extend the career of any opposing pitcher. Now this is pure speculation on my part but based upon what I have read and what we witnessed over the off-season it’s possible that the Wilpon’s will not (or can not) extend the budget to where Omar can make a trade to accept someone’s salary dump. That would negate what appears to be the only way Omar can make a trade without sodomizing the Mets minor league system.

    1. trs86

Nah, I don’t think that is the case. They have said and he has said he has money.
Just waiting for bigger fish or the price to come down one.

  8. stickguy

and with that game, I give up officially on the season.

    RIP.
