Casey and Joe Torre I thought always proved the point that the difference between a likable doofus with no particular in game managerial skills, and a genius manager that wins the WS, is the right talented players on the field. Throw Cholly into that mix too, although he seems to be better than you think (from the corn pone accent).

Anyway, big game today. If the Mets rebound and take today’s game, a successful series. Then move on to the next one (Rays?) and take 2-3 there too.

Keep doing that, and they can be in position to catch or pass the Phils in 2 weeks. Big 3 game series over the 4th of July weekend. THen the Mets don’t see them again until late August, when hopefully they will be loaded for bear and on a rampage.

Luckily, Jason Berken has been pretty bad for the Orioles. Hopefully, Livan can keep the ball in the park today.

Agreed. If we can even keep this distance at the All Star Break, I think that is a huge morale booster for this team.

4 games over at the ASB, then 14 over the rest of thw way, = 90 wins. That should be good enough for at least the WC, if not the division.

          1. QnsNative718

Really shouldnt be aiming for a WC. Got some tough teams in the Central. Plus we’re assuming that Delgado and Reyes are going to come back and contribute. Delgado is 37 and has a tendency to start slow/ lose bat speed. We really shouldnt be putting too much hope in him.

          2. Kingman 26

90 wins = 57–42 the rest of the way.

            That ain’t happenin.

            1. QnsNative718

Nope…Not unless we do something about it.

            2. Kingman 26

              And soon….very soon….

              Next 10—Rays, Cards and Yanks.

      3. DNDJohan aka kistics

Agreed. We need to capitalize on wins against bad pitching. Hopefully Livan will be tricky on these young hitters.

      4. Kingman 26

Casey was a complete idiot who was a HUGE failure before and after the Yanks as a manager in several places. His Yankee teams were the greatest teams in baseball history. As Tom Cruise said in Tropic Thunder, a nutless monkey could have won with those teams.

The Lord himself could not have won with the teams Torre had with the Mets, and he did not do that badly with the Braves and Cards. Did Torre’s Yank teams win with overwhelming talent or incredibly solid fundamental play when they won their WS titles?

And how can anyone criticize Charlie M?

I guess my disappointment is overwhelming my judgment maybe, but we play like little leaguers in the field and on the bases. That is on the manager, not matter what anyone says.

        1. QnsNative718

I concur 100%. A guy with the IQ of Peter Griffin would’ve won a few World Series with those Yankee teams of the 90′s.

I hope Feliciano does not pitch today. He did not look good at all last night. I think Gary or Keith mentioned that he’s been used 7 of last 9 games. He should have taken the night off last night. I would have gone to Switzer last night. I know it was a tied game and against the big bats, but Feliciano really needed a night off and Phillies were losing big anyways. Why not see what Switzer is all about?

I’m just afraid that Feliciano and KRod have been used so much of late that they might not be as effective come 2nd half.

      1. stickguy

or how about just letting Parnell finish the inning? He was pitching fine, and si supposedly the “8th inning guy” (although I still hate these labels), meaning he has to be able to pitch to both sides of the plate.

ALthough at this piont, Jerry seems to have gone entirely situational (I think he is afraid for his job, so is going ultra conservative by the book so he can’t be held accountable).

Hey, if you take the safe route, and it doesn’t work, you can deflect the blame, right? So pretty soon he will go L/R with K Rod and DW too I expect!

        1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Well, I didn’t mind going with the Lefty match up last night. Parnell has been terrible against the LH and it would be best for his confidence level to end with easy out. So, I didn’t have a problem with that. But I did have a problem with going with Feliciano instead of Switzer.

Worst case with Switzer is you give up 2 runs to Huff (which Feliciano did) or if Switzer let both guys on base, you can bring in Green in that situation (who always can make double play happen).

        2. QnsNative718

You cant really blame Jerry in that situation. Tied ball game. Got some lefties on deck with some pop. You gotta lefty who’s been murderin lefties. You put him in there. It didnt work out but you cant get em all…

          1. dirtysanchez

i agree qnz…cant fault him for that call

      2. QnsNative718

Wasnt Felicano the most used reliever in MLB last yr?

        1. QnsNative718

          *Feliciano

        2. DNDJohan aka kistics

          I don’t know…

        3. dirtysanchez

if not the most used definatly top 5

        4. DNDJohan aka kistics

He lead the league in games played last year (86) but his innings pitched were lower than ’07. This year, he’s also leading the league in games played. But he’s going to shatter his career highs in IP. He has pitched 27.2 innings with 99 games to go. His career high in IP was in ’07 with 64.0

Based on my calculation he’s on pace to 69.0 IP

          1. QnsNative718

Nice work.. GKR made the statement that Feliciano has been used more often against lefties this yr where he’s excelling. The last couple yrs he’d face both lefties and righties and would get hit up by righties.

      3. dirtysanchez

Which are valid concerns…but i cannot fault manuel in a tied game using feliciano to get a lefty…he has been money with that.

        1. QnsNative718

Exactly. He’s not superman and Markakis and Huff arent scrubs.

        2. QnsNative718

Dirty, which avatar appears by my name?

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

            your mug

          3. dirtysanchez

the picture with your face…im on IE though

        3. DNDJohan aka kistics

I would agree with you in any other game. But Feliciano was used 7 of 9 games. I think that’s why he seemed off last night.

My point is that we won the first game and Phillies were losing big. At the worst Switzer doesn’t get both guys out and bring in Green to face the rest. Feliciano needed a day off.

I bet ya that he’ll get a day off today, which forces Jerry to go with Switzer to face Markakis and Huff.

          1. stickguy

Or livan pitches 8 innings in a mets blow out, and it makes no difference!

            1. DNDJohan aka kistics

              Yes! You are right!

    3. stickguy

rumor has it that Ibanez is going on the 15 day DL. he has been limping around with a sore achilles. It sucks to get old. Trust m, I know.

And without even looking at the related transaction, I will predict they call up John Mayberry Jr., and he hits at least 8 HRs while Raul is out!

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

That’s a great news for us. Not only Ibanez produced big time for the Phillies, he was a spark for the team too.
