What Mets Fans are NOT Talking About

Don't have a clue why I picked this but why not? Whooooooo!!!!

Don't have a clue why I picked this but why not? Whooooooo!!!!

So for the last 2 days I have tried to come up with my normal “What Mets Fans are Talking About”, the problem I am having is that well everyone continues to talk about the same things over and over again.  Hold out until we get our guys back, Omar please make a trade, Mets blow an opportunity.  So instead of rehashing that same theme again, lets take a step back and see what Mets Fans are NOT Talking About.

Mets fans are not talking about the fact that Jermey Reed is not playing but Fmart is. Look there is no doubt that Fmart has more potential than Reed.  But why are we trying out potential when we need consistantcy?  If you were the manager which one do you play?  The guy with a .313 BA over 67 PA or the guy batting .207 over 66 PA?  Forget potential, forget the argument that if Fmart is here he has to play.  Most of us say the only reason he is up is because there was no one any better.  That may be the case but why is he playing over people more deserving?  I know Reed can’t be an everyday player, but he has been very good this year and does not deserve to ride the pine while a kid struggles to learn to play at the MLB level.  My hopes is after Inter-league, Fmart goes down and Reed becomes Sheff’s caddy.

Figueroa Named IL Pitcher of the Week last week with a 1.98 ERA and 16 K’s  in two starts.  Redding could hear footsteps.  Figgy at this point offers more to the team that Taka, especially with his ability to pitch to RH and LH.

Mets DL problems continued into AAA. According to the Bison’s MILB site “Valentin becomes the eighth Bisons player currently on the disabled list. RHP Dillon Gee, INF Andy Green, OF Bobby Kielty, INF Mark Kiger, RHP Carlos Muniz, C Mike Nickeas and INF Argenis Reyes are all currently on the team’s DL. Buffalo has already lost 223 man-games to injury this season.”  So at what point can we blame organizational philosophy here?  Is it possible that we are just too sensitive to Mets info and this stuff happens to every team, bad luck or are there theories to blame?
What else are Mets fans NOT talking about?  Sound off here:

Great idea and great pic of Ric!

Reed has been hitting well, but my guess is that this would quickly change were he to play more…his career offensive stats are not that great, and he is very Endy-like—great as a backup, not so much as a starter.

Well, you know where I stand on injuries…our guys are not in shape in Florida in the spring, and if the major league team does not diagnose injuries quickly, who knows what is going on in the minors.

Regardless of how the rest of the season goes, even if we win it all and Omar and Jerry are here for ten years, we need new doctors and trainers, and the Buffalo DL stats seem to point this out even more strongly.

    1. Kingman 26

I see you were not suggesting Reed start; I just think his offense is maximized the less he plays….he is a good defensive replacement and pinch-hitter….

      1. trs86

Yeah, but I think he could be a good Sheff caddy for now especially.

When I saw that you were doing this particular post I just assumed you would mention Oliver Perez’ outing in it, since no one is talking about that either.

    1. Kingman 26

Yeah, I mentioned that in the last thread…he did quite well:

Perez, on the disabled list since May 7, threw 48 pitches in three shutout innings of an extended spring training game Thursday at the Mets’ rehab facility. He gave up three hits and one walk, and struck out five in the pain-free performance that came after a recent setback.

    2. trs86

I was going to, but when I got to it the sportsyder was full of OP stories so…

      1. GravediggerHebner

C’mon, when has the fact that 72 other Met related blogs and news outlets were covering the same thing stopped us before? We might as well hang a “going out of business” sign on the next Breaking News Front Page…

        1. trs86

Nah, it’s just the title of the post was What Mets fans are NOT talking about. LOL

  3. stickguy

Bison news is old. Reyes has returned from the DL.

Figgy was the first 35 YO player of the week since (drum roll please) Mike Defilice last year. Mike, BTW, is now managing in the Mets system (Kingsport is about to start their season with him at the helm).

We could talk more about the perception of Jerry Manuel from his recent pressers. Is he a realist? Has he given up? Will the team accept medioctiry, since the boss has basically told them they aren’t good enough to win?

I agree with you about F mart. If the rest of the team was healthy but Sheff had gone down, and they wanted him with no pressure, fine. But with too many other weak links, this wasn’t the time to get his feet wet (although IMO it will pay off next year).

I honestly don’t think Sheff can start anymore (maybe 1 day per week?) He needs to go back to a PH role (which he did well). Call up Wily Mo, send F Mart down, and let Reed/Pena platoon. What the hell, everyone else on the team is doing it!

Also great news that Ollie pitched well, with no pain. Not sure what to think about Maine though. Maybe no pain but “something” is the best he will do? But somehow I think we will be hearing about them going back in for another look soon.

    1. trs86

Considering how many big hits Sheff is getting, don’t you think 1 day a week is extreme?

      1. stickguy

        maybe 2 then..

It is more about do you want to kill him off now, or keep him healthy in a bench/part time role?

My point was that I just don’t think his legs/body will stand the rigor of being a close to everyday OF at this point.

Hell, the Mets should dangle him to AL teams that need a decent RH bat for DH. He comes cheap, and can still hit (at least when he isn’t limping around in LF)

        1. Kingman 26

          Trade Shef? Seriously? For what??

  4. mrose

    weee phils get swept

  5. stickguy

    Phils lose again.

Man, they stink at home this year. Good thing (for them) they won the WS last year, or they would be getting boo’d something fierce!

  6. CaseStreet

No ones talking about the Magic Number. Any takers?

No? Okay, how about my guys Alex and Luis?

    Like stickguy said, “They’re Perect!”

Those were Happy Days, yours and mine

    2. GravediggerHebner

Here’s some Luis love that I posted in the previous thread:

He leads the NL in lowest percentage of pitches outside the strike zone swung at while being 2nd in the league at percentage of making contact with pitches outside the strike zone swung at.

Leads the league in percentage of contact made with any pitches swung at.

      1. CaseStreet

Thanks for the support. Ur like my favorite bra.

        1. GravediggerHebner

Unfortunately I also smell like your favorite bra. Or is that fortunately?

          1. CaseStreet

Despite what others may have said, I don’t go around smelling people’s underwear.

          2. GravediggerHebner

            So this wasn’t you?

            LMFAO!

This guy has a great sense of humor:

Calm down – I don’t like the smell of the poo (fart puffs or actual skidmarks) I just like the smell of furrgina. It’s a very warm smell & not fishy at all like my friend Bob says. Of course you have to shrink wrap or zippo bag the knickers if yo want to have a chance at 1 month old smelling. Mmmmmm

          4. GravediggerHebner

I’m inclined to believe the whole thing is fiction, but brilliant manipulative fiction. The various seemingly real reactions are almost as priceless as the initial “cry for help.”

        2. CaseStreet

um, meant bro. ur my fav, bro.

          1. trs86

            LOL

          2. Kingman 26

            HAHA!

          3. GravediggerHebner

Oh, you were just expressing it Jamaican stylee. Tru, tru.

      2. stickguy

that’s just because he is very selective about which pitch he hits for a weak GB to a MI. His entire offensive game plan is trying to milk a walk, so any smart pitcher would just lay 3 down the middle for an automatic out.

        1. trs86

          So why don’t they?

          1. stickguy

Must be some kind of honor code (like the Mafia has). They don’t want to embarrass him by doing it.

It might be a slight exaggeration, but theres no piont in throwing him stuff off the plate since he won’t hack at it (like Church does), so 2 FBs on a corner and you are up 0-2.

besides, hitting lefty, 3 meatballs down the pipe and I bet he still can’t get it out of the IF.

He needs to hit RH only if nothing else.

          2. Kingman 26

“He needs to hit RH only if nothing else.”

Now THAT idea I love….he hits with SO much more authority, and it is not like he is legging out tons of hits from the left side…

          3. trs86

IF and When Reyes comes back this is a great idea.

    3. stickguy

Now I know your messing with me. Better be careful here… j/k. But I still can’t wait for Luis to go away. There has to be a better solution.

  7. GravediggerHebner

Wow, one 3 hit game and suddenly Murph can bat 2nd again.

    Cora, ss
    Murphy, 1b
    Beltran, cf
    Wright, 3b
    Sheffield, dh
    Church, rf
    Santos, c
    Martinez, lf
    Castillo, 2b

    1. CaseStreet

      Jerry, going w/ da gut.

      Wonder what that sounds like.

      1. trs86

I wonder if I could forward my email to him and Reed would hit 8th?

        1. CaseStreet

Only if you pretend to be his gut.

trs: Jerry, this is your gut speaking.

Jerry: Yo what’s up gut? I put Murph in the 2 hole just like you told me to.

trs: Um, yeah. I forgot to tell you to play Reed in LF. I’ve got a feeling about him.

Jerry: Ooh, thanks gut. If you’ve got a feeling, then I’ll make the change right now.

trs: Jerry, I also have a feeling that you should let me do the coaching from now on.

          1. trs86

LOL, in game I think I might actually be better. LOL

          2. GravediggerHebner

For some reason reading this short play prompted the theme from Fat Albert to run through my head.

          3. Kingman 26

            LOL to ALL of you!!

  8. stickguy

heres a topic: Can the Phils keep it up if their offense goes down?

Meaning, they play the same guys every day. Unlike the Mets, with a rotating cast and platoons.

The Phils bench really sucks other than hitting.

They have Dobbs and Stairs, who are really just PHs at this point (Dobbs I think can play a little 3B). ANd Bruntlett is a Super Joe type. Then they have a BU catcher. And 1 more guy I don’t remember.

Basically, they are built to have the same guys play daily, and if they start going down, they don’t really have replacements on hand. Mayberry had to come up, since they had no other viable OFs on the roster I don’t think.

Wonder what that team would look like if Howard and or Utley went to the DL, and they had to start Dobbs or Bruntlett every day?

    1. GravediggerHebner

Like poop? But seriously I thought they had some wunderkind middle infielder ready to go but being held back by Rollins/Utley, they’d probably just call him up (Marson?) if Utley went down. Howard I just don’t know enough about their system to say.

      1. stickguy

Marson is the catcher. DOnalds (IIRC), maybe Donaldson, is an IF that gets mentioned in trade talks.

I don’t believe he is setting the world on fire in AAA, and right now I’m almost positive they are both hurt.

But anyway, what’s the better plan? Have starters then call up a rookie if they go down, or have so level of viable replacements availabe instead?

        1. GravediggerHebner

You’re right, Jason Donald. I think the better plan is some combination of viable replacements and rookies. No team, despite the crying of many at the old blog this winter, has “quality starters” as back ups for every position, it’s just not possible. The Phils may have gambled that their starters would stay healthy. They narrowly avoided having Utley out to start the season (his comeback speed was miraculous as I recall) and I believe Ibanez was an iron man of sorts in the AL. I won’t cry if the Phils lose anyone of note for any length of time. Happens to us all the time, then when we don’t quite make it, we’re ‘chokers.’ Would certainly be fun to watch them choke away being defending champions.

    2. stickguy

I just checked (I need a hobby..). They are going with an Omar special: 3 catchers!

so the bench is a jack of all trades (bruntlett) that can’t hit, Dobbs who is marginal in the field (3B I think), Stairs who is 40+, and 2 BU catchers.

Man, talk about a team that has to stay helathy! ANd you thought Omar didn’t do a good job with Depth.
