It appears that sane fans have finally gone to the voting booths again as Jimmy Rollins is temporarily out of the lead for the Short Stop start. Hanley Ramirez who is likely the most deserving shortstop on the NL ballot has taken a lead of about 150,000 votes after a week in which a slightly over .200 batter had somehow been leading in that position. There are no other major updates to be found, and most positions appear to be all but locked up. The main races left are at short stop and for the last outfield spot between Carlos Beltran and Alfonso Soriano. I’d be very surprised to see any other 1st place changes for other positions, but you never know with the campaigns some teams will do.

A replacement would be selected. It would not default to the next highest vote getter.

Crazy stat mentioned on the broadcast this weekend. Mets catchers collectively lead all other teams’ catchers in RBI. Even more scary, the Mets catchers have also driven in more runs than any other position on the Mets.
That’s right; Schneider/Castro/Santos have driven in more runs that Wright, Beltran and Sheffield/Murphy/Reed/F-Mart (in LF).

I saw that. This is the year that I finally stop believing in stats as a predictor. If you told me the Mets would lead the league in hitting RISP, OBP, and Average, I would think we’d be up by 10 already. Nothing is as it seems these days.

I love stats as much as the next guy (which includes you, saber and some others here) but I agree with you that stats like these give serious fodder to those who don’t appreciate them.

6/22/2009-3:17pm at 3:17 pm (UTC -4)
yea they mentioned it the other day…but i believe that they meant it position wise. Like the Cather position has driven in more runs than the 1b position or 3rd base position. Theres were 3 people manning Catcher but what it says is that they have been the most reliable guys with ducks on the ponds
sabermetrician
6/22/2009-3:20pm at 3:20 pm (UTC -4)
Yeah, you’re correct it is position wise and that’s how Wanny is using it. He’s saying that they have out “RBI’d” each position. Pretty shocking actually.

6/22/2009-3:21pm at 3:21 pm (UTC -4)
Both these things are facts: The Mets catcher position has driven in more runs than any other teams’ catcher position in the NL; and the Mets catcher position has driven in more runs than any other position on the Mets.

Mets RBI by position, from baseball-reference.com:
C – 48
CF – 42
1B – 42
3B – 40
LF – 31
SS – 27
RF – 22
2B – 16
PH – 8
P – 7
DH – 6

I’m surprised LF is so low. I think between that and David’s lack of power we’ve really missed out on a lot of runs that we should expect to be scoring. That said we’re only 2 out despite this “upside-down” picture.
DNDJohan aka kistics
6/22/2009-3:29pm at 3:29 pm (UTC -4)
That’s why we need a big bat. LF and RF would need to be much higher

Here it is broken down by batting order slot (regardless of defensive position:
4th – 51
5th – 49
7th – 47
3rd – 37
8th – 26
6th – 24
2nd – 22
1st – 21

24 RBI in the sixth spot sounds woefully deficient.
GravediggerHebner
6/22/2009-3:36pm at 3:36 pm (UTC -4)
Yup, that’s what stood out to me as well. Probably negatively impacts the 5th spot too, being so weak at 6th.

6/22/2009-3:55pm at 3:55 pm (UTC -4)
how about 37 in the 3rd spot
wannybackstra
6/22/2009-3:59pm at 3:59 pm (UTC -4)
That’s a little easier to understand without Reyes in the lineup.
The sixth hitter, however, is batting with the high OBPs of Wright, Sheff and Beltran on base.
GravediggerHebner
6/22/2009-4:05pm at 4:05 pm (UTC -4)
I blame that more on the top 2 spots in the lineup not getting on base.
Without a healthy Reyes, the top 2 batters should always be Cora and Castillo (in whatever order, doesn’t matter). Pagan, Murphy and FMart were in those spots too often, and didn’t get on base enough. To me it’s the batting of Murphy 2nd that stands out as bad.

6/22/2009-3:40pm at 3:40 pm (UTC -4)
Yeah, he’s on the ball right now. Rightfully, to a degree, defending the team as ravaged by injury and suggesting that if Beltran has to sit out, that there’s no sense in trading the farm.

I read earlier today that it was Switzer down, Broadway up, but it was written as an ‘unconfirmed’ story. Now that it’s Takahashi down, I don’t know yet if that’s instead of or in addition to Switzer.

6/22/2009-4:25pm at 4:25 pm (UTC -4)
I really hope Broadway is not up — he’s pitched terribly in AAA and needs to be left alone to figure things out.
Adam Bostick has pitched well so far this season as a reliever. I suspect he might get the next shot as Feliciano’s left handed caddy. He was not good the last few seasons as a starter and has had some injuries along the way.
Roy Merritt could come up from AA, I suppose, to fill that role but I highly doubt it.
Kunz has pitched better in AAA and is on the 40 man. I’m really not impressed with him. Dessens is another candidate from AAA.
And, of course, Figgy is always a possibility.

6/22/2009-4:27pm at 4:27 pm (UTC -4)

Here’s what Adam Rubin says:
Breaking news: Carlos Beltran may be headed to the disabled list with an ailing right knee. That would allow the Mets to return Fernando Martinez to the majors despite spending less than 10 days with Buffalo.
UPDATE: The Daily News has learned that lefthanded reliever Pat Misch and outfielder Fernando Martinez are headed to the Mets, replacing Ken Takahashi and, seemingly, Carlos Beltran. Beltran must be headed to the DL or Martinez could not return so soon.
Two sources told the Daily News that Elmer Dessens was supposed to be called up, in place of Nick Evans, but the Mets may have backed off the move.
