Mr. Met joins the Mets 25 man DL team!

Mr. Met joins the Mets 25 man DL team!

per Adam Rubin:

Carlos Beltran may be headed to the disabled list with an ailing right knee. That would allow the Mets to return Fernando Martinez to the majors despite spending less than 10 days with Buffalo.

If you see any updates, please let us know.

by mrose:

According to David Lennon and Bart Hubbach on twitter, the following moves were made:

Beltran goes to the 15 day DL

Fernando Martinez back to the Mets

Elmer Dessens is called up from AAA

Pat Misch is called up from AAA

Ken Takahashi is sent back to AAA

Wilson Valdez is DFA’d

Whos drinkin tonight?

Update 5:14 pm

per Matt Cerrone’s Metsblog.com, “Minaya would only say the bruise on Beltran’s knee is getting bigger, because it is bone on bone, though he is confident he can return in two weeks.”

Sorry boys, but this is just not shaping up to be our year. If anyone needs further proof that this team should not be buyers, then just read above.

I mentioned earlier, that this spate of injuries may well be a blessing in disguise as there will be no calls for the breaking up of the core which after this year will be Wright, Reyes, and Beltran. At least this is what I am tell myself.

Well, at the very least, Jerry won’t have any option other than to play Fernando and Murphy every day so we can see what they can do (nonetheless, I am sure he will continue to find a way to platoon them and continually disrupt their chance to get into a rhythm).

I am still dumbfounded as to how Sheffield can be out of tonight’s lineup for a night game after a day game.

    1. CaseStreet

      maybe Shef needs another MRI

      1. Kingman 26

        Enjoy the game Case!

        May you witness a victory.

        1. CaseStreet

thanks kingman, I just hope I don’t need an MRI after the game

          1. Kingman 26

            Ha!!

  3. dentulous

Well, this is pretty crappy. If he is down for extended period of time, this season is done. Too many holes for any trade to help. Damn, sucks that this is happening in a season in which the division is really up for grabs. Maybe we can weather the storm and the Philths can continue to help our cause, they owe us afetr the past 2 seasons…..

I can’t help but laugh at this stuff. I can’t wait to see the Bisons tonight at Citifield. Should be an interesting game/series/month.

  5. QnsNative718

    2009 = 1987

    1. wannybackstra

That would be fine, if only 2008 was 2006.

    2. wannybackstra

      I mean 1986, not 2006!!

      1. QnsNative718

        2006 seems so long ago….

I sound like such a pansy.

    3. Kingman 26

We won 92 games in 1987 and were in it till September, so that is an optimistic projection!!

  6. sabermetrician

I think it’s over. I woke up supremely optimistic today. I really thought Carlos was going to be alright. Wow…what a blow.

  7. dirtysanchez

they are recalling martinez and calling up paul misch for taka

    1. mrose

      they are doing a ton

  8. metfreak

What sucks is that Delgado and Putz are coming back after the deadline so we really can’t be sellers either

Include me in ‘The rest of us’.

I don’t even know what to say.
        Sigh…..

  10. wannybackstra

Who is the backup middle infielder without Valdez (mind you that the SS has a brace on his finger and the 2B has bad knees)?

    1. CaseStreet

per, Mattsblog, Tatis will see time @ SS & 2B

      1. wannybackstra

Interesting that several weeks ago on the Saturday that Wright played by himself with Sheff being rested and Beltran puking, that Jerry couldn’t play Tatis at one of those positions rather than the heavy hitting Valdez (now being DFAd) or Ramon Martinez in order to give the team a chance v. Josh Johnson.

        1. GravediggerHebner

I’m not a religious man, but the phrase “Let Go, Let God” comes suddenly to mind.

          1. wannybackstra

It just speaks to the inconsistent manner in which Jerry manages his lineups. Remember when Jerry said Dan Murphy could hit lefties? Well, no one knows because he always sits him.

          2. GravediggerHebner

Can’t argue with it when you put it that way. Perhaps he has no other choice but to find out now. I wonder if the organization regrets this morning’s purge of Wily Mo and Javier Valentin this afternoon.

          3. CaseStreet

            duh, what was the hurry?

          4. GravediggerHebner

Apparently had to make room for the pitcher with the 22.00 ERA that we claimed on waivers, Arturo Lopez? I hope at least he’s a lefty.

          5. wannybackstra

Pena might have become expendable following the recent acqusitions of Emil Brown and Chip Ambres.

          6. wannybackstra

I looked before and found that Valentin was still injured.

Not sure why Willy Mo was let go, other than the fact that he stinks.

Perhaps the team had an arrangement with the players that they would let them free if not in the majors after a certain number of days.

It would seem to me that Valentin could be useful as a backup catcher, occasional 1B and left handed hitter off the bench if Schneider goes down again or if Santos’s magic carpet ride comes to a close.

          7. GravediggerHebner

I share those thoughts regarding Valentin, his presence in Buffalo gave me at least mild comfort in the event of those things you mentioned.

  11. CaseStreet

So this will put Soriano in top 3 All-Star, yes?

Anyone seen Soriano palling around w/ Mets trainers?

  12. CaseStreet

While Omar’s at it, maybe he should DL Wright and Castillo, too.

    1. mrose

can we wrap them in a big bubble?

    2. CaseStreet

I got it. Omar is trying to prove Jimmy Rollins wrong, when Rollins said this:

“It takes more than one player to bring home a championship.”

Maybe Santana CAN bring home a championship by himself.

      1. GravediggerHebner

Has anyone ever called you “half full” before, because you sir are definitely half full of something, and I’m thinking it’s rose colored glasses. Must be painful on the digestive tract.

But seriously, I like your style.

        1. CaseStreet

just call me the Black Knight

          http://www.linustechtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/monty-python-black-knight.bmp

          1. GravediggerHebner

Beltran to Mets: “It’s only a flesh wound.”

  13. GravediggerHebner

This is so many moves I’m not confident that I’m counting correctly, but do the Mets now have 13 active pitchers? I think the Cards also carry 13 pitchers. I wonder when the last time 2 teams carrying 13 pitchers met in the major leagues? Someone get Elias on the phone.

    1. wannybackstra

I have: Johan, Pelfrey, Redding, Livan, Nieve, Frankie, Parnell, Feliciano, Green, Stokes, Switzer, Misch and Dessens = 13.

That’s a lot of pitchers for a team that can’t hit and for a team that ordinarily doesn’t utilize its entire bullpen.

I really can’t see why Misch and Switzer are both here. Cory Sullivan would at least provide a function as a capable defensive outfielder that would allow some late game maneuvering.

      1. wannybackstra

Typing Switzer, Misch and Dessens nearly choked me up…

        1. GravediggerHebner

It is a sad moment in Met roster history when we sit and type about how Cory Sullivan, not Misch or Switzer, was the way to go. Kinda reminds me of the whole Ruben Gotay saga.

          1. wannybackstra

Yeah, it’s not a good thing. Perhaps I’m just really looking for a dsitraction from work.

While we’re on the subject, Adam Bostick has a 1.88 ERA in 24 AA and AAA innings with 26 Ks. He too might be a better left handed option than either of Switzer and Misch, even though they were already on the 40 man.

          2. GravediggerHebner

True. Jason Vargas has had his moments this season, perhaps it’s time for Bostick to have some.

  14. GravediggerHebner

So I see that Luis Ayala was DFA’d. I guess he qualifies as “the devil you know.” Think he’ll be in orange and blue by the weekend?

    1. mrose

is the sky blue? (not lately)

  15. stickguy

yeah, seems to be 2 position guys down, 2 pitchers up.

And no back up SS? Or 2B? Odd agian, even for Omar.

Maybe there is one more move coming to lose a itcher, add a position guy? Or maybe they really want to have lots of guys for Jerry to ignoe?

ALthough with Parnell shut down for 3 games, they are just playing with 24 men (23 w/o green), another Omar special.

they really have to ride this out now. Why bother to make a trade unless it is purely by picking up salary?

Look at the landscape for 2010 and plan accordingly. You can’t win eveyr year, and sometimes you can’t break the bank trying.

    1. CaseStreet

Tatis is backup SS & 2B.

      1. stickguy

        Yeah, that works.

  16. stickguy

also, I think this line up means that Sheffield really is on his last legs (pun intended) as an OF. I just don’;t think he can play out there without a couple days off after each appearance.

  17. stickguy

the thing that amazes me the most?

damn near the entire team in on the DL, but Luis Castillo is still ambulatory

Karmas a beach (I just discovered the alternate spelling of that gets you in moderation!)

    1. GravediggerHebner

It does? I thought we only banned two words here, both of which have 4 letters. Hmmm. It’s a shame when as a society we can’t have a civilized discussion about female dogs without making up spelling.

      1. stickguy

Well, that was the only word I changed, so good bet it caused the problem.

Might have to take back some of those things you said about Matt and his filter!

  18. stickguy

I wonder how much these moves are related to 40 man roster issues?

Hard to believe these are the best arms to call up!

  19. GravediggerHebner

In my reeling from all of these moves, this possibility hadn’t occurred to me, from Bart Hubbuch of NY Post:

“The Mets are hoping Beltran can return in 15 days, but Minaya admitted he could be out until after the All-Star break in mid-July.”

  20. charlies

And, then…there was one (I’m talking about you Mr. Wright). Depressing.

  21. gipperpdx

    Ok…..2010…here we come.
