I looked really quickly and thought “when did Rollie Fingers play for the Cardinals?”

Should I expect a cold and windy night? Don’t know if I should take the baby.

The low is 65, so it really won’t get that cold. Windy though – yes…but I can’t say what a windy day means inside of the ballpark though.

I’m going tomorrow too — and after getting burned by my decision not to go to Shields v. Santana (ok, my wife did not want to sit in the rain and would have been angry if I went with someone else) I’m just going to tough out the weather.

The following is the first paragraph from an ESPN.com magazine. Could there be any more inaccuracies?
In one of our favorite “New Yorker” profiles of all time, Nick Paumgarten tells the tale of Mike “The Mad Dog” Russo and his former on-air mate Mike Francesca. In one priceless anecdote, the author notes, “Chris Carlin, their producer at the time, who now has a show of his own on WFAN, walked in to find them watching ‘The Horse Whisperer.’ Carlin started to speak, but they shushed him; on the TV screen Robert Redford was breaking up with Kristin Scott Thomas. When the scene was over, Russo said, solemnly, ‘Mikey, he had to do it, he had to do it.’”

Well they spelled “Francesa” wrong, and “Mike ‘The Mad Dog’ Russo” is just hilarious. I haven’t seen the Horse Whisperer so I can’t comment on that portion. Carlin did have his own show at one point, so depending on when it was written that was true.

The article is recent.
What a mess.

I actually have more confidence in this team than I did a week or two ago, despite the fact that we continue to lose. I just feel that ultimately we will prove better than Philly/Florida/Atlanta. What is everyone’s feeling?

This probably won’t be much help, but I think all the teams you mentioned are notably imperfect, including the Mets, so it’s kind of a crap shoot. Others have noted this in previous comments but it does seem to be shaping up like 1973 in the context that an oddly low win total may win the division. Unfortunately, if it becomes necessary, that does eliminate the wild card as a possibility.
I still consider Florida too injury prone, young and inconsistent to do it. Philly is still defending champ so I give them that respect, and Atlanta with Bobby Cox I never count out. I just think it’s going to be uncomfortably close all the way home, and hopefully the ride has a happy ending.
But do I have more confidence in the Mets than I did a week ago? No. I just think no one is good enough to run away (as currently comprised, trades may change my thinking).

The season may come down to whichever team can maximize a hot streak. None seem good enough or healthy enough to play well consistently. The Phils can’t pitch, the Marlins can’t hit, the Mets are too unhealthy and the Braves are a notch below in talent.
Hopefully, the Mets only hot streak one wasn’t the one in May.

Don’t you guys feel though that the injuries could all end up “going away” and that we could get healthy and really go on a tear? I really feel good about our chances of that.
BTW, using Zips In Season Projection Tool, David Wright will end up with:
107 Runs, 201 Hits, 46 2B, 5 3B, 20 HR, 106 RBI, 142 Ks, 33 SB, .331/.419/.534
I hope he starts hitting some dingers, that’s actually a great line.

I feel it’s possible, but I don’t yet feel that it’s likely. If/when we come to a point in the season where one of them (Delgado & Reyes) is already back, and producing at a decent level, and the other is about to come back, that’s when I’ll feel more confident in that outcome.
Same with the pitching. With the return of Oliver Perez to at least his prior-to-this-season inconsistency, and should Maine come back healthy, then the pitching staff is suddenly an embarrassment of riches in some respects, unless in the interim Livan, Redding and Nieve have fallen off the face of the earth. But like with the hitters, I’ll start to feel that way when we’re closer to these people’s actual returns.

Sign me up for that line.
The injuries might go away but will the players be at full strength? What is Reyes if not at full speed? We saw what happened last season when Maine tried to pitch through pain. You catch my drift.

Very interesting two paragraphs from Mets Merized Online:
“Nevertheless, we all have our burdens, and when you talk to a guy like Omir Santos, it makes it all worthwhile. He appreciates every minute he dresses in a major league clubhouse. His eyes light up when he talks about being a Met. Add Fernando Tatis to the list of players who “get it.†Both take nothing for granted about the game and life.
On the other end of the spectrum is Ryan Church. He could use a puppy because he has no friends in the Mets clubhouse. He sits alone, mopes alone, and leaves the park alone. Maybe because his body language screams, “get me out of here.†He reminds me of Dave Kingman, who was a fierce loner, that rarely interacted with his teammates or the writers ( unless he was delivering a put-down or a dead rodent).”

What is their source for that information?

It’s written by a gentleman named Doug Branch, who in the article seems to indicate that he had press access to the clubhouse, so in effect the author is his own source.

If it’s true, it certainly isn’t ideal. But I think lots of teams and players have exceeded without being buddies off the field.

Has anyone watch this? This is Tatis punching Pelf and Ollie in the nuts during the winning celebration. Too funny
