Draft And Follow 6-23-09

More of the Mets 2009 Draft class saw their first professional action Monday night for the Brooklyn Cyclones as they took on the Hudson Valley Renegades.  Lance Hoge (36th round, pick 1094), a left handed pitcher out of Kansas State University, pitched a scoreless inning of relief.  Former Stanford University outfielder Joseph August (20, 614) got his first start, playing CF and batting 9th, and he went 1 for 3 with a single.  James Schroeder (33, 1004) out of Southern Arkansas University started at 3B batting 8th but was hit by a pitch in his only plate appearance in the 3rd inning, then left the game an inning later.

Alex Gregory (17, 524) started his 2nd consecutive game in LF and had a single in 4 at bats.  Sam Honeck (11, 344), the veteran of the bunch, has started all 3 games playing 1B and batting 3rd.  Honeck went 3 for 4 last night and is batting .444 at this early point in the season.  Unfortunately Honeck made his 1st error of the season but it did not impact the scoring as the Renegades defeated the Cyclones 3-2.  Other draft picks have been assigned to the Kingsport Mets of the rookie level Appalachian League who play their first game of the season tonight.

Anyone been to a cyclones game? Never been but plan on taking my little league team a few times this summer.

That’s a great idea Case. I’ve never been to a Clones game either, but I love the atmosphere at minor league games.

I’ve been twice, but not since 2007. Had a blast both times. You’re very close to the game, Keyspan Park is quite nice considering it’s a short season A ball park. Right on the boardwalk and you can watch the rollercoaster. Pretty close to Nathans. They have lots of kid and family friendly stuff going on throughout the park and on field between innings. My brother caught a foul ball, and his hand swelled up for about a week, so bring a glove, especially for kids.
