Good morning Mets fans it’s time for the ” Tim Redding’s first Mets win” edition of “This Day In Mets Infamy with Rusty” . So grab your Lean Pockets breakfast sangwich and lets get going.
First off celebrating birthdays today is the First G.M of the Mets George ” Weiss Guy” Weiss (1895) – George was previously the general manager of the Skankees and according to legend single handedly convinced Casey Stengel to come out of retirement to manage the team.
also celebrating a birthday is middle reliever from the early ’90′s Juan Castillo (1970) – He was one of the pieces that got us Pete ( Lyme Disease) Harnish from the Astros
sadly on this date Marv Throneberry passed away (1994) . I am too young to have seen Mahhhvalous Marv play but I do remember him from the old Miller Lite commercials as well as seeing him in old timer games in the late ’70′s – He was possibly the most inept defensive player to ever play for us ( and that says alot !!) – he was a decent hitter – who couldn’t ( as legend has it ) run the bases worth a spit – YOU ARE MISSED MARV !!!
Lastly the Mo Vaughn tidbit of the day – his beard is really made of black asto turf

I have precisely the same memories of Marv–legends of his ineptitude on the basepaths, and those Miller Lite ads when I was a kid!
And wow, I sure did not know that about Mo’s beard…although it does make sense, as that would make it a lot easier to clean, and much easier to remove stray ounces of pastrami and extra hot dogs and donuts that got stuck there….

Marvelous Marv was a little before my time too, but fan early enough to remember them talking about him on air in the late 60s. He was quite the colorful character. He as much defined the new NY Mets as anyone on that first team…
