Injury News: Sheffield may be headed to the DL

PUT THEM DOWN!

PUT THEM DOWN!

According to Bart Hubbach’s Twitter feed, and also reported by Mike Francesa on WFAN, Sheffield will be out of the lineup again tonight.  Hubbach says that he may be headed to the Mets Disabled list team.

Update 4:35PM: Hubbach now states that the Mets will give Sheffield a couple more days rest

Update 4:51PM: Sheff received a cortisone shot in his knee today.  He is available only in an emergency situation until Friday.

If he can’t play, just DL him and let him get the rest and treatment he needs. I was all for just playing him until he dropped, but it looks like that might have already happened.

He has no particular power (or value) with bad wheels anyway. At least if he gets DL’d, they can get another live body up. Cory Sullivan? Anyone?

So to recap, A. Reyes will come up, probably at the expense of the 8th BP arm. (misch of the irish guy). Sheff to the DL, and ?? Guess it would need to be another OF, And Sullivan is at least on the 40 man.

WOnder if they are/were hoping to nurse him along until Beltran comes back? IOW, after the ASB,

    1. GravediggerHebner

I imagine it could be just a simple swap of Sheffield for A. Reyes on the roster. The Tatis in LF batting 4th thing will of course continue because of this, or else Nick Evans in LF batting 4th, because as we’ve learned the LF bats 4th.

      1. stickguy

you must be spending too much time in Jerry’s gut.

although the line up I saw still has tatis in LF, he got demoted to 5th. CHurch in the 4 hole.

and for some reason Murphy benched.

Should be evans in LF and DM at 1B

        1. wannybackstra

Sullivan or Emil Brown would seem to be the next call-up. Brown has a little more pop.

Thinking outside the box, Lucas Duda from AA to play LF?

          1. stickguy

won’t want to put him on the 40 man.

            But I like your thinking!

          2. wannybackstra

Don’t think it is an issue insofar as having to DFA another player — but it might be an issue for service-time, etc.

In the meantime, Duda has been developing plate discipline but has lost the power he was expected to have.

  2. saltygary

I have an idea to save money so payroll can be added, disband AAA Buffalo. Most of the players are on the ML roster right now. The team wont have to lease a ballpark or pay all those extra salaries. LEts go Omar show some guts.

  3. Mr North Jersey

What is the single season record for putting players on the disabled list because dammit if were are not close?

off-topic… is this the worst ad campaign ever? http://gawker.com/5301856/eating-a-burger-king-super-seven-incher-is-just-like-giving-a-blow-job

    1. GravediggerHebner

I don’t know if I’d call it worst. Perhaps most tasteless (like the sandwich itself?).

Eerily reminiscent of the neon graphic for SNY’s Loudmouths, only that involves 2 men.

      That or Subway’s –

“Im not doing that again… I burned(looks down at genitals).”

I suggest that you invite Cincinnati Reds’ pitching coach as your #1 spokes person.

ha! Dick Pole’s parents have a great sense of humor.

        2. DNDJohan aka kistics

lol.. and they had a man’s voice for the oven.

          1. QnsNative718

I would have been curiously aroused to see what the oven and Scott were doing, but because it was a male oven, I dont want to know… Not that theres anything wrong with that.

          2. GravediggerHebner

Did you just type “curiously aroused?”

          3. QnsNative718

I did. Please dont judge me.

    hahahahahaha…hahahahaha….hahahahaha. (Laughter of despair)

    1. Kingman 26

Argenis Reyes may take the roster spot of Gary Sheffield.

      Is it April 1st??

      1. QnsNative718

Im surprised there werent any injuroes from the grounds crew in last night’s work.

        1. QnsNative718

          *injuries

          1. GravediggerHebner

Oh, I thought maybe “injuroes” was what Duaner Sanchez was out looking for at 2:00am. 8)

          2. QnsNative718

            haha, nice.

  6. DNDJohan aka kistics

Anyone want to bet who will go next? I say Castillo next.

Wright will play ALL games for the remainder of the season.

    1. GravediggerHebner

I think in Mets bizarro world, the exact opposite of that.

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

        hmmmmm…………..

        1. QnsNative718

          Trainer Ray Ramirez

  7. metsfan4decades

Well, that’s no bulletin. Anyone who bet against Sheff on the DL wasn’t paying attention.

So it’s far easier to list those who haven’t made a trip tot he DL now. Don’t need too many fingers to count those. Sigh….

If they pull it off this year, they’ll be more than the Miracle or Amazin’ Mets. Or maybe the two combined.

  8. dentulous

man this is comical. Well cant get angry at the team for underperforming anymore, its a AAA lineup on the field everyday….

Damn, I had such high hopes for this season. Stupid SI predicting we would be WS champions and we might/probably wont even sniff it.

    1. metsfan4decades

I forgot about that SI prediction. It’s ALL THEIR FAULT !!!

  9. Mr. Mets Butler

This is beyond comical now. This is now entering medieval torture territory!

    http://www.medievality.com/the-rack-torture.html

    1. GravediggerHebner

I sometimes wonder if just the right amount of time and turning on that would be good for my spine.

  10. wannybackstra

So Murphy begins to swing the bat well during the last week or so and he’s sitting today? Please Jerry, cut the crap.

If he wanted to get Evans in the game so bad, couldn’t he have played him in LF instead of the incredibly useless (at the moment) Fernando Tatis?

I don’t understand why Murphy needs to have 2 hits every game to stay in the next day.

    1. dentulous

yea, its beyond ridiculous. How can these guys stay hot or be consistant when they get inconsistant play time….

    2. GravediggerHebner

Thompson’s not left handed so Jerry doesn’t even have that lame excuse. It’s just perplexing.

    3. Mr. Mets Butler

Good point Wanny. How many ground balls to the left side of the infield will Tatis hit tonight? I mean, Jerry is a moron. Sit him and play Evans. Not Murphy.

    4. DNDJohan aka kistics

Maybe Murphy is hurt too. oops did I just write that outloud?

      1. GravediggerHebner

        LOL

    5. jaded1983

I was pretty annoyed as well to see murph out of the line up, i had a feeling last night after his 0-fer that he would be out today.

      watch him go cold now….

    6. dirtysanchez

again in better managerial hands, i would say we would be ok but his stupidity is adding insult to injury!!

      Cora, ss
      Castillo, 2b
      Wright, 3b
      Church, rf
      Tatis, lf
      Martinez, cf
      Evans, 1b
      Schneider, c
      Nieve, rhp

THE BOTTOM PART OF THIS ORDER IS NON EXISTANT!!!!!
I might just miss this one fellas..this is straight BS

      1. GravediggerHebner

Schneider’s about due for another 3-run bomb.

It might be a courtesy start for Evans before demoting him.

But Tatis in yet again, that’s the one that really kills me.

        1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Jerry’s reasoning for starting Tatis in every game is to get his bat going. I would understand his strategy if this was April or even May. But this is getting close to July. If Tatis isn’t hitting half way through the season, he’s not hitting. Why sit Murphy who has had good ABs and try to get Tatis going. It’s not like we have enough hitting in this lineup to make up for his lack of production.

Jerry needs everything and anything right now. There’s no time to experiment.

      2. mrose

Schneider hit 2 3 run homers this past weekend, lol
and honestly, I can’t get mad..what are they supposed to do? lol

        1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Based on Jerry’s theory, Schneider should bat clean up since he’s shown more pop than any other Mets in past week.

        2. dirtysanchez

make better decisions for starters….these guys are soo undermanned its rediculous yet their manager doesnt put the best guys out there to win. His lineups often dont make sense and he JUST realized he needs to spread the work….im just soo disappointed in jerry and i dont want to hear that he is undermanned bs because im sorry i can accept that if we ptu our best foot foward and get beat but we take a half-a**ed approach and wonder why we cant score runs and win.

      3. QnsNative718

Ok, I wanted to see Church hit clean up. Dont know how many good pitches he’ll see with Fernando ‘Two For You’ Tatis out there…

        1. dirtysanchez

he will see alot…you get church on base..tatis will hit a dp

        2. GravediggerHebner

Another DP tonight and Tatis is officially the team’s porn star.

          1. QnsNative718

            hahahahahahaha!!!!

          2. Joe R

            Wow!

          3. DNDJohan aka kistics

            LMAO!!!

He does give high fives in the nuts

          4. Mr. Mets Butler

            Fernando Titties!

          5. DNDJohan aka kistics

            Fernando “the DP” Titties!

      4. metsfan4decades

How can you miss these games? It’s like a bad train wreck. You want to look away but you’re riveted to the scene unfolding…

      5. There's Always '09

Honestly, how can you even blame Jerry for any lineup he throws out there at this point. I think it’s pretty much just throw it against the wall and see if it sticks.

  11. Joe R

Tatis will hit a homerun tonight! He has been hitting the ball hard albeit into DP’s but he is due and some may say overdue lol.

Im sorry…I am laughing to myself at my desk…This lineup is scary bad!

  12. stickguy

    one of yo will know:

what beer used to be the official mets beer, way back in the day?

    Was it Ballantine?

ANd if not, did one of the NY teams have Ballantine as a sonser?

    1. GravediggerHebner

I’m not sure but I thought it was Rheingold. I think the “Ballantine Blast” was invoked on a home run, but I’m not sure what team. Yankees?

    2. QnsNative718

      Zima.

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

        Zima is a beer?

        1. stickguy

only for the guys in the SNL skit. ANd maybe Steve at Quiznos.

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

            curiously aroused Qns….

    3. Mr. Mets Butler

      It was Rheingold.

      http://www.nytimes.com/1998/03/31/nyregion/bringing-back-a-taste-of-brooklyn-rheingold.html

      1. stickguy

Danged. I screwed up. I bought a 6 pack of ballantine for the game tomorrow, but should have gotten Rheingold. Now what the heck am I supposed to do with Yankee beer?

I know, drink it and pee it out in a parking lot under the GCP off ramp!

I did find out that Ballantine also sponsored the Phils for a while in the 60s. And via google, found this little anecdote (which should make you think of Mex):

Did you ever hear the story of when Dizzy Dean used to broadcast Saturday games for CBS?

Seems Ol’ Diz would sample some of Ballentines finest during the broadcast and become more ‘verbose’ as the game went on.

One afternoon during at a game in Wrigley, the camera showed a couple sitting in the bleachers kissing.

Diz said, “I know what they’re doing. He’s kissing her on the strikes and she’s kissing him on the balls.”

Keeping in mind this was in the mid-60′s, Diz took a mid-season vacation for a couple of weeks.

And we have to put up with McCarver

  13. mrose

so I updated the post with the latest news on Sheff and please check out http://www.nleastchatter.com there are many other moves and injuries around the NL East..if you want to help me on there…also email me mrose@nleastchatter.com

  14. wannybackstra

“Hubbach now states that the Mets will give Sheffield a couple more days rest.”

What a surprise… the Mets are carrying 13 pitchers and they will shorten the bench even further by having someone on it who can’t play.

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

After pinch hitting on one of the Yankees game, he’ll be on DL retroactive…. um…

Let’s see where did we hear that from….

    2. stickguy

so? Why have more than 3 guys on the bench? Jerry will just screw up and PH or substitutions he tries.

When I coached LL, I alsways like it when only 9 (or 10) kids showed up. Never had to do anything but make out the lineup, watch and decide when to rotate pitchers.

Oh, I just realized Jerry isn’t even qualified for that job!

Hey, at least it gets me off of Luis’ back for a while.

    3. There's Always '09

Well, our pinch hitting options are far less than plentiful anyway.

  15. stickguy

One more thought” WIth the recurring knee/leg problems, how long before Beltran has to be moved to a corner OF spot? Maybe even this year while he heals?

Better to have him in LF with less than perfect wheels than on the DL, right?

    1. wannybackstra

Why do that when they can wait for him to get hurt and then sit him on the bench for a few weeks, let him fly cross country in a coach seat and have him pinch hit once in a while?

      1. stickguy

You are right. I forgot for a second who was running the team.

        My bad.

      2. DNDJohan aka kistics

        Yes!

  16. wannybackstra

Hopefully Fatcessa will ask Manuel why he is sitting Dan Murphy while he seems to be getting comfortable at the plate so that I can go to the bathroom, stop by the soda machine, have a pleasant non-substantive conversation with a co-worker and pick some gum off my shoe during Jerry’s awkward silence.

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Uhhh ehhhh.. Well that’s an excellent question Mike. There’s no question about it. We just need to eye-dentify what Tat Ta Ta Tat Tat Tatis can do on every day basis and try to get him going. Murphy has been playing well for us, there’s no question about it. Uhahahahaha

      1. wannybackstra

So help me if he finds anything comical right now.
