The GCL Mets lost to the GCL Marlins yesterday 3-2, and 4 2009 draftees participated.Â To Cody Holliday (18th round, pick 554) I must apologize because I missed his professional debut Tuesday.Â The Wilmington University product was 1 for 3 with a walk and 2 runs scored Tuesday in his first game.Â Wednesday he did not fare as well, playing LF, batting eighth and going 0 for 3.
Other 2009 picks performing for the GCL Mets on Wednesday were Kurt Steinhauer, Travis Ozga and Nelfi Zapata.Â Steinhauer batted third and played RF, going 0 for 3 with a walk and a run scored.Â Ozga started at 1B, batting fifth, then moved to 3B in the sixth inning.Â The switch-hitter was 1 for 4 with a double, but also struck out 3 times.Â The catcher Zapata batted sixth and was 2 for 4, driving in the Mets only 2 runs with a ninth inning single.Â After his first 2 professional games Zapata is batting .333 with 3 RBI.
The Brooklyn Cyclones won big at the Hudson Valley Renegades 10-3.Â Here’s how the 2009 draft picks fared.Â 1B Sam Honeck, who seems firmly entrenched in the #3 spot in the batting order, went 1 for 5 with his first double of the year.Â Nick Santomauro (10, 314) out of Dartmouth College was welcomed to professional baseball by being hit by a pitch as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning.Â He scored a run.Â Alex Gregory, who again batted 7th and played LF, had a big night.Â Gregory went 3 for 5 with a double and a triple, with 2 runs scored and driven in.
Two pitchers saw their first pro action.Â Brandon Sage (37, 1124) from the University of South Alabama pitched the seventh and eighth innings, allowing 1 unearned run on 2 hits and a walk.Â University of West Florida product John Church (23, 704) pitched the ninth inning, allowing 1 run on 1 hit and a walk.
The Kingsport Mets are 1-1 following their 13-6 loss to the Johnson City Cardinals.Â A pair of 2009 draft picks made their debuts.Â Ronald Harris (14, 434) out of Northwood University started in CF and batted second.Â He went 1 for 4 with a double, a walk and 2 RBI.Â Catcher John Freeman (8, 254) out of McNeese State University was 1 for 4 with a single and a walk.Â Joseph Bonfe again started at 3B, batting seventh.Â He was 0 for 3 but had 2 walks and a run scored.Â SS Ryan Mollica batted ninth and singled to go 1 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.
