Post Game: Snoopy Defeats The Red Baron

Chris "The Red Baron" Carpenter & Johan "Snoopy" Santana

“Now, Snoopy had sworn that he’d get that man
So he asked the Great Pumpkin for a new battle plan
He challenged the German to a real dogfight
While the Baron was laughing, he got him in his sight

That Bloody Red Baron was in a fix
He’d tried everything, but he’d run out of tricks
Snoopy fired once and he fired twice
And that Bloody Red Baron went spinning out of sight”

-The Royal Guardsmen

With Chris Carpenter in the role of “The Red Baron” as the ace for the St. Louis Cardinals pitching against him, Johan Santana needed to play his foil “Snoopy The World War I Flying Ace” for the New York Mets to have a chance today.  Just like in the Peanuts cartoons, things didn’t start well for Snoopy.

In the 1st inning he fell behind 1-0.  With one out Skip Schumaker singled to left.  One out later, Ryan Ludwick reached 1st base on a catcher’s interference call against Omir Santos.  Met nemesis Yadier Molina then singled, driving in Schumaker and giving the Red Baron a lead.

The Baron was cruising.  After hitting the first Met batter of the game, Alex Cora, with a pitch, he’d retired the next 9 consecutive Mets including 5 on strike outs.  It looked hopeless for Snoopy.

In the bottom of the 4th inning, the tide of battle turned.  Luis Castillo and David Wright singled.  Ryan Church then grounded into a fielder’s choice, moving Castillo to third base.  Fernando Tatis followed with a single to drive in Castillo, tying the score at 1-1.  Fernando Martinez then grounded out to the Red Baron himself, and there were 2 outs with runners on second and third.

Nick "Woodstock" Evans

Snoopy then called on his faithful companion “Woodstock.”  Filling the role of Snoopy’s lifetime sidekick today was Nick Evans.  Woodstock doubled into the rightfield corner, driving in 2 runs and giving Snoopy’s Mets a 3-1 lead.

The Baron’s troops mustered another run for him in the 6th.  Rick Ankiel led off with a double and a 2 out single by Joe Thurston drove in Ankiel and made the score 3-2.

Francisco "Charlie Brown" Rodriguez

Francisco "Charlie Brown" Rodriguez

With a one run lead in the 9th inning, Snoopy’s trusted friend “Charlie Brown” took the mound to close it out.  Francisco Rodriguez played the role of Charlie Brown better than Brown himself ever could.  He quickly dispatched with the first 2 batters on back-to-back strikeouts.  Then Albert Pujols came to the plate and Met fans had visions of the Charlie Brown whose clothes are knocked off by a line drive back through the box.  Charlie thwarted that plan by walking Pujols.

Oh no, not again

Oh no, not again

Then Charlie Brown walked Ryan Ludwick, putting the tying run in scoring position and bringing Molina to the plate.  Would we relive 2006?  Would Charlie Brown be undressed by a game tying line drive?  Not this time.  Brown sealed the deal.  Molina lined out to left field, ending the game and earning a save for Charlie Brown.  Also rendering moot the terrible call by 2nd base umpire Jerry Meals when Pujols had clearly been picked off 2nd base for the final out moments earlier, but for some reason he was called safe and the inning continued.  Charlie Brown shook it off and Snoopy defeated the Red Baron 3-2, taking the series 3 games to 1.

Luis "Lucy" Castillo

Thankfully Luis Castillo did not play the role of “Lucy” and drop any pop-ups, so he does not need to be traded at this time.

Actually just red the post-game. Grave… you are the freakin man. Woodstock does kind of look like Evans… Kiiiiind of…

Missed the game because I was at work. You know, where I…”work”. But I followed it on GameCast… Wow, this is exactly why we got #57. Winning 3 outta 4 with a depleted team does wonders for this team’s confidence. Lets keep it rollin by bustin those Yankees in the mouth!

      Where do you “work”?

      1. QnsNative718

        AIG. ha!

      Minus Beltran, Reyes & Delgado…

      1. QnsNative718

oh and with three #5 pitchers…

  4. wannybackstra

This series means much less if the Mets don’t take 2 of 3 this weekend.

Nonetheless, every win is huge now.

Thankfully, Johan got his act together and preserved both Green and Parnell for tomorrow because Pelfrey has not given the team much length the last few times out.

    1. QnsNative718

Disagree. I dont think it would mean much less at all. The Yankees arent exactly the Walking Wounded like the Mets are. Theyre payroll of over $200M will be out there. The pressure is on them to stick it to the injury-ridden Mets.

        *Their

I’m speaking from the perspective of trying to win the NL East or make the playoffs — I’m not talking about moral victories.

        1. QnsNative718

Well moral victories can very easily spark a team.

  5. CaseStreet

You guys feel that? That was Mets fans everywhere exhaling a sigh of relief? This is the first series the Mets won after losing four series.

    1. CaseStreet

damn, we need an edit button

      1. GravediggerHebner

I have one. What do you want to edit?

    2. DNDJohan aka kistics

No… I would like to believe that we won the Yankees series.

  6. danthemanmurphy

    Good win for Snoopy!
Let’s hope we won’t have to listen to too much crap from Yankee fans this weekend. LGM!

  7. mrose

should we add a RIP to Michael Jackson too fellas? :(

    1. GravediggerHebner

I am waiting until I hear it from a “real” source. I enjoy the work of TMZ but, once CNN or someone a bit more reputable has it, I will add him too.

      1. mrose

see, in this situation, TMZ is better than CNN… Francessa announced it too…
        heh

        1. GravediggerHebner

Well you can make a post about it if you want to. I’m just old enough that I’m going to wait for a source I am familiar with and trust before I pronounce someone dead. Bad karma killing people you know. And just for the record I did NOT have a poster of Michael Jackson when I was a teenager.

          1. mrose

i’m not gonna make a full post about it either way….that would be karma just pandering for hits…

          2. GravediggerHebner

I sold my soul on the “pandering for hits” thing the day I learned how tags work.

Farrah appears here because I really did have that poster on my wall as a kid. Basically stared at it for years. Learned what nipples were from it. Also I watched Charlie’s Angels faithfully.

Though he is a world famous icon of music that spans generations, Jackson did not play nearly as significant a role in my life as Fawcett did, and for much of my adult life he has been known more for his freakish behavior and questionable relations with young boys than his music.

I am not inclined to memorialize him except for the reason that I did so for Farrah and therefore feel like I have to do it for him too.

        2. dirtysanchez

i heard he is hospitalized but not dead…

          1. mrose

TMZ and FoxNews reporting hes passed away

          2. dirtysanchez

then cnn is really late lol

          3. Kingman 26

A real news source–the LA Times–is reporting that he is in a coma….as of about 30 minutes ago….

          4. Kingman 26

            CNN saying the same; hospitalized/coma…

TMZ and Fox are most definitely not qualified to use the word “news” in their self-descriptions…..news they most definitely ain’t….

          5. Kingman 26

OK, now the LA Times and CBS say he has died….maybe Faux News was right for once!

But probably not; they probably reported it before it happened….

          6. dentulous

msnbc reporting he is dead too.

          7. Kingman 26

Yeah, seems like it is real….pretty crazy.

This will be a rather impressive media frenzy the next couple of days.

          8. mrose

something isn’t adding up for cnn…
            cnn still says coma?

          9. Kingman 26

They do right now have a banner saying he has died; crediting it to the LA Times….

          10. mrose

nevermind, cnn has just put up that he died

oh and the comments, trust me, I don’t take TMZ or Foxnews as news typically, but lets remember what this had to do with… a celebrity which they stalk… i’m sure their people followed the ambulance to the hospital and had people inside before other news sources knew…
you have to realize what were talking about here

          11. Kingman 26

Gotcha MRose; totally agree about TMZ…..

I should not mention Fox, as I detest them and am pretty incapable of being fair and balanced when it comes to them.

            But you are right.

  8. dirtysanchez

Grave…you have some imagination brother lolll Great Job again!

    1. GravediggerHebner

      Thank you sir :-)

      1. Kingman 26

Thank YOU sir for all that you do!!

Kong your Nets have traded Vince Carter.

    http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/9732454/Reports:-Nets-deal-Carter-to-Magic-for-Alston,-Lee

    1. Kingman 26

Just saw it, and am not sure what to think. The Jefferson trade has so far been a disaster, but the Kidd one was amazing.

Vince was mostly really good, but is clearly on the decline, and I am hoping very much that the young shooter we got along with whoever Thorn drafts tonight will combine with Devin to make us an exciting young team. Courtney Lee could be just like Devin, and develop in a hurry.

The main thing in this trade was clearly money. We will now have tons of dough to spend in 2010, and if Shaq cannot get LeBron a title, then he might very well come to play with Brook Lopez and our backcourt, and if not LeBron, Dwyane Wade.

The future is bright for us.

      1. GravediggerHebner

Yes, Devin Harris was quite the pick up. Rod Thorn strikes me from afar as a guy who gets it right more often than not. As a Knick fan I have to settle for the rumors of Darko Milicic coming. Then when your Brooklyn Nets get LeBron, I’ll get a battered and past his prime Amari Stoudamire (but hopefully at least Chris Bosh – I could get excited about that). Woo Hoo!

        1. Kingman 26

Personally, I am hoping the Brooklyn thing does not happen…the arena in Newark is beautiful–was there once for an Eagles concert, and it is really fantastic. Hopefully the team will wind up there.

Regardless, while it has been very hard for me to see the 2002–2003 Conf. title teams torn apart, they really were done the minute KMart left.

I agree 100% about Thorn. He completely revitalized one of the worst franchises in sports, and if he drafts a good power forward tonight, we will be right back in the playoff mix.

As for your being a Knick fan, I like you too much to give you any grief, but all I can say is, how the hell can they be so bad for so long??

  10. metsfan4decades

The authors on this site just continue to amaze me. This wrap up, with it’s graphics and clever connotations, just made chuckle.

So 3 out of 4 in the series is huge, in my opinion. That being said, I’m hoping we can take 2 of 3 from the Yanks but probably 1 is more realistic.
