David Lennon and Bart Hubbach are reporting on their twitter pages that John Maine developed pain in his shoulder while playing catch on Thursday. He was then given a cortisone shot and Lennon says that Maine doesn’t expect to return until after the All-Star Break

The Mets should get a new medical team.

I can only take solace in the thought that my favorite team’s trade deadline acquisitions are going to include: Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, John Maine, Oliver Perez, Carlos Beltran, Angel Pagan, and some others that are slipping my alcohol addled brain.

A late-season waiver wire deal should bring us JJ Putz and Billy Wagner!!

It’s Newcastle Brown Ale but I’m listening intently to it!

I have always been a big Maine fan, and thought that he was close to putting it all together and having a dominant break through season.
Now, I am wondering if his career is effectively over (becoming one of those ugys who misses a ton of time, pitches briefly, gets hurt, etc.)
Of course, after about 3 years, he will sign a MiL deal with the Yankess, get healthy, and pitch a perfect game!

That last paragraph sort of sums it up.

I have been a big Maine fan too, and this is indeed really frustrating, but I think it is too early to throw in the towel…after all, any of us who throw in a towel will surely tear a rotator cuff doing it….

I love Maine. I think he can provide for this team big time, but he really needs to know what’s going on. Is it just a pinch nerve? Is it something serious the Mets’ crack medical staff is missing? How do our medical people miss so many things for so long?

I have no idea…it makes no sense, and I hope the training and medical staff are the first changes after the season.
Again, in spring 2008, with no WBC, we had injured and unprepared players all over the place, and we have seen player after player continue playing hurt and have “setbacks” again and again this year.
There has to be a better way of handling this.

You’re completely right Kingman. I just look at the way the medical staff has handled the Wagner and Reyes injuries and I completely shudder. Not to mention that they didn’t send Delgado off for surgery the first flare up, they wait until it gets more severe and puts the rest of his season in jeopardy.

And, here I go being a sunshiner! And still, we are just .5 game out!

Here’s the thing. We knew he’d be out a while. There were a few people who drank the Kool-Aid and thought he’d be back after two starts, but most of us were realistic and knew it would be a while. We’ve treaded water without him and we can continue to do so if Nieve stays as solid as he’s been (unfortunately as much as I like Nieve, that’s a big if).

With Maine, I wonder how much of it is a problem vs. being in his head? That is, it is quite common after a surgery to have some level of soreness, scar tissue, etc, which you are going to feel.
So is this really “pain”, as in dang it hurts ans something must be very wrong, or “ooh, I feel something, and I am going to become a basket case about it”?
I’m not big on playing through pain, since it usually makes the problem worse, but if he is really just working through normal post-op stuff, he might just have to get mentally comfortable enough to just let it rip, and trust that his arm isn’t going to fall off.

Well, it should be a busy off season for Minaya.
Cant this team catch a break?
