Draft And Follow 6-26-09

Only 2 members of the 2009 Draft class played for the GCL Mets on Thursday.  CF Kurt Steinhauer batted third and was 1 for 5 with a 6th inning RBI double.  Cody Holliday played RF and batted fifth.  He finished 0 for 3 with 2 walks and a run scored.  The GCL Mets beat the GCL Cardinals 9-0.  For more info check out the box score and the recap.

The Brooklyn Cyclones played at the Aberdeen IronBirds.  2009 Draft picks Sam Honeck, Alex Gregory and Nick Santomauro all played on offense, and pitcher Darin Gorski (7th round, pick 224) out of Kutztown University saw his first professional action.  Honeck continued his season long streak of starting at 1B and batting third.  He went 1 for 4 with a single and drove in his 5th run of the season.  LF Gregory batted fifth and scored 2 runs despite going 0 for 3.  The o’fer brought his BA down to a cool .353.  Santomauro batted sixth as the DH and had 2 hits in 4 at bats including his first triple of the season, and drove in 3 runs for the Cyclones.

Gorski came on in relief to start the 8th inning and sent the IronBirds down 1-2-3.  In the 9th inning he didn’t fare as well, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits and a walk, but he finished the game and struck out a total of 4 in his first professional appearance.  The Cyclones won 8-2.  For a brief story on the game check out Cyclones Bash Birds, as well as the box score and recap.  Also check out The Brooklyn Paper game story.

How long after a draft does it take for one of these guys to make it to the top 10 prospects list?

I have no idea. Hopefully WannyBackstra will see your question, I believe he will have at least some knowledge on the subject. Every time I write another post about the minor leagues and the draft it’s a learning experience for me.

Not sure I understand your question, Case. If you’re asking when one of these specific prospects might reach the Mets top 10 lists, I suspect no time soon unless Matz makes it on by virtue of his status as their highest pick this year.

But there’s no reason that BA, Baseball Prospectus or any other one of the minor league gurus would not place one of these players on their next published rankings. They often place newly drafted players atop or near the top of their rankings. Most recently, I recall Eric Hosmer and Justin Smoak among the top rated Royals and Rangers prospects, respectively, in the Fall 2008 rankings.

yup, I wanted to know if any of these guys could be on a top ten list.

So Matz is the guy that would do it?

Yeah, he’d be the only one and that might only happen if the Mets system is viewed as very weak or if a trade depletes other players who might make the list.

The way I see it the following players are automatically ahead of him: Holt, Mejia, Thole, F-Mart (might lose prospect eligibility this season), Flores, Rustich, Niese and Davis. Matz might fall in line with the following guys who could hurt their stock with bad seasons: Marte (having a bad season), Pena, Moviel, Havens, Tejada, Puello, Aderlin Rodriguez and Robert Carson.

In other words, I don’t see it for Matz.

Case, I think this sort of dances around your question in a non-Mets specific way:
