Mets Notes:

  • Hernandez has only suffered two losses this season, but both have come at the bats of the Cardinals. Hernandez wasn’t knocked around last time, giving up just three runs-two earned-on eight hits in seven innings. He simply couldn’t match Joel Pineiro, who spun a two-hit shutout. Hernandez is 0-3 with a 6.94 ERA in six career starts against the Yankees. That includes an effort earlier this month, when he received a no-decision after allowing six runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. He did surrender home runs to Robinson Cano, Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter in the Yankees’ 9-8 win.
  • The Mets are without injured center fielder Carlos Beltran, shortstop Jose Reyes and first baseman Carlos Delgado. They are in danger of falling to .500 for the first time since May 6.
  • With a lineup featuring the likes of Argenis Reyes and Jeremy Reed, the Mets are 9 for 87 (.103) in the past three games. They have seven singles, a two-run double by Nick Evans and a solo homer by Gary Sheffield during that span.
  • “The fact that we are depleted – and I think guys are trying – we just lack a few things right now,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. “What we have to do is, we’ll just have to catch a break. We have to catch somebody on a bad day at this point. But that’s where we are.”
  • Mets starter Livan Hernandez has never beaten the Yankees, going 0-3 with a 6.94 ERA in six outings. He did not receive a decision June 12 in the Bronx when he gave up six runs over 5 1-3 innings in a 9-8 loss. That outing started a three-game losing streak for the Mets with the veteran right-hander on the mound. He is 0-2 with a 4.66 ERA in that span after yielding three runs over seven innings Tuesday in a 3-0 loss to St. Louis.

Yankees Notes:
  • The New York Yankees have dominated the New York Mets this weekend, even without captain Derek Jeter. The Yankees hope to have Jeter back in the lineup Sunday night when they try to complete a three-game Subway Series sweep of the Mets at Citi Field. Jeter has sat out the first two games of this series with the flu, and Johnny Damon missed Saturday’s 5-0 victory that stretched the winning streak for the Yankees (42-32) to four games. Manager Joe Girardi indicated that a flu bug had gone around his team.
  • “That’s on him, man. I told him I could play. That’s all his decision,” Jeter said about missing Saturday’s game. Jeter turned 35 on Friday, and is hitting .386 in interleague play this year.
  • The Yankees haven’t needed the star shortstop against their depleted crosstown rivals. The Mets (37-36) have been outscored 14-1 and outhit 22-4 in the first two games of the weekend series, and are 1-4 against the Yankees in 2009.
  • The Yankees will go for the sweep behind Chien-Ming Wang, who they feel is pitching better as he tries again for his first win of the season. Wang returned to the rotation June 4 after a short stint in the bullpen, and is 0-3 with a 7.27 ERA in his last four starts. He has given up three runs in a season-high five innings in each of his last two outings, however, including a 4-0 loss at Atlanta on Tuesday. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 4.96 ERA in two career starts versus the Mets.
  • Rodriguez has enjoyed plenty of success against Hernandez, going 11 for 19 with three homers and 10 RBIs. Jeter is 8 for 19 while Mark Teixeira is 3 for 6 with two homers and three RBIs.

Look if you’re a Murphy man, you make me ill.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO REALIZE THIS GUY IS NOT FIT FOR THE MAJORS?????

Maybe in a year or two, not now. He is hurting us everywhere.

I’m sorry if I sound disgusted and generally I try not to post during a game when I might be a little too emotional but right now it’s like men playing with boys. The Mets problems go much deeper than the acquisition of a potent bat. Just how many outs do you have to give the Yankees? During last night’s game the Yankees were laughing in their dugout. Is there going to be a repeat tonight.

I agree with men vs. boys. I feel like we are completely overmatched. After the Cards series I really thought this team was going to be able to fight its way through all this. But these three games have shown that we aren’t able to compete with truly good teams. It’s pathetic because the division is up for grabs.

    Problems as I see them:

1 – Obviously injuries to Beltran, Delgado, Reyes, Putz, Maine, and Wagner.

2 – Jerry Manuel can’t manage his way out of a paper sack.

3 – Daniel Murphy is not ready for the majors.

4 – We signed Oliver Perez.

5 – Redding is better suited as the long man in the pen.

6 – Outside of Feliciano and Frankie the pen is weak.

7 – We don’t have a lot of strong prospects to deal.

8 – Omar Minaya tries to catch lightning in a bottle for way too long. (See Tatis, Murphy, Marlon Anderson, Guillermo Mota)

9 – We have no power when injured and limited power when healthy.

      Problems as I see them:

1 – Obviously injuries to Beltran, Delgado, Reyes, Putz, Maine, and Wagner.
(Definite problem that only time will fix problem is we may not have enough)

2 – Jerry Manuel can’t manage his way out of a paper sack.
(Manuel while no Bobby V. is adequate so long as players believe in him)

3 – Daniel Murphy is not ready for the majors.
(Murphy is a bat without a position that needs to play ever day to achieve his true potential which may turn out to be a poor man’s Ichiro Suzuki offensively)

4 – We signed Oliver Perez.
(A True “PROBLEM” but if he can get back to where he was at 2nd half 2008 then that is all we can hope for)

5 – Redding is better suited as the long man in the pen.
(I don’t see Redding as a problem so far)

6 – Outside of Feliciano and Frankie the pen is weak.
(all pens have ups and down Feliciano and Krod have been the most consistant that is for sure but Green has been good despite his last 3 outings and Stokes has been good also Parnell has been a pleasant surprise that can only improve if kept healthy)

7 – We don’t have a lot of strong prospects to deal.
(Strong at AAA? your right but Holt Flores Martinez are nothing to sneeze at)

8 – Omar Minaya tries to catch lightning in a bottle for way too long. (See Tatis, Murphy, Marlon Anderson, Guillermo Mota)
      (No argument there)

9 – We have no power when injured and limited power when healthy.
(True but who says you need power to win give me Great pitching Solid Defense and guys that can hit for avg any day and I will show you a W.S. contender)

Blame this one on murphy.Send this guy down to aaa for a year and use him as trade bait next year when we need someone hell be a good prospect then.As far as the rest of the year let tatis play 1st even if he can’t hit he still can field better than murphy.

    1. dentulous

Murphy in the 1st when the yankees had there only rally through a ball to wright to get jeter at 3rd with no force he double clutched jeter-safe didn’t get the force at 1st where he should have gone in the first place 2 plays later he drops a double play ball to him at 1 st

        1. dentulous
