This week in the All-Star voting, there is not much change, in fact none in the vote getters. I’m gonna leave this one strictly for discussion because unless Rollins makes up over 200k votes there will not be any major upsets. One note though is that Soriano is only a bit over 150,000 votes behind Beltran, so even though Carlos wouldn’t start at this point, lets hope he gets the honor.

That to me is one of the most obvious examples of Jerry Manuel’s failings as a manager. He is constantly saying words to the effect of “If he keeps hitting I’ll keep playing him” but this doesn’t seem to apply to Murphy.

Its one thing i learned in very short order. Its one thing what jerrys says and another what he does. Murph has been shafted this whole year and i understand jerry is easing him into an mlb season but still. If a kid goes on a 5 rbi tear, you gotta play him the next day. Its about sending a message and right now, all the mets are getting the wrong signals.

My favorite thing on ESPN Insider is the trade rumors section. I once saw a rumor that Carlos Beltran as a free agent may sign with: Angels, Phillies, Mets, Braves, Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, Mariners, Rockies, Dodgers, Padres, White Sox, Rangers, Royals, Pirates, Nationals, Marlins, and D-Backs. As far as voting for Beltran or not, I checked and the only All-Star related incentive in his contract is he gets $100,000 if he receives the most total votes in the NL. So if you want to save the Wilpons 100 grand don’t vote for him. If you want to spite them, get voting!

I Don’t like Jerry. He gets on my nerves, and I just can’t see how he adds any value. Can anyone think of a move he made that you say “wow, smart guy, that got them a win!” I’m sure though there are pelnty of “what a bone head move” moments that come to mind.
The free agent list from an earlier thread was not particulary exciting. ANd that is another big reason not to unload a bunch of prospects for a rental. They are going to need them to build a decent team for 2010.
And I am not supporting a go for broke long shot at the post season, to heck with the future, plan. Fine to make a trade, but it better be for someone with at least another year or 2 on the contract.
I also wouldn’t be upset if Evans became the regular 1B, if Murphy isn’t going to keep the job. At least it is a RH bat with some pop.
And I do think a “Citi team” can live without a bunch of big HR mashers. A line drive gap hitter should thrive in this park. Doubles and triples galore. Frnakly, it is what Reyes should be, when he isn’t swinging for the fences and popping up all the time.
If Murphy gets back to the flashes he showed last year, he could fit the mold too.
SO, which of the FAs, or trade possibilities, fits that mold? At least for the Met prospects, F Mart and even Thole seem to be that type of hitter
Sadly, if Omar is still in charge, I expect the big off season moves to be signing Vlad, and re-upping Delgado.

I’ll concentrate solely on hitters, leaving pitchers for some other time.
Based on contracts, 1B and C are the obvious openings. After those, LF and RF have no sure things for the future, with Tatis and Sheffield expiring, and Church and Reed still arbitration eligible and therefore easily released if one chooses to do so.
I am going to assume for the sake of discussion that FMart takes one of those corner spots. I can’t begin to speculate on off season trades now, so I’ll stick to free agents. So, we want to fill 1B, C and COR OF:
of the available 1B, the one I find most attractive is Adam LaRoche, but as you pointed out, this could be Evans/Murphy in house.
of the available C, I don’t see how Thole will be ready next season so we need a 1 or 2 year guy. Bengie Molina is terribly slow and barely gets on base, but at least he has some pop. I guess I could accept him in a transitional phase.
of the available OF, I covet Jason Bay but I imagine he’ll stay in Boston. That leaves Matt Holliday as the best option, with Rick Ankiel as a distant second in my opinion. Guerrero is a DH. Unless Andruw Jones is truly back, I don’t see who else helps. Abreu?
They’re going to realistically fill at least one hole by trade, all the more reason to not spend chips now, which makes someone, if not actually Pierre, someone in his situation which would make the cost low, more viable.

you can’t give Hudson a 4 year deal at age 33/34. If he stays in 1 piece this season, 2 years max (to replace Castillo). Not sure how much of a real upgrade it wil lbe, but it’s a start.
Evans might surpirsie some people too. And at lest he is cheap.
I really don’t see Holliday here though. But who knows how the contract offers play out (I guess ow bad the Stanks want him will be a big factor)
Sign a stop gap for C (keep Santos), and if they fill 1B in house, make the big move for a corner OF (trade), hopefully being at least a partial salary dump (to ease the prospect load).
Why would Houston want Castillo? They already have Kaz!

If Thole continues to hit .350 they’ll have to consider him for the big club despite his lack of/developing defensive prowess. Omir can be his late inning caddy and the Mets can carry a third catcher who can serve as a pinch hitter/emergency replacement.

Prince Fielder will be entering into the last year of his contract after this season (which I think would have been his last season of arb eligibility but I could be wrong).
Perhaps Milwaukee will seek to move him while his value is at its highest and the Mets can put together an offer headed by Fernando Martinez (who is proving capable in CF and could replace Cameron), one of Brad Holt of Jenrry Mejia and Jon Niese.

Their incentive may be that he will be too expensive for them to retain beyond 2010 and to maximize his value by trading him after this season while he has a whole season left on his deal (as opposed to waiting until next July).

- Delgado was suppose to be a guess today but had to cancel b/c of a scheduling conflict.
- Seriously talking about a Redding/Ollie tandem for the 5th starter when Ollie returns – which should be after one more rehab start. Supposedly, Redding starting the game, Ollie reliving him.
- John Maine completely shut down. Will see a doctor on Thursday. Depending on the news, might be able to start throwing off a flat surface – not even the mound. (so here’s hoping Nieve has yet another good start tonight).
- FMart was dangerously close to be sent down, but Angel Pagan is not as close to coming back as originally thought, so will probably see FMart around longer than anticipated.

re: jerry, there’s no formula that could be developed to predict his management. all you can guess is that he will do something not only counterintuitive but most likely not very well thought out.

Even Kevin B. on the pregame show sounds pretty dejected about this team right now….
Saying, unless they pull a trigger on a trade, this is as good as it gets right now. Or unless there is someone in the minors than can have an impact. This is a big week for the Mets, before the ASB, playing good teams.
Talking about morale. Doesn’t like this whole ‘hanging around and seeing if they can get it done’. Wants to see an impact player be added NOW.
Says we don’t even know what we’ll get when the ‘core’ on the DL gets back, if they’ll even get it done.
