Post Game: Balls

Do you like balls?

Do you like balls?

If you like balls, you loved tonight’s Mets-Yankees game, which the Yankees won 4-2.  The first batter of the game, Derek Jeter, hit a ball off the wall.  After that, Met pitchers threw mostly balls.  Met pitchers issued 11 bases on balls.  Met pitchers threw a total of 172 pitches, 92 of which were balls.  That’s 53% balls.  No Met pitcher threw more strikes than balls.  Balls balls BALLS!  Met pitchers showed a lot of balls, but not the right kind of balls.

The kind of balls the Mets should’ve displayed are more like those of Tommy DeVito from Goodfellas: “You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it’s me, I’m a little (messed) up maybe, but I’m funny how, I mean funny like I’m a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I’m here to (freakin’) amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?”

That’s what they should’ve said to the Yankees.  But they didn’t.  They just threw balls around like they didn’t have a care in the world.  They even threw 4 balls to Mariano Rivera, walking him with the bases loaded to give him his 1st career RBI.  “Hey Yankees, you want some balls?  Here you go, have some balls,” said the Mets.  In throwing their balls around so indifferently, the Mets showed they don’t really have any balls at all.

In other news, on the night Rivera recorded the 1st RBI of his career he also recorded the 500th save of his career.  Congratulations to Rivera on this outstanding achievement in the field of excellence.

If they dont rebound in beer city and play like the last couple of Cards games, they could be practically elimnated by next weekend. The Phils seem to be stabalizing, and if they pick up another 2 games before the clubs meet (putting it at 4.5), the very real possibility of a sweep would put the Mets on death’s door.

This team just cant get out of it’s own way most of the time. ANd Murphy and Martinez by all rights should be sent down to get their she at together. And know, I have no idea who to call up instead, but anyone that might be able to play clean ball? SUllivan? whoever else is left after the recent AAA purge?

just gets frustrating, but the bright side to a death spiral (as in exiting next weekend on a 8 game losing streak) is Omar might even realize he needs to look at every move as planning for 2010.

WOnder if an AL team will trade something worthwhile for SHeffield (he is cheap!) And anyone else (including Castillo) that isn’t in a solid 2010 plan can go too.

Too early for that stick but I would not want to get down that big either way.

If we are out of it then Livan, Tatis, Schnieder, Cora, Putz if he’s back, are all on the block

Like I’ve been saying, Philly isn’t as bad as they’ve been playing recently. They’re righting the ship and we’re in a tailspin this month. 8 games behind by the ASB will have us knocked out. I’d love a proper rebuilding, but NY never gets that. At least Jerry (and hopefully Omar) will be gone once this year’s debacle is over.

As much as many might want Omar gone, he’s making roughly $4mil a year through 2012. No way the Wilpons absorb that.
