Record: 5-3 Era: 4.67 K: 37 BB: 29 WHIP: 1.48

Mets Notes:

  • Pelfrey was once again the victim of one bad inning on Friday night against the Yankees. This time it was the second, in which he allowed four hits that, combined with three Mets errors, led to four runs. Pelfrey responded by retiring 11 of the last 12 batters he faced. Pelfrey is 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA in one career start against the Brewers, a 12-3 loss on May 12, 2007. Pelfrey finished this June with a 1-2 mark and a 6.31 ERA; he is 6-4 lifetime with a 3.79 ERA in July.
  • New York (37-39) is looking to avoid its first six-game slide since Sept. 5-10, 2005. The Mets went 9-18 in June – their worst month since a 7-19 September in 2003.
  • “We just had a little family talk – a little private family discussion,” manager Jerry Manuel said following Tuesday night’s 30-minute closed-door meeting. “Just to get things in order, a lot of things.”
  • One thing of those things is hitting. New York is batting .191 during its five-game skid. One of the few Mets producing at the plate is third baseman David Wright, who raised his average to .345 with Tuesday’s 3-for-4 effort. His two-run shot in the first inning was his first home run in 20 games.
  • Mike Pelfrey takes the mound in the series finale. He allowed four runs in Friday’s 9-1 loss to the Yankees, but only two were earned as second-inning errors by Wright, Alex Cora and Nick Evans gave the Mets’ crosstown rivals a 4-0 advantage.
  • “There was a point there, I started laughing,” Pelfrey said following his five-inning outing. “You want the ball to get hit to those guys. They make great plays all the time. That was just weird.” The Mets have lost four of Pelfrey’s last five starts. The right-hander made one career start versus Milwaukee, pitching five innings and giving up four runs in a 12-3 home defeat May 12, 2007
Record: 8-4 Era: 2.86 K: 102 BB: 44 WHIP: 1.16

Brewers Notes:

  • Gallardo gave up a home run in the first inning in his last start, but allowed just three other hits the rest of the way to pick up his eighth win against the Giants on Friday. Gallardo allowed four hits in 7 2/3 innings, striking out nine and walking three in his ninth quality start of the season. Gallardo faced the Mets earlier this year when he threw six scoreless innings in a 1-0 Milwaukee loss on April 18. Gallardo took a no-decision in that game, finishing with seven strikeouts.
  • “It couldn’t get much better,” said Braun, batting .429 during a seven-game hitting streak. “We have a tough schedule up until the All-Star break. We’ve got these guys one more day, go to Chicago and then we’ve got the Dodgers and Cardinals.”
  • Fielder hit a solo shot in the seventh to reach the 20-homer mark for the fourth consecutive season. He’s batting .350 (14 for 40) with five home runs and nine RBIs in 10 career home games versus the Mets.
  • The Brewers have taken three of five from the Mets in 2009, and Yovani Gallardo looks to give Milwaukee its first season series win over New York since 2003. The right-hander is 4-2 with a 1.76 ERA in his last seven starts.
  • “He’s been great for us all year,” Braun said. “He’s been our guy.” Gallardo had nine strikeouts and gave up one run and four hits over 7 2-3 innings of Friday’s 5-1 victory over San Francisco. He retired 16 in a row after surrendering a solo shot in the first.
  • In his first career appearance against the Mets, Gallardo did not get the decision in a 1-0 loss at Citi Field on April 18. He struck out seven and yielded five hits in six scoreless innings.

    C’mon Mets. Seriously. C’mon.

  2. wannybackstra

Pelfrey can prove that he’s gut the fortitude to be a front of a rotation starter by playing stopper against a very good pitcher and good team.

    1. GravediggerHebner

I like that you used “gut” in there. Nice touch, as this is a gut check today.

      1. There's Always '09

Castillo grounded into a fielder’s choice in the 1st. Do you think Yahoo uses “stock footage” of that?

        1. Kingman 26

No, but they surely do when it comes to your comments about Castillo.

          1. There's Always '09

here’s something different. he sucks. he is as bad as jason kendall.

          2. Kingman 26

Not even close, and wrong again—or still, I should say.

Kendall and Castillo have about the same PA, and except for more RBI, Castillo beats him in EVERY stat. Even slugging. His OPS is about 100 points higher.

But I know, you would rather have Kendall, Kaz Matsui, Argenis Reyes, and a one-legged dog.

          3. There's Always '09

hahaha…i would rescue a one legged dog before i had castillo on my team…all day, everyday.

it’s not that i truly believe kendall is a better player than castillo. i think kendall is horrible. here is my point. this is a list of 2b in mlb that i would take on my team over castillo:
utley, kinsler, pedroia, phillips, b. roberts, alexei ramirez, uggla, kendrick, cano, kelly johnson, mark derosa, rickie weeks, placido polanco, ian stewart, orlando hudson, mark ellis, iwomura, aaron hill, scutaro, freddy sanchez, schumaker, asdrubal cabrera, bonifacio, willie harris, martin prado, mike fontenot, omar infante, ryan raburn, craig counsell, nick punto.

          4. Kingman 26

I gotcha man, didn’t mean to be harsh, this losing is getting to me.

You are entitled to your opinion for sure, and I am not saying Slappy is an all-star any more…I just think when he has a .375 OBP and fields pretty well, that he is not that bad. That’s all.

And I see you left Kaz off today’s list! :-)

          5. There's Always '09

No offense was taken at all. We’re all in this together. We all have the same goal, but a different idea about how to get there. My priority is to either upgrade the catching position offensively this offseason or we have to do something about Castillo (i.e. replace with O-Dog). It’s too weak of a lineup with castillo, schneider, pitcher.
            Just my opinion.

FYI, I was going to put Kaz on the list, but remembered he was traded for Eli Marero. Anyone traded for Marero, shouldn’t be on any list.

          6. wannybackstra

the catchers have been the strength of the offense!

            (very sad to say)

          7. There's Always '09

            Wanny,
I think that’s by default. Schneider has been driving the ball for two weeks though. Good to see.

          8. GravediggerHebner

Castillo toughest to K in the NL, has an OBP of .371 and on pace to steal 21 bags.

            Punto’s BA is .214 & OBP is .306,

            I’ll give you Counsell,

            Rayburn doesn’t really play 2B,

Infante is doing great right now but is a career back up with a career BA of .264 OBP of .308

            Fontenot’s BA is .220 & OBP is .303

Prado maybe but he’s never played a full season so is still unknown

Harris is a career back up with career BA of .247 & OBP of .327

            Bonifacio’s BA is .250 & OBP is .298,

            I’ll give you Cabrera,

Schumaker is still unknown as a 2B, if he makes it I’ll give you him too,

Of the rest of the guys, you can’t “have” Iwamura or Weeks they’re out for the year,

            Kendrick is in the minors,

Stewart has pop but nothing, repeat nothing else (.214/.294)

So Castillo is more like the 18th most desirable 2B, not the 30th. You’re exaggerating.

      2. wannybackstra

I wish my typos were as productive in my briefs and motions.

        1. CaseStreet

          no one reads them anyway.

          1. wannybackstra

I only believe that when I lose!

  3. saltygary

    So much for the no-hitter…

  4. CaseStreet

Gallardo’s been very good for me. Hope we can get to the pen.

Rubin has a piece today in the Daily News with an interview with John Franco, where Franco says Jerry had the guys drilling fundamentals like crazy in the spring….maybe the players really are apathetic dumbbells…check it out, in the light of this morning’s debate…

      http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/mets/2009/07/franco-mets-lack-leadership.html

      1. CaseStreet

        intersting read.

personally, I don’t buy the leadership thing.

I’d rather think that the team is pressing. the term waiting to exhale comes to mind.

        1. Kingman 26

Well, I have strong opinions, but am always willing to re-evaluate if I am wrong.

If Jerry really drilled the hell out of them and they still don’t get it, I guess I have to be a bit less angry at Jerry.

And as far as Wright is concerned, you can almost feel him pressing just watching the game on TV—he is SO pressing….

        2. CaseStreet

well, we knew Jerry had em taking bases on balls in the dirt, so I assumed he was emphasizing all of the fundies

      2. CaseStreet

btw, has mj’s death affected ur business at all?

        1. Kingman 26

Just a little—we have had a couple of people ask for arrangements of the tunes Quincy Jones did with him….we have sold a few extra copies of big band arrangements of Thriller.

But we mostly focus on jazz, and only do a little soul/R&B/pop/rock/etc.

          1. wannybackstra

What business are you in, if you don’t mind me asking? I’m a bit of a jazz fan (mostly fusion but also anything from the bass virtuosos, i.e. Clarke, Pattitucci, Pastorius, Wooten, etc.).

          2. GravediggerHebner

            I’m more of a John Coltrane/McCoy Tyner/Kenny Burrell guy.

          3. Kingman 26

            This is my business:

            http://www.ejazzlines.com.

My bro and I run it together….I love rock, jazz, rap, and a bit of soul/reggae/R&B and bits of country and classical too.

As for jazz, I like stuff from all eras, but LOVE the post bop/hard bop era the best. Love Coltrane and Tyner, Morgan, Mobley, Clark, Brooks, Blakey, and all of them…Herbie/Wayne/Freddie H/ Dexter, etc…..and Sinatra and Oscar Peterson.

          4. CaseStreet

oh, I thought u did all kinds of music.

          5. Kingman 26

Personally I definitely do, but our biz focuses on jazz.

  5. There's Always '09

David just needs a foul bunt strikeout and a strikeout passed ball and thrown out at 1b for the cycle!

  6. stickguy

maybe Wright did need the day off?

  7. There's Always '09

this is the kind of game we lose 1-0 on a craig counsell hr in the 7th.

    1. Kingman 26

Well, I certainly agree that this might be a damn good prediction!

      1. GravediggerHebner

I’ll go with a Gallardo homerun for the block Alex.

        1. There's Always '09

Wow…my next guess would have been jody gerut.

Regardless, in this type of game, when Ryan Braun and The Artist Currently Known as Prince Fielder step up to the plate, I will breathe a sigh of relief!

  8. CaseStreet

Pelf 52 Pitches, 37 Strikes, Bot 5th. Nice!

  9. There's Always '09

I’ve been begging Castillo to shut me up for weeks now. Thank you!!!

    1. Kingman 26

      LOL!!!!

  10. asod75

    Well hello gentlemen,
Good to see some familiar names. I was locked out from a blog which shall remain nameless and I finally gave up trying to post and started my own blog. It doesn’t just deal with the Mets, although they’re pretty much one of the main topics as it’s called Mets, Music and Other Musings. Feel free to check it out at http://asod75.wordpress.com. I’ll be sure to add the Real Dirty blog to my blog roll and post comments in here now. Let’s Go Mets! Get ‘em Pelf!

    1. GravediggerHebner

Welcome. Similar story as to the beginning of this blog. Good luck with yours. Let it be known that you caused Pelfrey to balk (just kidding in that last part).

      1. asod75

I know, as soon as I went back to GameDay, I thought, those guys are going to hate me over there. At least Fat Prince got caught on the basepaths….

        1. CaseStreet

I guess if Shef can steal 3rd, everyone else thinks they can too.

    2. mrose

Asod – threw your blog in the TRDMB blogroll as well, do you want to exchange blog roll adds for NLEC as well (http://www.nleastchatter.com)

  11. asod75

With this offense, one might just have to do. Let’s Go Mets!!! Anyone else tired of the Omar Minaya administration? Just thought I’d ask because this is the first year where I’ve really been ticked off with the way this team has been run….Discuss amongst yourselves…

  12. mrose

i love it, the new Phillies blog just literally broke the news about who the phils called up for the rotation Friday… awesome man

    1. asod75

Good stuff. You guys run a really good blog. Glad I found it today. To hell with that other one, which has really gone down the drain over the past few years. Good to chat with some familiar names, missed the discussion to be honest.

      1. metsfan4decades

And if you’re into it, many of us head over to the Real Dirty Dugout (see the tag at the top) for game chats during all Met games.

    2. CaseStreet

    1. prismo

Santana could learn a thing or two from Pelfrey.

      1. dentulous

Yeah, hopefully he can turn it around before the all star break. We need him

  24. metsfan4decades

Wow. Very nice performance from Big Pelf. He really stepped up to the plate today.
