Update (10:26 a.m.):
per the NY Post, Angel Pagan played a rehab game and Fernando Martinez is good to go for Wednesday.
Pagan, who is on the disabled list with a strained right groin, went 1-for-3 with a single, a strikeout and a run scored for St. Lucie in A-ball against Jupiter. He was pulled from the game after scoring a run in the fifth inning.
Also, The Post has learned that Fernando Martinez (right knee) was examined yesterday, received treatment and will be available to play tomorrow.
Original:
In case you missed it, Adam Rubin of the NY Daily News, reported yesterday that Angel Pagan is on his way back from the DL.
Injury-plagued Angel Pagan appears to be nearing a return to the Mets. Pagan, who is on the DL with a right groin strain, is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment on Monday night with high-A St. Lucie. That’s just in time, with Fernando Martinez’s right knee ailing and the Mets consistently asking Ryan Church to play center field.Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/mets/2009/07/pagan-closing-in-on-return.html#ixzz0Ka9naQLf&CLike Rubin said, just in time. Many of the wiseguys on here have been saying Fernando Martinez needs to return to AAA. So barring any major setbacks, it looks like they’ll get their wish pretty soon.

Well, it is a start.
SHould be interesting to see who goes. I have to guess F Mart?
ALthough I expect he hits the DL (or frankly, should regardless) after his visit with the crack medical staff today.

I think it was Jon Heyman or maybe Danny Knobler on the FAN yesterday that reported that in JJ Putz’s case the doctors had recommended surgery from the very beginning but the team asked him to try to pitch through and have cortisone shots.
I suspect this is not the first and only time the team pressured a player into not following doctors’ advice.

sure it happens quite often. Especially with a guy on a 1 year deal. No benefit to the team in having him out for the year, only the player.

Pagan’s return will make no difference whatsoever.

It’ll allow Church to move back to RF and most likely F-Mart will get sent back down.
At least when he’s playing, Pagan has been a very good OFer. No power, but gets on base and plays good D.

pagan and castillo were a good 1/2 punch at the top of the lineup. Was Fmart sent down already?

Does it make the team a playoff contender? No, but at least it is a step in the right direction. It really is crazy when you consider that not only are the starters hurt, but in some cases, the reserves for the reserves.

I like Pagan. He’s a versatile player that can play good Defense and can bat in leadoff, #6 or 7 spot. He doesn’t have power to hit HRs but he can certainly hit the gaps. With his speed, he can create some runs for us.

So, F Mart was cleared to play? Does that mean it still hurts, and a week from now he will be out for the year?

It’s not as if Duke Snider or Willie Mays were coming back. But even if they were, the Mets would wait until they were washed up!

the Mets already did that with Willie.
