The amazing Matt Cerrone of Matt Cerrone’s MetsBlog.com, reported from the Citi Field media room where earlier today Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel spoke to reporters.
In the end, Minaya said Delgado is still looking at returning around August 15, or “in that range,†and he hopes to see the other guys, including Maine, back before that.
Also, Minaya:
described the climate for trades as one that will require him to “give up a lot,†because so many teams are still in contention. He said he needs to keep an eye on 2010, 2011, and 2012, not just 2009, when trying to fill holes on his roster, noting there is no “magic bullet fix†available.
Matt also has news on Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, Billy Wagner and Infield Practice.
Good news on Delgado and the rest of the guys coming back in August. Not so good if you are a sell the farm proponent. Either way, the trade deadline will be here before we know it. Alot is riding on how the Mets do the rest of this month. If the Mets do well, Omar Minaya may not see a need to make a trade, instead being happy with the team’s standings and expecting help in August from the returning players. However, if the Mets continue to tailspin, Minaya may not be willing to sacrifice the farm for a lost season, and will not make any trades. So for Omar to be forced to “pull the trigger” on a blockbuster deal, the Mets have to play somewhere in between horrible and good.

i think it is amazing that he can apparently make a living by offering crappy commentary, content with poor grammar and factual mistakes, day old news and by crapping on his site’s visitors.

Yeah, since his site is now making him money, the least he could do is hire some writers that have mastered the language and know who’s a RHP and who’s a LHP. That was always one of my pet peeves on that site, he never knew or just didn’t care to get things right.

Or spend $150 on MS Word. It’s amazing what a simple spellcheck and grammarcheck would do for him.

Indeed. Wouldn’t tell him what arm a pitcher threw with. You need baseball knowledge for that.

I really love the optimisim of most
of you fellas. Really!
Okay,so we try to hang in until August
when our guys start to trickle back.
21 games ’til August, best case we go
what? 9-12/10-11 and find ourselves
8,9,10 back of the Phils?
Maybe more of the Wildcard.
Then what? Suddenly we turn into the
’78 Yankees? Based on what?
Overwhelming talent? All the heart
this teams shown the last couple
yrs? And/or the lack of heart shown
by the Phils? Man Imiss being that
Optimistic about the New York Mets.

Oh come on Fong, you know we’re all counting on that Jeremy Reed 30-game hitting streak. It’s coming, really it is!

I was an optimist through most of this, but it is clear that we will not win this year. I think it is heretical to break up the core (Reyes, Wright, and Beltran). But can we realistically win with this unit? It hasn’t worked in three years now and there’s no signs of it turning around any time soon. What do we need to get this done?
2010:
C – Santos? Molina?
1B – LaRoche?
2B – Castillo
3B – Wright
SS – Reyes
LF – ?
CF – Beltran
RF – Church?
SP – Santana
SP – Pelfrey
SP – ?
SP – Maine?
SP – Perez?
RP – K-Rod
RP – ?
RP – Parnell
RP – Green
RP – Feliciano
Bench – ?

Sorry guys, but I’m starting to lose hope in this era, not just this year.

Unfortunately with the free agent market what it is next season, we may have to rely on the :gulp: creativity of our GM this offseason.

I hear ya. I don’t have faith in our GM to begin with, but for the sake of argument let’s say he’s amazing. What can he work with in terms of trades? There’s not a ton there. I personally think we’re just about done with this main group of Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Santana, Pelfrey, and K-Rod. Maybe Reyes, Wright, and Pelfrey will be there for our next wave.

I lean against trading away any of the above players but my opinion might change after the season.
Of that group, it would make the most sense to deal Beltran, simply because of his age, his knees and the likelihood that he will eventually not be a fleet centerfielder. Tough call because he’s proving this season that his skills are as good as ever.
I wonder what the return would be for him given his salary and his injuries this year.

We complain about Jerry’s lineups all the time, but batting Matt Kemp 8th is a real head scratcher.
At one point this season, Blake and Kemp led the Dodgers in HRs but batted 7th and 8th.
Surely Russell Martin, Ethier, Blake or Loney could be batting behind Kemp in this lineup.

From David Lennon’s blog:
Injury news. Jose Reyes still feels pain in his right leg and had a cortisone shot in his torn right hamstring today and there is no timetable for his return. Carlos Beltran will need a rehabilitation assignment before he returns. Carlos Delgado is hitting off a tee, but isn’t expected back until mid-August.
Why the hell has Reyes been working out all this time with a still torn hamstring? Another cortisone shot to treat the symptoms but not the problem. I won’t be surprised if we don’t see Reyes again this season.

Reyes seems to be the one with no timetable at all, so I’m inclined to agree with your lack of surprise.

Something is really wrong if a torn hamstring means Reyes won’t make it back this season. 4 months for a torn hamstring? What is up with that?
Obviously, I’m beyond understanding the diagnosis of all the Mets injuries relative to when they actually make it back. Must be because I don’t have that medical degree….
