Dodgers (in blue) versus Mets (in trouble)
The Los Angeles Haves defeated the New York Havenots Tuesday. Los Angeles has a hyped young starting pitcher living up to expectations, Clayton Kershaw, who gave them 6 shutout innings, recording 7 strikeouts and allowing only 3 hits. New York doesn’t have that, they have Mike Pelfrey, who in 3 innings allowed 5 runs, 4 earned, on 8 hits.
Los Angeles has a veteran pair of speedy, slick fielding middle infielders in Orlando Hudson and Rafael Furcal, who provide plus defense and also serve as tablesetters for their lineup. New York doesn’t have that, they have Luis Castillo and Alex Cora, who when they aren’t misplaying the ball are also not getting on base.

*Disclaimer: these facts may not actually be fun
I could continue but I’m not excited about doing it. Instead, here are some fun facts:
- The Mets have been shut out twice in a row for the 1st time in 4 years.
- They have been shut out 5 times in their last 22 games.
- In 31 of their last 36 innings, the Mets have not sent more than 4 batters to the plate.
- The last time a non-pitcher drove in a run for the Mets was Friday, July 3 in the 7th inning when Brian Schneider hit an RBI double.
- That double by Schneider was the most recent extra-base hit for any Met.

Sharing is caring?
As of this writing, the Mets are tied with the Atlanta Braves for 4th place in the NL East. The Braves are currently winning 2-1 after 8 innings. Should the Braves hold off the Chicago Cubs, the Mets will be in 4th place by themselves. If the Cubs come back and win, the Mets will just have to settle for 3rd place.
After so much negativity, I feel the need to pass on something positive about the Metsies, something they’re good at, something they lead the league in…

...the Mets have ground into more double plays than any other team!
The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Mets 8-0. Please visit cbssports.com for the box score.

Grave, you remember your earlier comments about Kershaw and the Mets not hitting? Well, you are an intelligent man.
To anyone who watched the whole game… May god bless you. That is all…

Well I knew a lot about the Mets, but I didn’t know much about Kershaw until I read an excellent in depth profile on him at this cool new Mets related blog that really couldn’t have picked a worse season to debut.

Well consider this. It’s going to be one hell of an off-season.

I fear if the season continues like this for 3 more months, the internet will run out of pictures for me to use to demonstrate the suckitude.

GUys, I hate to add to your pian, but I think the onset of the Mets fall off the cliff coincided exactly with the birth of this blog.
COnincidence? Or curse of the Mattbino?

lol Actually the problem is that you share your allegiance between this blog and Mets blog (aka the anti-Christ). Make the complete transition to the light and the Mets fortunes will change.

I blame myself. I started my blog on June 12, the night Castillo dropped the popup against the Yanks. Although I did find a funny pic to put on my blog tonight. Check it out, ladies and gentlemen…

Yeah, it’s so frustrating right now. But we’ll all see it through, hopefully for the day when this team won’t rip out our hearts and then stomp on it repeatedly. I’m not about emptying the farm, but I would like to see some kind of move made by Omar to at least try and help this team out. He can say there’s no quick fix that can help the team. That may be so, but could he at least take a look at guys that could conceiveably help at a low cost? There are free agents like Ray Durham, Mark Grudzielanek, Luis Gonzalez, Jim Edmonds out there. Maybe you sign one of those guys and you catch lightning in a bottle.I know it would take those guys a few weeks to get ready and they may not even help much, but at least you’re sending a message to the team that you’re trying to help them out until the ‘cavalry’ returns. Because by the time all those guys return, this team will be at least 10 games out if they keep playing lifeless ball…..

I hope you’re joking. I understand this sucks, and I gave up on the season in early June, but you can’t stop watching this team. Give up your expectations and just watch for the love of our loser team. Think of it like the early 90s or something. You know it’s gonna be brutal, but you watch because you love the team regardless. I’ve given up, but I’ll still watch as many games as I realistically can. The one thing that I won’t do is I will not make anymore trips to NYC specifically to go to Citi Field. They don’t deserve my money with the way they play, and it’s not exactly cheap/quick for me to get there. So enjoy the games for what they are, and take up drinking during the games to dampen the pain.

Since you have to like pain to be a Met fan, I guess I qualify b/c I watch every game, every pitch, to the bitter end. But oh, the pain, the pain.
So there is only one way to go, up? It can’t get any worse, right?
If we pull this off this year, this will go well beyond a miracle.

and yet, the Phillies botch another golden opportunity!
If the Mets are toast, I will have to hope the Marlins or (gasp!) the Braves at least beat out Philly for the division. I don’t think (being as I live in Philly country) I could take another year of them doing well in the playoffs.

Agreed, but as hard as it is to believe, I’d actually root for Atlanta in that scenario. I loathe the Marlins almost as much as the Phillies, especially living here in Florida. They’re always so bitter because the Mets have many more fans at their games than they do. Not to mention what happened on the final weekends of the last two seasons (sorry to bring that up)…..

Right there with you. I went through this in the early-mid 90s and then after 2000. You’ve been through a lot more of the ineptitude in our history, so I greatly respect your fandom. Remember, though, it can always get worse. I won’t talk about how it could get worse just so I don’t wind up jinxing anyone.

This team needs a major roster overhaul in the off season. And yes, I know you can only change so many guys in 1 year.
I just really don’t think Omar has the stones, or the smarts, to pull it off.
At minimum, Jerry has to go. But I really do think now that the Wilpons should find a new baseball “genius” to take over the organization and fix the mess.
Hard to imagine them eating a 3 year extension, but how about getting him a boss?
ANyone know what the Mets org structure is? If they keep Omar, can they didtch whatever VP of Ops, etc., sit above him, and get a smarter person to come in and shake up the whole organization? Omar would then just be a toady (if he isnt already) to a “superior” talent.
Mna, the hot stove chatter is going to be fun this year. Good thing TRS has tenure.

Why the Wimpons ever signed Omar to an extension, I’ll never know. Why do they love this guy so much?

As much as this seems like Omars fault and all, who knows how much control he has. He might be handcuffed by the Wimpons or Bernazard might have the power, I mean who the hell knows with this Front Office mess. We need a new FO and a whole new management staff IMO. Sad part is that the Wimpons dont seem like they are going anywhere for a long time…….

It is exhausting to keep seeing how Minaya is the reason we are 4 games below .500 at this time.
Fault lies with everyone from ownership on down.
Minaya is but a small piece of the puzzle.
To put Beltran,Reyes,Maine,Ollie,Delgado, and Putz’s injuries solely on Minaya is unfair IMO.
Does anyone think firing Minaya or Manuel will fix our offensive woes this season? I don’t.
Does anyone think Wright will finish season with a .260 avg or less? I don’t
Does anyone think Santana will not win 10 games this year? I don’t
Does anyone think our season is over come the A.S.B.? I don’t
Manuel will be fired if Team has quit on him. I do not believe we are there yet but when and if it happens do not be lulled into this illusion that now we will make a run.
Fault lies with all from: Fred Wilpon, to Omar Minaya to Jerry Manuel to Dan Warthen to Johan Santana to David Wright and on and on and on.
Let’s keep our eye on the big picture.

The fault is solely on the players.

“The fault is solely on the players.”
yes for what is going on in the field but responsibility is more than that.
The season taking the shape that it has stems from decisions going way back into off season that players have no control over.
Free Agent signings, Trades that were made or not made, draft selections, Decisions on medical evaluations, etc etc etc.
What we are seeing right now is not simply players unable to perform that would be too easy and maybe for a few it’s better that way but the reality is this goes way deeper than that.
