Draft And Follow: 7-10-09

Gulf Coast League

• The GCL Mets moved into 1st place in the GCL East division with a win over the GCL Marlins Thursday.  3B Josh Dunn (25th round, pick #764) made his professional debut batting 6th, he finished 0 for 4 with 1 strikeout.  4 of his fellow 2009 draft classmates played and all fared better.  TRDMB favorite C Nelfi Zapata batted 3rd, had a 1st inning RBI single and came around to score.  He also had a 4th inning RBI single, and finished the game 2 for 4.  He is now batting .395 and has 11 RBI in 12 games this season.  Now that 2009 draftee C Camden Maron has signed and been assigned to the GCL Mets bringing the total number of catchers on the roster to 5, maybe Zapata has a promotion in his future.  RF Cody Holliday had a 4th inning double and later scored, and wound up 1 for 4.  1B Travis Ozga walked in the 4th and was driven in by Zapata, he had singled in the 2nd but was caught stealing and finished 1 for 3 for the game.  Batting 9th, CF ZeErika Hall walked and scored in the 2nd, walked and scored again in the 4th, and doubled in the 8th to finish 1 for 2.  After an 0 for 7 start in his 1st pro season, Hall is 6 for his last 9 with an overall batting average of .375.  For more see the box score and recap.
  

Appalachian League

• The Elizabethton Twins beat the Kingsport Mets 6-5 Thursday in 10 innings.  Class of ’09 draftee Thomas Chism kept the game tied by pitching a scoreless 9th inning, allowing a harmless 2-out single while striking out the side.  3B Joseph Bonfe had 1 hit in 5 at bats, a 5th inning 3-run homer, his 2nd of the year.  Bonfe also committed his 6th error of the season.  CF Ronald Harris went 2 for 5.  DH Ryan Mollica doubled and stole 3B (his 4th) in the 6th inning but was stranded and finished the game 1 for 4.  John Semel finished 1 for 4 with a 2nd inning RBI single.  C John Freeman went 0 for 4, and OF Kurt Steinhauer came on to play LF in the 7th inning and finished 0 for 1.  For more see the box score and recap.

New York-Penn League

• Wednesday it took the Aberdeen IronBirds 10 innings to end the Brooklyn Cyclones 10 game winning streak.  Thursday it took them 16 innings to give the Cyclones their 1st 2 game losing streak of 2009.  With 2 outs in the top of the 16th, Aberdeen converted a walk, wild pitch and a single into victory.  3 2009 drafted pitchers combined to throw 14 scoreless innings for Brooklyn.  Darin Gorski made his first pro start (after 2 relief appearances) and threw 6 innings of 1-hit ball, striking out 7 IronBirds.  Lance Hoge followed Gorski with 4 scoreless innings, allowing 4 hits and striking out 2.  Brandon Sage relieved Gorski and tossed 4 scoreless frames of his own, giving up just 1 hit and striking out 1.  RF Nick Santomauro went 0 for 6 with 4 strikeouts, LF Alex Gregory had 1 single in 6 at bats, and 1B Sam Honeck had 2 singles in 5 times up and is now batting .324 on the season.  See the game story, box score and recap for more.  The Brooklyn Paper has a nice article on the Cyclones pitching staff.
