Appalachian League

New York-Penn League

Periodically if irregularly we will be taking a look at a some of the Mets top prospects. Since both the GCL Mets and the Savannah Sand Gnats had Sunday off, this seems like a good time to start.
- Sunday the Futures Game was held in St. Louis, site of the 2009 Major League All-Star game. 2 Met prospects were selected for the World Team, SS Wilmer Flores and P Jenrry Mejia. Mejia did not participate. Flores started at 2B and was 0 for 2. For more info on the game check out the game story.
- Flores, who won’t turn 18 until August 6th, is in his 2nd year of professional ball. Baseball America considers him the Mets #2 prospect behind Fernando Martinez. In 2008 Flores played for 3 different Met minor league teams, getting the majority of his playing time for the rookie Appalachian League Kingsport Mets. Overall at his 3 stops Flores hit .307, had an OBP of .347 and a SLG of .468 as a 16 year old with 13 doubles, 4 triples, 8 home runs and 42 RBI in 280 at bats. This season with the Savannah Sand Gnats in the A ball South Atlantic League Flores is producing a .280/.319/.353 line in 289 at bats, with 13 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs and 23 RBI while competing with and playing against players whose average age is 21.

Wilmer Flores
- Mejia is the Mets #7 prospect per Baseball America. He will turn 20 October 11th. The average age of his Binghamton teammates is 24. 2009 is his 3rd season in professional baseball. He started this year with St. Lucie of the Advanced A Florida State League and in 9 starts he went 4-1 with a 1.97 ERA and a 1.132 WHIP, allowing 41 hits and 16 walks in 50 1/3 innings pitched. He struck out 44. Mejia was promoted to AA Binghamton where so far he is 0-3 in 4 starts with a 3.74 ERA and a 1.477 WHIP. He has allowed 23 hits and 9 walks 21 2/3 innings with 24 strikeouts. Mejia did not participate in the Futures Game as he is currently on the 7 day disabled list with a strained finger. Tim Teufel has nice things to say about Mejia.

Jenrry Mejia

The GCL Mets had yesterday off so nothing new to report on Nelfi.
I am new to this much attention to the minor leagues so I don’t know if it’s normal or not but it seems odd to me that the GCL Mets have 5 catchers on the roster.
Of those 5 Zapata is getting the most PT and taking advantage of it:
13 games, 41 AB, 15 H, 3 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 11 RBI, .366/.449/.610

Thanks Grave.
It’s got to be interesting to hear the discussions taking place in the Mets Front Office these days. They’re probably having the same discussions we’re having on here about their prospects and who they are willing to trade. I wonder what goes into these decisions.

Right after the break our first 17 games are against second tier teams. If we don’t come out of the gates rolling, it’s over.

Yup.
DISCLAIMER: I hate trying to prouect out the schedule, but dang it, I am doing it anyway!
Tack on SD and Ariz on the road (2 other teams that aren’t exactly setting the world on fire).
that is 27 games, ending 8/12. And that is theoretically when they wil lbe getting whatever help back they are getting from the DL.
And even before all the injuries and the team falling apart, the just concluded stretch was considered to be the brutal part of the schedule.
So let’s see, 3 games under now. Pray for a miracle, and a 17-10 streak.
That puts them at 59-55, with 48 games left with a full team in place.
Honestly, 4 games over on 8/12 is not very good, and even if Philly only keeps kinda pace and goes 15-12, they are still 4.5 back (and more if Fla gets hot, or even Atlanta). Or of course, Philly wins more than that.
I’m guessing then that they would have to go on a Rockiean tear to close the gap (of course, the Phils could help by folding like a cheap tent).
so, 48 games? 30-18 puts them at (hang on, need to take my socks off, I ran out fo fingers…OK, got it). 89-73 record (gee, that looks familiar!)
Will that get it done? Even better question, can they pull it off?
Of course, the 17-10 over the next 27 might be the killer, but that does feed into the whole idea of keeping withing striking distance until help arrives (frm the DL, or of course, the schedule).

The schedule indeed seems favorable, but I think if the Mets get back in it, it will be for the wild card. To me, the Giants are much more vulnerable than the Phillies and I believe the Mets get the Giants for a big 4-game set at CitiField sometime in August (hopefully everybody is back by then). The Mets took 3 of 4 from the Giants on the road and might have swept had it not been Pelfrey’s balkfest in the Sunday night game. If the Mets can get within four games of the Giants and then take 3 of 4 again, they’re back in business as well. Anyway folks, I posted my first half awards and other highlights/lowlights on my blog. Check it out and weigh in with your thoughts and criticisms. http://asod75.blogspot.com/

The Phils are gone folks!
They’ve in all likelyhood
theyre worst baseball.
Theyre gonna add another
arm AFTER Pedro AND were
better than us to start out with. The only hope is the Wildcard. Much more realistic
to think 14-13 over the next 27 when (hopfully) guys start
to return.That would put us
at 56-58,maybe 7/8 back of the
Wildcard with 7/8 teams to jump over. What would lead anyone to think that at THAT
point we could go atleast
32-16 to get to 88Wins which
still might not be enough?

Well I think we all agree that the Phils adding Pedro is to the advantage of everyone but the Phils. It’s that “other arm” you speak of that concerns me.
