Quiet here this morning. I’ll kick things off:
The Home Run Derby seems to have run its course. Soooo boring.

I think part of the problem is the players involved. I mean…look at the initial 8 in the derby.
Nelson Cruz, Prince Fielder, Ryan Howard, Joe Mauer, Carlos Pena, Albert Pujols, Adrian Gonzalez, and Brandon Inge
In my opinion, only THREE of them should have been in it: Fielder, Howard, and Pujols. I realize some of the other guys have some power, but they’re not the type of players who have historically embodied the larger-than-life HR Derby contestants.
A great 2009 Derby would include:
Prince Fielder
Ryan Howard
Albert Pujols
Alex Rodriguez (I believe he declined to be in the Derby, probably because he’s a moron)
Manny Ramirez (steroids be damned, Manny would make the Derby much more interesting)
David Ortiz (I know he’s not having a great year, but it’s the name more than the stats)
Should’ve been just those six guys. Not 44 career HRs Nelson Cruz.

Yeah, I see your point. I think another way to go would be to have a more head to head set up, sort of like a bracket. This way, each and every turn is exciting. And only 10 or 15 pitches each round. We don’t need to see some dude rip off 20 homers in a row and then lose the next round because he’s tired. How many homers can you hit in 15 pitches and then move on.
I think MLB misunderstands the lure of the homer. It’s that you see it, it’s that you hope to see it. When it happens, you’re excited because of the anticipation. The derby is just a counting game at this point.
That’s my two cents.

I was fine w/ everyone except Brandon Inge. You can’t have the same guys every year. All those guys have 20+ homeruns this season. Plus, if you saw Nelson Cruz’s first round, there’s no doubt he’s a HR hitter.

The problem with it for me is twofold:
1. It’s way too long. 8 guys each hitting until their 10 ‘outs’, then a round with 4, then a round with 2. Wow, that gets old really fast.
2. This is just glorified batting practice. I love watching the game of baseball, not just one aspect of it.
Honestly, I’ve never been a big fan of the All-Star Game or any of the festivities during the break. I understand why it’s not played like a real game (with starting players in for the full game) but that’s one of the things that I don’t like about it.

I didn’t watch it. But did they give away a house?

By the way, can’t believe the NY Post does a full back page on the Yanks getting Halladay. If Toronto trades him to the Yanks, unless they are getting Cano, Hughes, and three top prospects, Ricciardi should be fired.
That being said, I’d much rather he go to the Yanks than the Phils.
Queue the “Phils are not getting Halladay” talk.

I’m glad I don’t read or notice the Post.

The Post usually does a good job with sports. Bart Hubbach kills the Mets no matter what and George King III, waxes poetic about the Yanks no matter what.

don’t bet they aren’t getting him (the Phils, that is).
I expect them to go really hard after Harry Leroy, and probably put as good an offer up as Toronto will ever see, so it will be up to them to crap or get off the pot.

If they REALLY want to make All-Star Monday interesting, they should scrap the HR contest completely and have an MLB Slam Dunk contest! Or maybe a Punt, Pass & Kick.
But seriously, I didn’t watch a minute of it and don’t care who won, I would MUCH rather they have the Futures Game on Monday because then I can see it, and not be forced to miss it because my favorite team is playing it’s last game for 4 days at the same moment.

…or televise the futures game on monday night.

I thought that’s what I was implying, unless you mean on tape delay. I find tape delay for sporting events troubling, it’s hard to avoid the result before you get to watch the event, or if you watch the event and the the network it’s on allows the result to go by on a scroll while you’re watching it, that’s the worst.
So yes, have the game on Monday night, and televise it live. Sadly I think far fewer people would watch it than watch the HR contest. But they would get one new viewer for Monday night: me.
